Bedbugs & body fluids & mites...oh, my! Being's (I like that) I can't fit my mattress into the trunk, I suppose I'll have to forget reading this thread, too. But I'll still be smuggling in my own pillows & comforters, no matter how neurotic that is. :p

Blondie, that sounds like an awful lot of work. If I don't see the seminal fluid, bed bugs, blood stains, dust mites, etc..... then I will sleep just fine. I'm not bringing a special forensic light with me on vacation either. :D

I'm sorry but these bed bug things are freaking me out. What do they look like? How do i tell if my room has them? Ithought bed bugs were like the boogie man. I thought it was my mother's way of getting me to change the sheets. Are crabs and bed bugs the same thing? With crabs and Bunchy shorts I'd look like a freak walking around Disney.

I travel weekly on business, and know that hotels dont change the bedspreads or comforters after every guest. (I try not to think about it). In better hotels (I know they do it at the GF concierge and standard rooms, and at the AKL and CR concierge), they triple sheet the beds, so the blanket is encased in sheets that are washed and changed. I always feel a little better when I have a triple sheeted bed.

There is also a travel item I see advertised in airplane magazines It is a sort of sleeping bag design, made of sheets so it rolls up really small and is portable. Then, the only thing touching you is your own sheets. Here's the link.

I found out some fascinating bedbug facts.

They are evidently "the new scourge of America" with a 10-fold increase in infestations from 1999. They are believed to be arriving in the suitcases of international travelers. More modern, safer past control tactics here in the US have left them more able to multiply. The adults are "oval, brown and wingless, about the size of a small ladybug." Like lady bugs (folks get infestations of these here in Indiana and by the thousands, they are NOT cute) they can hide in crevices and be hard to "spray." An adult can live for 6 months with no food.

They are not disease carriers and they are not fond of "filth." They simply need a tasty human host. They suck a bit of blood with a snout not unlike a mosquito's; they are nocturnal. You may not have a reaction until you have been bitten numerous times; their bites may cause malaise and nervousness.

Telltale signs of an infestation? Small brown and reddish-brown stains on the mattress and bedding. Also check visible cracks and crevices for visitors.

You really can learn everything on the Internet... I know I am checking the mattresses from now on when I travel! :)

OK, now that this thread is going to make EVERYONE paranoid about staying in hotels, and further ruin the tourist industry... do you think we can possibly put a lid on it?

Yes, PLEASE close it....I may NEVER leave HOME again!

Actually, at the risk of being totally flamed here, I think it's probably a good thing that we are aware that hotels are not as "perfect" as we may have thought. Although I must admit I figured Disney hotels were different. And I still do believe they probably take more pains in giving us a terrific place to sleep than alot of five star places do. But I've never been one to hide my head in the sand and I'm thankful to know that I must use precaution to keep my dear family safe and free of the horrors that await them out in the cold cruel world. I appreciate all the information you super folks have provided with this thread.

Geez, I don't even worry about stuff like that. Of course a chocolate mess or a stuck lollipop is a different story, but all in all I'm not that paranoid about germs. I can't imagine packing sheets, pillows & comforters in addition to everything else!
Oh well, whatever rows your boat....;)

We DO need to quit all this nasty talk. I confess that after my internet bedbug research, I actually gave our beds at HOME a once-over... TOO MUCH INFORMATION!!!!! "What you don't know can't hurt you..." :)

actually I'm glad this brought up. SOemthing I would never have thought of.

This has run it's course and stayed along way from the original question - it is now closed.......
