Do the Maclaren strollers hold a small 6 yo?

Hello all,

New to the boards and I'm reading and debating on how and what kind of stroller to rent/bring to the world this June. I have a small 6 yo, and I have decided to use a stroller for him when he's hot and tired even though we sold ours years ago!:)
My question is, I was planning on renting a stroller (citi mini) from Orlando rentals, however after reading many posts on the board, (everyone has such awesome advise) I was thinking of buying a second hand Maclaren (volo?) to bring along instead. The Maclarens look lightweight yet sturdy, has anyone used them up to age 6 or so? Do they push and steer easily? I don't want to struggle with him in it-it says weight up to 55 lbs, he's not quite 50 and tall. I'm open to other suggestions as well!

Thanks! Rockin the World June 25th!!!:cool1:

We have a Volo that we bought this past Nov to use for our trip we went on in Dec. I have a DD5 who is 51 pounds and is a little over 46 inches tall. Although she was not the one who used the stroller the most, my DS2 did, when she was in it she was fine. No complaints from her at all.

Great! thanks for the input, I'm thinking for 1 trip he should be fine, I just did not want to get a stroller that was tough to push or steer with him in it.
The Orlando stroller looked cumbersome and I could see myself struggling with it on a bus- where as the Maclarens look pretty easy.
Just have to find one that won't break the bank!;)

Thanks!

Your 6 year old will be fine in a mac. My oldest even took a few turns in ours last year and she was 8 years old at the time (very tall but thin, probably about 54 lbs at the time). The stroller was still pretty easy to push/turn. You'll be fine.

My DD-almost-6 fits in the Volo just fine. She's 45" and 37-38 pounds. Pushing her in it feels like pushing nothing, so an extra 10 pounds shouldn't make a difference, either.

Fantastic! Thanks for the great input!

I'm off to figure out the stroller swap! Just found it and It is perfect if I can get an opening! I'm thinking Mac Triumph...any ideas on stroller tagging? I know I read something on the boards and forgot where.

Thank you:flower3:

www.babye-store.com has the volo for $69.99. That is where we got ours from. Great shipping.

My dd is 6.5 and we have both the Volo and the Baby Jogger City Mini. My dd is 53 lbs and 51 inches and the Volo was do-able but much harder to maneuver than the Baby Jogger. I also think although it is a little larger (not by much) the Baby Jogger is actually easier to fold and open than the Volo. the baby jogger city mini turns on a dime and my daughter likes it better to ride in. We have brought the Baby Jogger for our last two trips.

We have a Mac Quest and DS6 is 48 inches and about 46 lbs. No issues what so ever. He naps everyday at disney in the stroller.

Thanks for the great pic (too cute):goodvibes

My son looks to be about the same size, so I know he will fit. I have a bid on a triumph, (not sure what the difference is) and I'm still looking into the swap or the rental if I can't get a volo. I'm going to check out the website from disney4u and see what they have too. I'm not crossing off the city mini rental either-by the sounds of it that one is easy to manuver too. Tough choices!

Thanks a bunch!:cutie:

We have a Quest for our 6 yr old, and she is 52 pounds and 47 inches tall, and she rides just find in it.

Hi there! We bought a Baby Jogger Mini before our trip to WDW last September for our 2 yr old DD and had no problems with folding or busses or anything. It is super easy to use and I could see it being great for older or bigger kids.

Actually many nights, the 4 of us would split up...DH and older DD went off in one direction while the baby and I would go off in another. That meant that I ended up with the toddler, whatever bag we had that day, and the stroller. I had no problem getting her, myself and all our stuff back to the resort by bus at night. I could just wheel the stroller right up to the doors before having to stop and fold which is nicer than folding beforehand and lugging the stroller along. Once on the bus, almost every night we had to stand. I could just hold the stroller in between my legs and keep one hand on the strap if needed (daughter is always asleep in the Ergo on my back LOL).

Not sure where in Upstate NY you are, but if you are anywhere near me, you are free to check mine out and try it to see if it might work for your child. The seat is very roomy and the shade offers lots of protection. The steering is effortless as well...even one handed is great. HTH

Hi fellow NYer!
I'm in Saratoga Springs, I'll mapquest your area- not sure how far you are, but thank you for the generous offer! I really want a city mini, they just look more sturdy and comfortable, and after reading the posts it sounds like a snap to fold. I just don't want to spend that much knowing I won't use it after vacation!
I'm still checking out a stroller on line, and a stroller swap for the Maclaren Volo, either way I figure I'm still saving $$ by not renting at disney. Too bad there wasn't a city mini swap!

Thanks for the info!:goodvibes

There is also a newer Baby Jogger stroller coming out but not sure when. It will be the Baby Jogger Micro...basically a pared down version of the City Mini. I think the wheels are smaller but I do believe the seat size will be the same. I'm not sure what the other differences are. I thought I heard that they are going to be around $150.

If you go with the Mini, you could just rent from Orlando Stroller Rentals or if you did end buying your own, the resell value on these is very high and you may not be out almost any $$ at all. I have seen used ones going for almost retail on Ebay. There are also new ones being sold there with the Best Offer option. I actually got a really good deal on mine buy looking online for discount codes and then buying from a sporting goods store website. I ended up paying $149 shipped.

I bought a Mac Triumph and a Mac Volo for our most recent trip. I usually get cheap umbrella strollers but we are tall and they are hard to push. Also most only go to 40 lbs or so. We LOVED the strollers! They are easy to use and fold, comfortable, easy to push. My one year old mostly used the Triumph as it reclines. My 4 yr old mostly used to Volo but there were numerous times my 7 yr old DD used it. She is tall but thin, probably 45 pounds. She fit just fine. The Volo doesnt recline but you dont need it to at that age. It was the perfect stroller for an older child.

I got both on Ebay brand new pretty cheap. IT was SO worth it!

I just bought a Mac Volo for our Nov trip. We got an evenflo x sport for last year's trip and by the end of the week we were tired of pushing our small 5 year old in it b/c the handles were not long enough and it was tough to push. The Mac is sooo much better. DD is 5 1/2and measures 43" and 40 lbs. She fits fine with room to spare. We hope she will grow another inch by Nov so she can do space mountian! She is 43" without shoes now so mabye she will make it!

I had a really nice Mac Techno that was a total workhorse. One trip when my DD was 6 I forgot it at home! I knew that my DD still needed a stroller at night and at Epcot so I bought a stroller at Toys R Us in Florida. I had her try all the strollers at the store and considered the Volo but ended up with a cheap $20 Kolcraft umbrella stroller with a canopy. Since it was brand-new it worked great! It wasn't hard to push and it was big enough to hold my DD. I put something on the handle so I could pick my stroller out of the crowd.

So ... unless you are planning to go back a few more times (or if you have younger kids) I would skip the Mac and just get a cheapie umbrella stroller for this trip.

I'd recommend getting a volo for the trip (I've ordered from babye-store before - quick ship and good price!) for $50 - $70 and then ebay or craigslist it when you get back if you don't need it. You'll probably get most of your $ back with little hassle (probably $45 - $50 if no damage). I had a City Mini and a City Mini double - They are fantastic strollers - fold is VERY thin and easy and the canopy is awesome.....but it is quite a bit of $ upfront for a quick trip with a 6 yo. Resale is good, but more investment upfront and may recoup less. Either way - you get a good stroller with good resale! Have a great trip.

Good Luck,
Val. :goodvibes

I checked out the web site it definately is the best deal! I almost paid 100$ glad I didn't! The volo may be the way to go for me....I really want a city mini, but I'm in the home stretch and want to save all my money to spend in Disney!:)
