Do you check oven before turning it on?

I keep a box of baking soda handy instead. Very good for putting out fires. ;)

Naaa, I just hit the button... so many times the pizza stone is still in there and it gets pre-heated along with the oven whether or not I intend to use it.

At home no because I know what is stored there.

My sister went to stay at my Aunts Condo one year. While looking for an appropriate pan she checked the oven. It still had all the packing inside from purchase. Thank goodness she looked. The oven was over 2 year old.:rotfl: My aunt is not a big cooker.

I never check because i never store things in oven-usually.

But one Christmas with lots of family and lots of food I stored a Half-sheet cake in the oven. The plastic cover melted and almost caught on fire when I turned the oven on to preheat. The smell of melting plastic let us catch it before the oven was in flames.

One time my Dh dropped a pot holder into the oven without realizing it. That was the worst thing that every happened. It didn't actually flame, but turned black and really smelled bad and made a lot of smoke!

Yes because I come from a long line of storing things in there people!

It was the first thing I taught my kids when they got old enough to start baking on their own. and I still yell it out when I hear them in the kitchen "did you take the stuff out of the oven?"

I'm good about checking the oven before turning it on. Its the burners that I have a problem with! More than a time or two I turned on what I thought was the correct burner only to find out the hard way it wasnt! Melted and burned a few items over the years.:confused3:rotfl:

I do. It's a habit I formed long time ago and I would never have seperated it from the action of turning on the oven.

I always check to make sure my oven is there before I turn it on. It's never been gone.

Once I smelled a weird burning/chemical smell when I was cooking. It turned out to be melting plastic as DD had hidden blocks in the lower drawer/broiler.

Now that the kids are older, I don't usually check underneath but I quickly open the main oven just to make sure somebody hasn't stashed a pizza box or a dirty cookie sheet in there. ;)

Yes, definitely. Once dd turned the oven on and there was a cardboard pizza box in it. Luckily we caught it in time. Now I've taught everyone in the house, when you turn on the oven, open and check and then turn on the oven light. When you turn the oven off, turn the oven light off.

I have done that. :headache:

No because we don't store anything in there. One year on Christmas though, DH turned on the Monkey Bread before checking the oven. You keep it covered with a dish towel overnight and that started to burn a bit. Now I put a post-it note over the oven dial when I make Monkey Bread to take off the towel first. :lmao:

we keep a pan in the oven and eveytime i cook i forget to take it out. Its not a big deal it just heats up. but you would i would remember by now
