Finishing first is overrated. Being a good person rarely pays off, if it did everyone would do it. It’s still the way.

Not always. My husband is a serial entrepreneur. He's had some big problems along the way because he's a nice, honest, and ethical guy but in the long run, he's done really well in large part due to the respect he has within the industry. Being a fair employer who treats his employees well has led him to have a really loyal group of employees so that during the great resignation only two employees left. One moved out of state to be close to his fiance who was in grad school and the other left for a better-paying job. My husband wished them good luck and they parted on good terms. The only one who left for the better-paying job ended up asked to return because he hated his new job. It wasn't nearly as fun and enjoyable a place to work.

During the lockdown, his company was deemed essential to national security (oil and gas) so the manufacturing and repair staff still went in to work. The company did what it could to protect the employees including separating the in-person group into 2 groups with each group working 3 days on and 3 days off with each team having its own supervisor. A cleaning crew came in overnight to disinfect the workspace between the groups. The staff respected the rules because they knew my husband and his business partners were doing everything they could to keep the doors open while trying to keep the staff safe. They also offered incentives to encourage staff to get vaccinated. Today, they still have mostly the same staff they had during COVID and have grown as well I think in large part because of the strong employer/employee relationship.
