Do You Call Back Numbers on Your Caller ID or Cell?

When that happens to me I just ignore it. If they don't leave a message obviously it was an error in punching in/dialing the number. No big deal.

I've never been able to understand why people think they need to call someone back in a case like that. :confused3

I had someone call me back once when I dialed the wrong number. They acted "put out" that it had happened. Well, sooorrrrrrrryyyyyyy!!! Geez!

No. If I don't know the number I don't call back. I figure if it's important enough they'll call back, or someone had the wrong number. Sometimes It'll be my friends using someone elses phones but I never call back.

I figure if they really wanted to talk to me, they'd leave a message.
Otherwise I just figure they dialed wrong.

I HATE caller ID. I do home health care so I have to call people's homes to schedule appointments. I try to do it from the office but that isn't always possible. If I call from home or my cell, I "*67" which blocks by number. Most homes won't allow my call to go through with a blocked number. I don't want people to have my private number. I want them to call back through the agency which has ways to reach me.

Then, when we give them the 24 hours number to call where a nurse is always on call, they still call back on a number they find on their caller ID. This might be a back line number that no one picks up after hours but they would rather do that than follow directions.

Sorry for the rant. Can you tell this is a pet peeve of mine?:rotfl:

You should ask your company to give you a cell phone so you don't have to use yours. I wouldn't use my personal cell phone for company business just for the reason you stated.

Or, you could get a prepaid one and just use it for those out of office calls and set the voice mail to give out the office number if someone calls you back. Then put in for reimbursment. I was at Walmart yesterday and they have Net10 prepaid phones for $30 and 10 cents a minute (all the time).

It's not quite the same thing, but I had a clerk from a legal firm call. She thought she was calling another attorney's office. She had a strong accent and couldn't grasp the concept that SHE DIALED A WRONG NUMBER. :sad2:

She called repeatedly over a few days and yes, I got a bit 'cranky' . It eventually progressed to hang-up calls. I called back the number on my Caller ID and did my best to describe her voice to the receptionist. (It's a big firm.) She thought she knew who it was, but the calls continued.

I looked the company up, sent an email to the head guy and was copied on the email he sent to his employees telling whoever was doing this to stop calling my number.

WHY do people do this? It drives me crazy at work. I work in a really big place--people will call and say, "Someone called me from this number." Well, if they'd meant to call you, they probably would have left you a voicemail. I have NO idea who it was.

And then the ones on my cell phone--I never call anyone on my cell phone whose number isn't programmed in there--only family and friends. So, they've gotten a wrong number and then dial my number incorrectly and interrogate me. "Who is this? Why did you call me?" I didn't, you idiot.

I will just never understand taking a wrong number as some kind of personal insult.

I had a man call me a couple weeks ago - very odd man. I answered the phone and he says, "why did you call me?". I told him I don't even know who he is - who are you?! "You called me first - what do you want?". This went on for a few minutes - it just got ridiculous. He never would identify himself and I had no idea when or why I would have called him.

Who has that much time?

Maybe these are very lonely people and the only time they get to talk to someone is when a wrong number shows up on their cell.

Or... they're just idiots. :thumbsup2

I also had a woman attack me about a month ago. Called my cell and demanded to know why I called her. Refused to believe I didn't. Straight out called me a liar. I was sooooooo tempted to make something up:

"I called because your brother is in jail and he needs bail money within the hour or he'll be locked up until the trial date 8 months from now. Run, Lola, RUN!"

I never call back numbers I don't recognize.

People call our office all of the time and ask, "did someone call me?" I don't know, dude, but we have 12 people using the same phone lines and I'm not going to roam around the office to see if any of them wants you. Chances are someone dialed a wrong number. If it is important, people leave messages.

:rotfl2: I am SO using this next time, Mal!

My sisters & I rarely leave messages so I call them back. But not a # I don't know. Like the others have said if they needed say something leave a message. Now I get people all the time calling my cell & I tell them they have the wrong # & they argue with me then ask me how long have I had this #, I say 15 years. so who you tried to pick up gave you the wrong Number Dude.

I dont even call back numbers I know!

Me either! If they don't leave me a message I'm not calling back. Besides who has all that free time to be checking on stuff like that?

My other complaint is people that don't listen to the message on the answering machine. Ours is pretty clear, name and number.

Yet we got a call once that said "hi , it's me. I'm in town for the night and was wondering if you wanted to meet for drinks or coffee, call me back I'm waiting to hear from you"

So, since neither myself or my DH knew anyone who would come in from out of town and the person never left a number or name we couldn't call them to tell them they had the wrong number. Poor girl was probably waiting all night for a phone call. (this was before we had the caller ID)

no and I don't get why anyone would.

You want me to call you back, leave a SHORT message. My parents insist on leaving me 4min messages telling me everything they were going to tell me on the call. I figure there is no reason to call back then since I already know what they are going to say.

Once when I was a teen and caller ID was new my mother acdently dialed wrong late at night. The next night in the middle of the night the guy called back and reamed her for her "kids" crank calling and waking him up. So you set an alarm for 2 am to call the people back??? I have more important things to do with my life.

How about saying,

I just called to say I love you
I just called to say how much I care
I just called to say I love you
And I mean it from the bottom of my heart.

If you see a phone number on your Caller ID or on your cell that you don't reconize it and they don't leave a message do you call the number back?

nope.

If it's important, they'll leave a message. If not, then why should i bother?

Only once. My DS has a cell phone for emergencies - he only carries it to play rehearsals. Well, the phone kept ringing at home with an unfamiliar number so he didn't answer. I finally called the number and talked to the woman there - she had a daughter DS's age and we spent some time trying to figure out how they might know each other.....

But eventually I told her his phone number and she was so embarrased - SHE had been calling his number thinking it was her DD's number! And she told me that now she had to apologize to her daughter because she had given her heck about not answering the phone.

The unknown other mom and I had a good laugh about it.

Your friend is crazy. :dance3:

Unless it's a number I know or they leave a message to call back, I totally ignore numbers on my caller ID. That's the whole point. To be able to screen your calls and only answer the ones you know or want to.

Right! That is the whole point of caller ID and yes my friend is a little crazy!

I've asked her a couple times why she calls the number back and she said it just drives her crazy...she thinks it might be someone she knows, but for some reason they are calling from a number she doesn't know  and I say, ok, even if that's the case and they wanted you to call them back wouldn't they leave a message?!

She isn't the only one though, I get calls at work too
saying "Someone just called me" and alot of times, the person who called did leave a message, but the callee didn't bother to listen to it, they just call the number back and of course I don't know out of the 50 people at work who called them. I HATE that!

My sister always calls back those numbers she doesn't know. It's so ridiculous. I only call back people I know. Since they know I hardly check my voicemail, they usually don't leave a message, but do expect me to call back.

You want me to call you back, leave a SHORT message. My parents insist on leaving me 4min messages telling me everything they were going to tell me on the call. I figure there is no reason to call back then since I already know what they are going to say.

My MIL used to do this when we had an answering machine on a landline phone. She would leave her 2-3 minute message, the machine would hang up and then she'd call again and continue with the conversation. Usually on the 3rd message she would finish up and ask, "Why does your machine always cut me off?" Hmm...:confused3

Now with just cell phones, she only leaves 1 message (I still consider it lengthy), but does not call back after the cut off.
