Do they check ID with AP discount?

We will be traveling with our family and DH and I have APs. So my question is if my brother or sister want to grab a souvenir with their gift cards, do my DH or I have check out with them? I would assume so to check ID with the AP. What have been your experiences? They are little so they will be given gift cards to purchase souvenirs and such.

I have been asked for my ID on a consistent basis when using an AP discount on purchases. Though I typically just hand over my AP, ID and gift card (or credit card) upfront at the time of purchase without needing to being asked anymore.

I have always been asked. Also, unlike Disneyworld, they need to scan the ID, because different levels of passes have different discounts.

We've always been asked. And (last I knew) they will not complete a transaction for a third party using someone else's AP. So you'll have to be the one to hand the merch and gift cards over along with your AP.

BFF was not allowed to complete a transaction for her teenage daughter because the CM saw her daughter hand her the item and the cash to pay for it. Luckily her daughter also had an AP.

On the last several trips, I have been consistently asked to see my ID with every merchandise purchase, regardless of payment method. The CMs ask to see the ID before they'll scan in the AP for the discount and they have required the person with the AP be the one making the purchase (i.e., the credit card must belong to the AP holder or the AP holder must be the one to hand the CM the cash or GC).

Yes - this was our experience as well. Especially at the Disney Store at Downtown Disney. I was also asked for an ID with my Disney Visa (not an annual pass discount) for a purchase over $50. Unfortunately I had left my license at home in my wallet after a flight, and they were quite adamant that I couldn't make a purchase without my ID. My sister had the make the purchase for me with her card.

I used to never get asked for ID. On the last few short trips, we were asked every time we bought merch and almost everytime at a Counter Service. They're cracking down, and I'm glad. Let's keep it fair.

Every single time. Not for table service, but that's because I hand over my credit card with a matching name.

This is so weird. I just got back from a three day trip and was not asked for my ID once the entire time (1 merchandise purchase, 1 TS, and a whole heck of a lot of CS). However, I usually pulled my ID out of my pocket at the same time I pulled out the AP and debit card, so maybe since they could see that I was holding it and willing to show it, they didn't feel the need to verify.

So what if we do a meal that someone else is paying for but we are there and eating with them. Shouldn't be a problem right?

If it’s being paid with a CC, it has to match the name on the AP, regardless of who is at the table. YMMV depending on the CM. I would think cash would be easier to do that with, but the rules of the AP are that in order to get the discounts, the AP holder has to be the one paying.

I'm just verifying that what DisneyJamieCA says is accurate.

If you're being 'treated' by others they will need to pay for the meals in cash. If it's paid by handing the money directly to the server or a cashier, you will need to be the one to hand it over.

As others have said, being asked for an ID is hit or miss. I have noticed that they don't check as often during busy times as when it's quiet. It happens more at restaurants for me than stores. I have a signature AP, so when we go, I always just make sure to buy the food for our whole group, then I have them pay me back in cash.
