I've a big dilemma, and I thought the multitude of advice from the boards might help.

I'm currently the deputy head of a primary school. My head is retiring, and she wants me to take over, I want to take over and know that I can do a brilliant job and really chance things and move things forward!

The problem is is that I'm really unsure about whether to apply, in case I didn't get it as I'd have to return to work the next day and face everyone!! I'm sure you all get what I mean?

Has anyone ever been in that position - what did you do?

I have a while to think it over as applications don't have to be in until the end of January!!!

Thanks, Everyone!

UPDATE - Had the interview on Wednesday and got it!!!!! Bit shocked and it hasn't really sunk in yet...... Thanks for all the advice!

I have been in that position in my previous job. My boss was leaving and I wanted to apply for his job. I actually didn't think I'd get it and 2 other people applied for it as well. I did get the job, however if I hadn't I was prepared to accept that the person who did get it was obviously better qualified or performed better in the interview than I did.

It's a tough choice but if you don't go for it, you'll never know whether you would have got the job - that is what made me decide to go for it.

That's exactly how it would be in my work if ever my boss was to leave (which is very unlikely!)

I would say go for it :) if you want it. Life is too short to let opportunities pass us by :teeth:

I know exactly what you mean!

I have let this fear hold me back countless times until eventually my boss just gave me the job anyway! But as everyones not that lucky, if you really want it you will have to go for it.

I am sure if you have the same outlook as Joh everything will be fine.

Good luck :shamrock:

This is what the public sector is like. Use the interview as experience. You have nothing to fear but fear itself. If you don't get it no one else will care but you. Stop worrying about everyone else. It sounds like you have confidence so go for it. YOU HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE.

Good luck.

My friend was a long term supply teacher - about a year - when a permanent position became available, she really wanted the job as she liked the school and only lived around the corner, but was so lacking in confidence she wouldn't hand in her completed application form.

I asked her if I could hand it in, as then she almost wasn't responsible, she agreed and before she could change her mind I nipped into the Head's room and gave it to her. She got the job!

The moral is - give it a go. You'll only regret it if you don't.

Good luck - but I'm sure you won't need it.

GO FOR IT !! you may not get another opportunity like this. so dont let the chance slip by!!

Another one here who says go for it! :goodvibes

Good Luck! :goodvibes

Ditto the 'go for it' please get over your fear of rejection, if its for you it won't go by you.

If you truly you believe you can make a difference in applying for and getting the job you must go for it.

Too many people take promotion just for the pay rise, at least you want to advance for the right reasons.

All the best, and I hope you are successful. From what you write, the children would benefit from having you as a Headteacher. :)

What's the worst that could happen?

If you truly want it then seize the opportunity, don't let fear hold you back!

Good luck :goodvibes

Hi Kev,
Go for it- I've been in the same position recently (I almost didn't appply as I knew how tough the competition was) and I didn't get the job, but it was fine afterwards and I didn't regret trying at all- I think my manager was impressed that I'd made the effort- so it earned me brownie points and gave me some extra interview experience even if I didn't get what I wanted. I was surprised how nice/supportive colleagues were afterwards too.
Just go in with a positive attitude- you CAN do the job and you have nothing to lose- you'll probably gain respect if anything- good luck!

Lindsey

Kev - if you want the job than you go for it.

I wish you all the luck in the world!

And yes, if I wanted the job I would go for it. If it was a promotion for the sake of it I wouldn't, I would have to want to do it :)
