Do you avoid paying DVC weekend points, or stay anyway?

Do you try to avoid weekends at DVC paying with points?

  • Yes, we stay S-Th, pay cash or move on weekends

  • We stay right through the weekends using points

Trying to get a feel for how many members try to avoid paying a premium for DVC weekend points.

We always stay Sun-Thu and then move to a non-DVC resort for Fri & Sat. To me, it's a waste of points for weekends!

This upcoming thursday will be our first trip on point and yes we're staying the weekend (2 weekends actually), but after reading here and doing some more leg work I can see this NOT happening in the future. We've only got 180 pts so they don't stretch too far, especially in the peak season which we'll need to do in the future because of kids school schedule. (We pled stupid with the school this time and they let us go, kids in K and 1st).

Next trip I'd like to do the poly sun-thurs then shoot over to a moderate or maybe check out the newish pop-century. I also found out today (here) that you can pay cash for DVC rooms on the weekends. That sounds cool too. At least until we buy another contract. I can see that happening in a few years becasue we just found out we're about to have another disney baby!!! (DB?) :) :bounce:

Gawrsh!!! 3 days to go and I'm not packed yet! Eeek!

stayed right thru' but this year we decided after listening to all that's said on this board to go Sun to Thurs.
At the weekends we are using the AP rate to try out Pop Century to compare it to SSR.

To us it's the cost of doing business. On our March trip next year we'll be there two weekends with a Saturday to Sunday to stay.

DW says it's not worth packing up to move.

Our first trip home to OKW in July, we are staying in a DVC Sun-Fri. Our Christmas trip, also at OKW, we are staying 8 nights, and not moving for the weekend. My husband said he can't be bothered moving on weekends. We have enough points to stay right thru, and it works for us. :)

We generally move to a non-DVC resort or switch to a studio for weekends. There is the occassional exception such as this coming November's trip. We're staying Tues-Fri nights (hoping to add Mon night at the 60 day mark !) and just didn't feel it was worth the effort to move for that final Friday night. We're driving over to Port Canaveral for a Magic cruise on Saturday morning.

We've changed our long weekends from Friday through Sunday, to Saturday through Mondays to avoid both weekend night stays, but we have always taken long weekend trips. Our very first trip to DVC was only a Friday and Saturday night stay. That's just the way it works out for us.

this is very hard to answer, if i have the extra points i would rather not move and stay on points thru the weekend, but if im trying to get as many vacations out of one year on points, i will pay cash on the weekends.

for our first trip in a few weeks we are staying at the Poly fri and sat, then moving to BWV.

If we stay a week, we use the weekend. If we stay 10 plus days, we use 1 weekend.

We usually plan for the Sun-Thurs stays, but when stays are longer, we just stay put on points. Weekend nights for us only happen during longer vacations....unfortunately, they're usually during premium seasons....when the points really add up quickly.
If I understand correctly, if you use cash for weekends you have to switch rooms, which can be a bit of a downside, too.

We purchased DVC for "one trip per year" ... and we stay for a full week. In fact, we are very likely to consume 3 weekend nights in one stay (arriving Sat and departing Sun the following week).

I do not consider the "cost per night" - but instead the "cost per stay." Moving in/out would be far too much trouble ... especially given the schedule of our conference activities.

The thought of changing resorts (or even rooms) during vacation is completely unappealing to me. I echo bwvBound's opinion exactly. It's the total stay, not the nights.

We bought exactly enough points for 7 nights in a BWV 2br durning magic season because we knew that's what we'll need when we return to WDW.

I have great admiration for members who make the extra effort to pack and move during their vacations. You're much more tolerant than I am when it comes to vacation disruptions.

We've only tried the moving game once...at OKW we were in a studio for 3 nights, then moved to a 1 BR for 2 nights. The only downside to the move was that the 1 BR wasn't ready till late in the afternoon, close to actual check in time. Was a bit of a hassle, but we really wanted to try the 1 BR!
Will be switching from SSR to BCV during December trip....most of the trip is at SSR, but I'd like to be at BCV for New Years celebrations. :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

On our first trip we spent the first 2 nights in a studio and then switched to a 2 bedroom for the last 6 nights which included 1 weekend night (we just opened the door to the attached 1 bedroom - didn't have to move!).

We will probably always either stay in a studio or another resort the first one or two nights for a couple of reasons: to save points, but more importantly in case our flight is delayed or we have to cancel for some reason we would not have to forfeit all of our points. The studio was a completely separate reservation. We usually travel in late March or early April so delays because of a storm are a concern.

For us, it gives us an opportunity to try out another resort--would love to stay at AKL one of these stays. Disney moves the luggage for us while we're at the parks, so it's not a big deal to us. But I can understand how some would find this a hassle. My kids love moving to a new resort. One year we did OKW, VWL and Vistana (our offsite timeshare) during a 12 night stay.

We sometimes move during our WDW stay but if we move it's from one DVC resort to another. We don't mind moving for different resort experiences but after staying at DVC, we have no interest in staying in non-DVC resorts. We bought enough points to include weekend stays and in fact, most of our short stays are long weekends---Friday through Monday or Tuesday.

This is not always true. We did a Saturday with cash in Feb., you don't have to move but you do need new keys. BWV staff was great. they slipped them under our door sometime between midnight and 7am.
I had a member discount for the room but than ended up canceling that and using an AP rate from CRO. I think I saved about $100 over the cost of my dues/buy in by paying cash.

JMHO, as I don't mind spending money but will not overspend if discounts are available.

I can't really respond to this survey, as we do a combination of things. Since we live within driving distance, we've had S-Th stays; S-Thw/ a stay at US/IOA before, after or in the middle; we've spent Sat. nights elsewhere to save points; we've stayed straight through, and we've booked weekend only trips.
