Do We Own Our Threads?

Do you think that the original poster has a right to decide the direction of a thread? I'm not so much talking about a "hijacking" of a thread as much as a progression of a thread. Or a decision that the original question has been answered so the thread should then be allowed to die. I'm also not talking about the nasty turns that some recent threads have taken, but just every day threads on the community forum.

Once we start a thread, should we then decide the direction--do we own the thread?

I think once you post on a community board you have to accept that everyone had an opinion and is free to post it.

If people want to control conversations, they should use the PM feature.

My general understanding is that anything posted on a public bulletin board is just that, public and thus not "owned" by anyone.

Basic net-iquette would say, however, that it's generally rude to hijack a person's thread for personal conversation, but there's no rules against it. :)

You seem to have gotten your answer. I guess you can close the thread now. :lmao:

I don't know if you own a thread, but I certainly feel that you should have a 'responsibility' to a thread that you've started.

There is nothing that peeves me more than a poster who starts a thread and then either rarely comes back or never comes back. There are a few that routinely do this and I can't stand it.

If I start a thread (especially a meaty one), I won't start it unless I know that I am going to be near a computer to step in every now and again. I think it is respectful to other posters and it keeps YOUR own threads on track because you can fine-tune it as the thread progresses.

But to own it? No, no one owns anything on a public free-for-all.

Only your own post is under your control. The OP doesn't have the power to edit any portion of a thread they started other than their own posts therefore once you hit submit it's fair game. The OP can simply not return if they don't like it.

Would you go to a cocktail party and tell everyone in your circle that they could not talk about anything but the subject you brought up?! No way.

Unless the thread was started by DVCLiz, I see no reason NOT to go a little :offtopic: ;) :goodvibes

hey bob.. how you doing?

Correct Christine!
I look forward to every response, the same as I still Look in my "SnailMail"
Box every day!
I posted an innocent Question last week, and it went WAY out of context within the day...The moderator closed it and I felt so bad.
I am afraid to ask any more questions for fear I may somehow start another controversy!!
Example.....Anyone Love WDW!?!?!?!(just kidding!)
Once it is on the Screen, we don't own it anymore,,you know you are putting it out there for public scrutiny!!!!

On behalf of T&B, I say "Stop this! Stop it now! This isn't your thread, it is hers!"

T&B, I wouldn't blame you if you took your ball and went home.

My thoughts exactly! I even recently started a thread asking why posters abandon their own threads :confused3. When the thread-starter has asked a question or for opinions and then never comes around again to reply to those of us who have taken time to reply, I feel like I wasted my time posting . It is unthoughtful or even just plain rude to do that.

ETA: I think the general consensus on my thread was that the thread-starter is the "host" of his or her thread.

No we don't. It cracks me up when someone states, "No flames, no flaming please... etc."

:rotfl2:

Oh ok since you asked nicely... even though your OP was a load of crap.

What I don't like, is when someone posts a controversial topic, starts a debate, and because they don't like the direction the debate is going, decides to ask for the thread to be closed. what about the poeple who are debating? What if they want to continue the debate.

If you start a thread, you should not be able to ask for it to be shut down. The moderators will take care of it if it gets too personal, other than that, if it is alive and kicking, it should be allowed to go on.

bananiem, are you saying that Mr Slydell didn't say it well? :rotfl2:

Christine, I totally agree and I do wonder why people start threads and then don't come back. And I don't mean threads that venture off topic, but threads asking a question and then they don't come back to say, "thank you" or make comments. Make ya wonder. Doesn't happen too often, though.

I search my user name to see threads that I have started and threads that I have posted on so I can track threads that I want to keep track of. Maybe there's an easier way, but it works for me and that way I (hopefully) don't forget threads.

MOMTOMOOTOO, :rotfl2: What did you slip into your coffee today and will you please share? :teeth:

Cool-Beans, you're obviously drinking the same thing that MOMTOMOOTOO is drinking! SHARE, folks, SHARE!

GOOFYsince71, We need a link!!! I love to read closed threads. :cool1: I am such a cheap date...

Froggy, they call ME a troublemaker??? CB, he is hopeless, I'm sure that Froggyswife will agree that there is no controlling the uncontrollable!

I agree with you to an extent but at the same time, there comes a time on some threads where the OP may want to just throw in the towel. I posted a thread the other day expressing sadness because my kids are not invited to my nephews wedding. I followed up thanking people for a new perspective adn saying we were not going to pursue it all and figured that was that. Next day, there were tons of answers like half of which acted like I was being rude and that I would be crashing the wedding with my kids. Telling me to get over it and such. I was tempted to just ignore it but I did post again saying bascially to chill out and not accuse me of doing something I was not planning to do and had SAID I was not going to do. I had decided at that point that if it went on I was not answering anymore. Thankfully, it died off.

So, yes I hate it when someone just bails for no reason and I don't think we own our threads but I think it is not unreasonable for the OP to try and keep the thread on track. I don't think it is rational for anyone to "take their ball and go home." ;)

yes she (dw) will agree that i am pretty much uncontrollable..lol
