I don't know if I speak for all musicians, but I hate those songs and most songs like them. They may be fun for some people, but's it torture to have to play them. It's not that they're difficult to play. They're not. They are just very annoying to play. Kind of like disco... I guess that's why we have DJs who can start those songs, hand out silly hats, and walk away for a few minutes.
As for dancing to them... I don't! I'm basically a slow dance guy, if I dance at all.

LOL, well our DJ didn't walk away. he was the best DJ EVER. he handed out hats and then put one on himself and led the group. He was sooooooooooo worth the money!
At the kids schools roller skating parties, when they do the cha-cha slide, you don't have to have on skates to go out and do it, so DD and her friends always come get me to do it with them.
My Grandmother totally screwed up our play list at our wedding. She of course requested Chicken Dance. And the Electric Slide - there was no Cha-Cha then....
These are the other songs she requested:
Gloria
The Greek Syrto (sp) line dancing (we're not even Greek! )
Italian line dancing songs
I can't imagine inviting a GUEST to my wedding, accepting a gift from them (and possibly a shower gift, too) and telling my DJ that under no circumstances was he to play a song they requested.
Not putting it on a list of songs that you are specifically requesting the DJ to play is completely different - that I can understand.
We gave our wedding DJ a whole list of songs that we were not to hear. All group/line dances were included in the list of banned songs. Cha Cha wasn't out then, but I despise the Electric Slide and the chicken dance.
We also would not allow a dollar dance (don't get me started on how cheesy I think these are).
I don't understand the popularity of the song Love Shack either. I can't stand that one. Not sure why others hear in it. That and the sound track to Grease. Ick. Guess I'm a whack-a-do.
P.S. Where else except weddings do you hear these songs? Just cruises, I guess?
I teach 7th grade. My cool factor went way up when I did the Cha Cha Slide with them at a dance. I do the Macarena, the Electric Slide, the Cotton Eyed Joe, and I'll do the Chicken Dance though I despise it. Most dancing I do is with youth at school or at camp, so these songs are often played. Love Shack and YMCA are popular, too. Oh, and the Hand Jive. My arms get tired during that one!
A couple years ago, after that MTV reality show "The 70s House" or whatever it was called, my students wanted to learn The Hustle. I looked up the moves online and we figured it out together. It was a lot of fun.
