the lands in the Magic Kingdom?

I always associate the Grand Floridian with Main Street USA,
the Poly reminds me of Adventureland,
the Contemporary- Tomorrowland, and
the WL- Frontierland.

Am I crazy, or does anyone else think so??

:D

That is actually how it was planned.

You can see the comtemporary from Tomorrowland, you can see the Poly from Adventureland, you can see Wilderness Lodge from Frontierland, etc.

It helps with the site lines.

It WAS planned. The Contemporary was supposed to serve as the backdrop for Tomorrowland (check out how well Space Mountain and the CR line up). YOu can see the Polynesian from Adventureland.

As for the GF and WL, they weren't open in 1971. A Venetian-themed hotel was on the drawing boards up until the early '80s on the plot of land on which the GF now stands.

Actually, I think the Venetian was supposed to be between the Polynesian and the Contemporary, but the ground is too unstable to build.

So COOL!
I never knew that! Should have figured it though.

And DH thought I was crazy!

I love this! It's like when I stayed at the GF or Poly and just felt deja vu when I was in Main Street USA for GF and Adventureland for Poly.

Yes...it WAS the Asian Resort, not the Venetian, slated to be built on the land where the GF now stands. My mistake.

By the way, I HAVE seen pics of hte proposed Asian Resort, and it would have looked dreadful! Aesthetics notwithstanding, to generalize about "Asians" in such a casual, touristy manner (as if every country in Asia had slanted, pointy roofs!) is borderline offensive. I'm glad the plans were scrapped.

Thank God the GF was built instead!

You said it!

I did not even notice. How interesting! You learn something new everyday. :)

The Poly always reminds me of the Tiki room:earsboy:

Not to turn this into a debate, but the Polynesian isn't exactly politically correct, itself. Hawaii isn't even a part of Polynesia.

Now this is why I love the DIS! I've been going to WDW for how many years and I never knew that the hotels corresponded with the lands? I love the little things like this. It will make my trip in Two days!!!! extra fun. Thanks for the info!

I Am not up on demographics, but aren't the native peoples of the Hawaiin Islands Polynesian and Somoan?

I've always thought the same thing except I never thought about the Grand Floridian and Main Street. But, you're right. Maybe the Grand is Fantasyland because if some of us think we can afford it, that's where we're "living" - in Fantasyland. He He I couldn't help myself, I had to say it.

And, the Poly is right across the lagoon from Adventureland. Lined up perfectly.

Yes, they are, but Hawaii became a state of the union sometime in the 50's I believe. It is no longer part of Polynesia. They started building Disney World well after the fact, and they also changed the names of the longhouses recently.

I guess I just came to the defense of the Asian in a completely incorrect manner.

Those are strictly conceptual drawings of the Asian. The conceptual drawings for the Polynesian were RADICALLY different from what you see today. Check out this page of Tikiman's website for how the Polynesian was conceptualized:

There's also conceptual drawings of the Venetian, and the Persian, and where they were to be built here:

Can someone tell me more about how/where in Adventureland you can "see" the Polynesian, and how/where in Frontierland you can "see" the WL? Do you mean, "imagine" them fitting right in in those lands? I can't remember seeing them from MK at all, except maybe from the top of Splash Mt, maybe for a split second, lol.

chamoix, I think you're right. it's probably more of an alignment than actually being able to see them. :)
