I work retail and this is a very sore subject for me. Please don't make me spend my time on a purchase and then return it after using it. It is a waste of the store employee's talents as a whole..

You know OP, Wal mart sees nothing wrong with people who buy and then return things. MY BIL works for WalMart and they actually have people out there that buy things on purpose from other stores and return it to walmart (w/o a receipt) to get more money. It's actually a money maker for those dishonest people. I recently found out that Walmart has a 45 day policy for 3 returns w/o receipts. I had no idea. So, I guess if the dishonest person waits long enough they can make more money 45 days later. SICK! :earseek:

This stuff is really just wrong. I can't believe how many people do it though :(

Any one ever read Ethel Kenndy's Bio? Even the rich and famous do this. :sad2:

I know, isn't that more repulsive! Rich people w/ money doing such a thing. How low!

I used to know a girl who did this same thing all the time. Made me sick. She would return anything and everything, with or without a receipt, no matter how old or used. She knew just where to shop, too. I haven't talked to her in years, but I'd bet she's still doing it. I don't think your friends would care if you confronted them--people like that just don't feel guilty about what they are doing. It's so wrong!

My MIL works at Lowes and she said people do this all the time. They'll return lawn equipment after the summer, lawn chairs, tables even BBQ grills, Christmas Trees, christmas lights and decorations. You name it, people have returned it used and sometimes even abused.

I don't agree with it, but I have much bigger fish to fry than worry about what others are returning to stores.

I used to work at Dick's Sporting Goods, and we accepted used shoes that were over 2 years old... because they were breaking down.

As far as prosecuting this. Give me a break, it would be way too hard to prove, and it's so almost victimless when you compare it to pretty much anything else.

I was in Payless last week b/c Julia needs black ballet slippers for her dance recital (um they could have told me before I bought the pink ones - but that is a different thread)

I couldn't bring myself to pay the $15 and the girl working in there told me - just bring back after the recital  I could not believe she told me that - she said corporate store policy is any return with a receipt - I couldn't bring myself to do it - but she said it happens all the time!!!

I had a neighbor that was "very tight" with money. She would go buy a gallon of paint at Lowes or Home Depot. Return it saying that is was not the right color...walk around the store for a while and wait for them to mark it down to a dollar or two and put it on the clearance rack. She would have her friend walk up and buy it back for her. :confused3 That is a little extreme, if you ask me.

I've never bought anything with express intentions of returning it, but I can think of one place where I probably went into a gray area.

We were getting ready to sell our old house and there was a big blank patch of wall over the sofa. So I went to one of those home stores (Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware, I can't remember which one) and found a large print that I thought might work. We hung it up, and it didn't really work--the size wasn't quite right, the colors weren't quite right. But we figured we'd leave it up and see if it would grow on us over the next few days.

Fast forward to about 6-8 weeks later--the house sold pretty fast and we were in a whirlwind of activity with the sale and the upcoming move. I had honestly forgotten about the print. We were packing and I came across the receipt for the print--I was still within the window for a return. I still wasn't thrilled with the print and certainly couldn't think of anywhere it would work in the new house, so I called the store and explained the situation and they said sure, bring it back. So I did and they refunded the money. I felt a little bad about it, but they were just fine with it at the store. For the record, though, DH was horrified.

I will also absolutely return things I've used, but only if they're defective. I returned 2 pairs of pants to the store last year. After just 2 wearings they split a side seam and dopped the cuff hems--you bet them I took them back! The lady at the counter was a little snotty about it, but there's no way I'm paying good money for shoddily-made clothes!

I think Burlington Coat Factory only give store credit, no cash refunds.

I bought a pocket book, and when I got home all my stuff didnt really fit in it, so I returned it, tags still on. And they gave be a gift card for the same amount.

THis kind of policy would cut down on returns--I still have that gift card.

I have a big guilty conscience so nope, I haven't intentionally bought something to use once and return it.

I have bought things that don't work as advertised and returned them. I always want to return clothes that shrink/fade after the first washing but I just know I'll be laughed right out of the store.

I used to work in retail and this is basically stealing. And it results in higher costs to you. (I had a woman try to return a fur she had spilled red wine all over and claim that she bought it that way!)

My husband used to work at Montgomery Wards and this guy would come in at the beginning of the summer and buy a backyard pool. THe store had a 90-day return policy so 89days later he would return the pool. He managed to do this three summers before he got on the black list. I thought and still think it was very wrong.

My brother had a girlfriend who would buy things that had "free gifts". She would return the item and keep the gifts.

Her favorite time was Christmas. She would give everyone the "free gifts" as her presents.

I definitely think it's wrong. But one time I was buying a new camera and I ended up returning the camera four times before I was done. Of course each time I spent another $50 or so and moved up in quality. I wasn't doing it on purpose at all, I was just trying to find a camera that would result in good shots even with my lousy skills. I finally found a camera that worked for me and I ended up spending $200+ more than the first one. I am sure the other cameras were sold as new, I took very good care of them and repackaged them perfectly.

I have never bought anything with the intention of using it and then returning it.

I rarely return anything as a matter of fact. Shorts too short or shoes too tight? I just donate them to Goodwill.

I can only imagine buying something and finding out someone had already USED it! EWWW!!
