"Do not punt." What does it mean?

If you told someone what you planned to do, but said that you were probably all talk and would likely wuss out and do the nicey-nicey thing and they left you a message that said, "Do not punt. Give 'em hell."

...what does the "do not punt" mean? I think it is a sports reference (football? golf?) but have no clue. "Give 'em hell," I do get.

It's a baseball term. Punting is like when you only hit the ball like 6 ft and it doesn't even make it past the pitcher's mount.

Tomorrow morning will be one of the tougher things I've had to do in my life. I intend to "give 'em hell", but I might wuss out. It just depends on my mood. It's always so much easier to be tough for other people than it is to be tough for yourself.

I'll have a neighbor guy-friend to support me, but DH won't be there.

It really doesn't matter much what I do, but if I'm pressed...and chances are good that I will be...I'd rather give 'em hell. But I guess I might be "punting".

Well, nothing came of anything. Everyone behaved very well and nobody started tossing around outrageous lies or saying really anything bad at all...at least to me.

It was a rather heartbreaking affair (for me, anyway), but considering everything, went as well as could be expected.

I have also resolved to say nothing at all about anything. If it comes up again, I will file a slander lawsuit and speak my mind in a calm, rational, legally-approved manner.

Went well enough AND I learned a new sports analogy. Now I know what "Do not punt" and "Take one for the team" and "Coming out of the box" mean. I'm like an encyclopedia of sports analogies now.
