Do you call" out" at work on a bad snow day?

i am debating that right now
i am on today 9 to 1 its already bad out
by the time its 1pm it will be even worse

I no longer work, but when I did, I was off most of the winter months. I was a female construction worker. Go Laborer's International!

No calling out for me - I work for a 24hr/365 day a year company - I supervise the "after ours" staff - we all work from our homes.

I'm a server for a NE chain and the GM can be quite moody when it comes to calling out even on a snow day. He lives an hour away and "he makes it in". He'll usually understaff the restaurant and have just the closers come in and a few later stations come in, luckily I'm in an early station tonight and hoping for "the call". I live less than 10 minutes away from work.

My company does not do snow days - EVER. If we take off we have to use a vacation day or make up the time within the calendar month. That's fine if the snow day is early in the month, but it makes it tough if it's at the end of the month.

That said, I don't drive if the roads are bad. I'd rather take the hit to my vacation time.

The dilemma this morning is that I'm supposed to teach Sunday School at second service. First service is cancelled, but so far not 2nd service. Our road hasn't been plowed yet. ETA! Just refreshed the church web page, and all services are cancelled.

If the schools are closed, I'll stay home with my kids. I don't want the raises the other people get, having to be able to stay home when I can is more important. I've been with my company for 23 years.

When I was workng, I workd about an hour a half north of here so snow was always worse as I got closer to work. I almost never went in on a snow day. Just wasn't safe.

I usually work from home on snow days, just to be safe. Why travel in bad weather if you don't have to. I don't know about tomorrow? I will have to see what the rest of the day will bring.

I too am a nurse, and neither hell nor high water can keep us home! It doesn't matter what is going on you are expected to be there. In the case of snow and ice, if you call in and say you can't get there; they will send out a 4x4 SUV owner to get you. There is a entire brigade of SUV owners that volunteer their services in getting the nurses to work. Gives 'em something to brag about.

Whe we have blizzard like conditions here in mass I will call out... (did it today) not worth my life to risk it for my weekend job... just work sundays at supermarket....
My other job (teacherat nursery school) I never call out... if they call a state of emergency she MAY cancel.. me and another teacher are always expected to work...

I never went in. I had an hour plus commute over a bridge. It is not worth my life for a few dollars. I have a phobia about driving in the snow. I have a small car that slides all over the place in this weather. :wave2:

I am scheduled to work 11 - 7:30 today (retail)...really hoping they call and say they are closing the store. It doesn't seem too bad right now, but from what I hear it will only be getting worse.
There was only one time I called in because of bad weather, when I was pregnant and commuting to Boston, but it turns out that they closed the office anyway and never called to let me know!

I work in a school so most bad days I have off. We already have to make up 3 days this year in June so I hope tomorrow is just a delayed opening. ::yes::

I just called out for today. I usually work Sundays as OT and they didn't have anything important for me to work on, so I'm just going to stay in my PJ's today. They haven't plowed my street yet and I can't see my car.

It won't be all fun and games though because I'm going to need a couple of hours to dig my car out tonight.

Nope. As a nurse I'm expected to show no matter what. If it looks like snow, we're expected to show up early with our overnight bag, just in case. Thankfully, now I work from home so I can do my job from my basement. But I have been "rescued" by the Security department and issued forth to the hospital to do my job.

I work at a nursing home...so there is no calling out during a snowstorm. I have heard stories of people getting picked up by the police and brought in during a storm.

Luckily, any really bad storms, have been on the weekends or when I was already at work..and didn't hit during travel time.

There's not much in Turnersville? Wow, I'm 15 mintues away from you and we have about 8 inches, and if watching the cars going by is any indication, roads are really bad.

Well, when I wrote that, there wasn't much, but now there is!

I'm sure I'll be getting a phone call, later today, telling me we don't have school.

The ice storm you referred to must have been on December 9th, right? We were coming home from WDW that night. Our schools were closed that day.

Where do you live?

I work only a few days in the office, and some of the time at home, so if it is a really bad weather day I can usually just call in and tell them I'm working my hours at home that day, provided I have enough at home with me to do. :sunny:

Yup, it was the December 9th storm. I'm in Pittsgrove. I can't tell exactly how much we really have the wind keeps blowing it all over the place. In some spots it's none and in others we have 17 inches.

I just put it in 4X4, allow a little extra time, drive slower, and no problems. I have a 50 minute commute.
