do parades in your town throw candy

I posted this somewhere else but at the last parade I was at (a small neighborhood golf cart parade :teeth: ) the first cart (float) threw candy. As we were a bunch of adults, we didn't run out to get it. The last cart (float) came along and the kids in the cart got out, gathered the candy, got back in, and went on their way. It was a very funny moment. :lmao:

Yes they do throw candy in our town parades and man does it hurt to get beaned in the head with a tootsie! :cool1:

Yep, some of the groups/floats in our 4th of July Parade throw candy. Always nice when they come closer to the curb and toss some directly to the kids who aren't as aggressive in grabbing the candy or are younger and don't run into the street :)

We did until a few years ago. A woman was on a float pulled by a large truck during the Christmas parade. She stepped off of it or fell or something, and was pulled underneath. She was run over right in front of her children. It was very sad.

Our town throws candy at the parades and I wish they would stop the practice. I hate to see the pushing and shoving to get the less than penny candy and that's just the adults!! ;)

Seriously - I hate to see kids get their feelings hurt when they aren't strong enough to get to the candy.

Home of the Mardi Gras. Beads, cups, underware, moon pies, stuffed animals. If you can imagine it, they throw it. :thumbsup2

Us too!! :woohoo: For Mardi Gras and Christmas (no underwear during Christmas!).

Almost forgot St. Patrick's Day!

Yup, lots of candy thrown at our Fourth of July parade. Last year, I got beaned in the head by something hard thrown by the Little League champs. It really hurt. This year, the groups were a little more sensible and threw the candy to the curb. I was grateful for that since one group was throwing one kind of hard candy the size of a golf ball. Also, my little kids usually couldn't beat the bigger kids to the candy. That's a good thing.

I feel a bit like a neglectful parent, because our boys are 5 and 2, and we have yet to take them to a parade. (Disneyland in September will be their first!)

But when I was kid, the parade in the small town we lived in threw small packets of colored sugar crystals - The main industry in town was a sugar refinery. I wonder if they still do that...? :)

They used to throw candy. Now if they want to give out candy they have to have people walk the route and hand it to the kids. They can't throw anything. The city didn't want kids running into the street.

Where to begin?? Let's see, in my hometown of New Orleans, they throw lots of food from floats. Mardi Gras parades throw moon pies, chee weez, assorted potatoe chips, and let's not forget coconuts from the Zulu Parade! St. Patrick's parades throw heads of cabbages and potatoes! Seriously!!

Yep, real coconuts. They are the prized "throw" from a float rider in Zulu. They are decorated and painted nicely but really aren't thrown from the float. Riders hand down the coconuts to the lucky person in the crowd.

Whew! I can just see someone trying to explain that one in the emergency room. :rotfl:

For our annual Founder's day parade here in podunk Iowa, they always throw candy. We have it down to a science, too. You sit at the first part of the parade route with your Walmart bag and collect the candy and lots of it. What a haul!

We're not allowed to throw candy from floats anymore, but you're allowed to walk alongside the float and toss it off to the side of the road. In the past couple years however, more and more just aren't throwing anything.

about 10 years ago all of our local parades stopped the throwing of anything from floats you must have people on foot hand it out ( they say for insurance reasons )

As someone who grew up where they didn't do this, I have to say I thought it was bizarre the first time I encountered it. My son was barely 2 and I took him a 4th of July parade and he could not understand why he was supposed to pick up something that was 1) in the middle of a street where there were moving vehicles 2) on the ground and 3) came from a stranger. :confused3 other people kept encouraging him to go get the candy and he'd just look at them like they were out of their mind. Since I didn't really want him eating all that candy, I certainly didn't discourage him!
