Now that Song has a 50 lb. limit for luggage, do you take the time to weigh your pieces before leaving home to make sure? Do you simply put it on a regular home scale?

Yep, that's what I do. It's pretty close. However, last time we flew our big suitcase was 2 pounds over and I had to take some stuff out at the airport... or pay extra, I think it was $70.

Bathroom scales tend to be inaccurate. Just because it seems to show your own weight (100 to 200 lb range) correctly does not mean that 50 lb will be measured correctly.

Some folks have gotten away with slightly overweight suitcases by checking them with the "skycap" fellow at the curb outside.

Don't know if you can ask the counter agent to re-weigh it on a different scale if it shows slightly over 50 lb.

I do now! After my husband's bag was over the limit once and it cost us $50, I now weigh myself then pick up the suitcase and weigh myself again while holding it. It may not be totally accurate, but gives me a good estimate about whether we are close to the limit or not.

My experience has been that skycaps don't concern themselves with details like weight limits- they're more concerned with their tip.

Anything you can do at the skycap or the gate, instead of the ticket counter, you should do. The skycap wants a tip, and the gate folks just want to get the plane loaded.

Very true!! I flew EWR to LAX with a large bag and checked it with the sky cap at the crub(NO questions asked). THen on the way back we had to check in inside and our bag was actually 75lbs so we couldn't take it. We had to get a box and put 25 lbs in there. I will weigh them for now on.
My dh is big so 75 lbs didn't feel like a lot to him or we may have questioned it before we left.
