We will be staying at the Polynesian tommorrow night for my daughter's birthday and had planned on Gideon's cake for breakfast on her birthday. Her birthday will be our check out day and I am afraid to leave the lighter in the car in the July heat. Does the front desk have matches?

It is July you should not leave your luggage in the car. Just drop off your bags at the Poly and have Bell Services hold them until your room is available later in the day.

Dave

OP said check OUT day.
I've left my luggage in the car in July/August...

Is this lighter expensive? After using it, could you ask the front desk to dispose of it? I know nothing of lighters, just throwing out an idea?

I can’t speak about Poly but when we celebrated a birthday at VGC there were no matches to be had—not at the front desk, not in the gift shop, not at the bar, not at the DVC desk. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s Disney policy to not distribute matches. We waited until one of my sons arrived with his lighter. Good luck!

I'm sure someone somewhere has matches or a lighter (Maybe the front desk could call down someone from a restaurant as sometimes you can get a cake/cupcake at a restaurant and they put a candle in it) but also why not just keep a lighter on your person vs having to leave it in your car on a hot day?

Thanks for all the responses! I ended up calling the reservation line and was told the resorts do have them on hand. I guess we will find out tomorrow :)
Not sure why I didnt think about grabbing a cheap lighter and just tossing it. Im not a smoker and only have the nice long lighters for my candles.
Actually, the thought of matches terrifies me but I figured it would be an easy disposable option. We usually do leave luggage in the car on check out day, I could also look into having Disney hold the luggage but we are hoping to get moving fast right after fireworks so we arent trapped in the TTC traffic.

Not to be that person, but just to manage expectations, the reservation line having that level of detail regarding resort operations is highly suspect. That could easily be something they just make up (with all due respect to phone reservation CMs). Still worth asking the front desk if they have any ideas/solutions, I just wouldn't take the reservation line info as absolute fact.

Hope your daughter has a great birthday trip!

I think the stores at Fort Wilderness sell boxes of matches if you want to make a trip over there.

Remember the good old days when every restaurant or bar we went to had books of matches on the tables?

They were great for shimming up the bottom of the table if it was wobbly.

Yep, we collected them and had hundreds! Wonder what became of them...
Funny this subject has come up...just yesterday a friend was cleaning her basement and found her match collection. Along with those from bars and restaurants, she had the packs given as favors from our and other friends' weddings. It was a thing in the '80's and I hadn't seen matches at a wedding in many years. However, our nephew got married a few months ago and they gave boxes of wooden matches printed with photos as well as their names and date. Match favors have come a long way!

I was looking everywhere for matches when I planted my garden (extra sulfur for the peppers) my dad came over with a tin filled with matches from weddings they attended over the years.
