Do number of points needed change during contract?

Good morning,

Like others, we are debating the merits of DVC ownership.

One item we are confused on is whether the number of points needed to stay at DVC resorts can change during the length of the contract.

That is, can Disney decide that, for example, a studio at SSR should no longer be 12 points but should be 20? Can they change the point structure like that after a contract is signed?

Thanks in advance for your help!

The only way they can raise the points on a studio would be to lower them on another room. If there are 5,000,000 points for a resort there must always be 5,000,000. If one room goes up another goes down. That is why DVC is so great. The other hotels can keep raising their prices.

LOL! I just answered the same question on another thread. No. One important feature of DVC is that the total number of points cannot change. They can "adjust" the point schedule by raising points in one season and/or type of room but they then must lower something else to keep it in balance. This has happened only once in the early years of OKW. Of course, the actual dates of Spring Break and Thanksgiving change and this causes a shift in how the seasons are laid out each year. So, actual date to date it's possible to experience an increase.

Points needed for non-DVC options can and do go up from time to time.

Thank you so much for the quick replys!

This is part of what makes DIS so special.......

We have sent away for a packet from DVC and eagerly await it. I am thrilled with what we have read so far.

say a studio is 12 points for a particular night in Jan right now at SSR...next year they raise that same night to 14 points, somewhere else another studio must be dropped by 2 points because DVC can never go above a total # of points?

Yes, that is true. The one thing that can/has changed each year is the amount of dues you pay - now up to $800+ per year for our 200 points.

Yes, but it is also resort specific. OKW did this reorganizing of points once.

Dues and how much they rise or fall is also resort specific.

Keep in mind that Disney does not do this often. Its a real pain in the back end for them and members. In ten years they did it once, at the beginning of the program, at OKW. So it won't be a yearly reallocation of points - it would be a rare event if it happens.

One thing that I wanted to point out (that was not asked in the original question) is that the number of points FOR DVC RESORTS do not change. The number of points necessary to cruise, for instance, is negotiated each year between DCL and DVC. This is true for all non-DVC resort uses of points.

This may or may not be important to you, but I thought that it merited a mention in this thread.
