Do you dumb down your Disney terminology?

When you're talking to people IRL who aren't as into Disney as you are, do you use proper Disney terminology, or do you dumb it down?

For example, do you call them cast members or employees? Do you call them ADRs or just reservations?

I swear, people think I'm insane for being so much into Disney, so I dumb it down a lot, rather than deal with the looks or comments.

OH that's so funny! Yes it can be embarassing to be such an expert. Let's see, I've been known to say...

"we were at Epcot til midnight - you know how they let you stay later if you stay in one of their hotels."

Oh and this one I'm not proud of....

"We spent the first day in the Magic Kingdom, you know, the main park"

Yep. I'm forever explaining stuff to my family. My mom & dad were visiting us this weekend and looking through our photos from the past couple of years' trips. I didn't realize how much Disney jargon we use in our immediate family until going through those albums with them.

However, my mom' idea of a Disney vacation is a SINGLE day (gasp) visit to either Magic Kingdom or Epcot (she takes my nephew every few years). I don't think my dad's been to Disney since the early '90s

Oh yes! Our marching band went to WDW in Dec. and I had to dumb down my talk. So many people don't understand that there are FOUR parks and have no idea how spread out the parks are. One family made dinner reservations at Emeril's (at Universal/City Walk) and thought they could just go outside their WDW hotel (Coronado) and catch a bus to get there!

Thankfully, there was one band parent who has an older daughter who works at Epcot, so at least I had somebody to talk to who's as "Disney-fied" as I am!

I try not to use jargon that would just confuse people who didn't know what I was talking about. This is a good rule that applies to just about any topic. Thanks goodness we DISers are all up to speed on most of the shorthand lingo and abbreviations.

I do, I may be a Disney Geek, but who needs to know that?

I hate how everytime I tell my sister about a windfall of money (most recently hail damage on the car) she says "Oh, god, are you going to Disney again?".

I usually find myself avoiding the jargon. I helped friends plan a trip last year, I wrote up an email then went through it carefully replacing acronyms and certain terms with something simpler. Something I didn't have to change were the references to the free dining plan, that they understood !

Im *proud* to know each and every nook & cranny of WDW. And like seeing the shocked looked of expressions when I can answer something *snap fingers* like THAT!

Aren't band trips great? LOL.

It depends on what I'm saying and who I'm talking to.

Instead of ADRs, I say reservations. Or I'll still call them Priority Seating if I'm talking to my parents.

I usually call them Cast Members unless I get this confused look, then I'll add "thats what Disney calls their employees".

I always use Backstage.

At this point, my friends are so used to my Disney jargon, they will just nod and smile if they have no clue what I'm saying. Usually, though, if they don't know what I'm talking about, they will catch on eventually and understand. They are alot better now, though, since we went to Disney on our band trip in February.

Nope, I use the jargon, and I'm darn proud of it!

I confuse everyone else, but I usually end up explaining it later. At least I'm smart in something, even if it is just Disney terms

Some terms I explain and others I dumb down. Last week disboard vocab slipped into a work when I emailed my assistant that I would be late because I was taking DH to the doctor. Her response, "DH? You're taking David Hasselhoff to the doctor?"

Oh Honu I am so with you on that! I have even caught myself almost calling DH "DH" in a conversation instead of his name!
I also have a tendency to tell people we are staying at the "Poly".

Listening to this guy just about killed me!!!

I have never been to WDW, but find I know waaaay to much about it, just from planning our trip there this year.
I have been to DL 2x in the past 18 monthes, so I think I am an expert there!!

Another problem I find is that when I am writing an email, I want to use all the Dis smilies!!

But, ya, to answer your question, I do get all sorts of weird looks and have to clarify what I am referring to when talking "Dis".
