Do Not Disturb Gone! (BLT)

I have a feeling the Oct 3rd security meeting went something like this
Disney Exec "How do we stop this? "
Every security expert in the room "You can't"

Disney Exec "How do we keep from getting sued when it happens?"
Disney legal team - "Uhhhh... useless room checks? "

Disney Exec - "Good talk team"

I think that's the entire point. This is to set up some sort of measure against liability, as many companies do. If they are able to thwart a possible attack then that's a bonus.

No, it can't be stopped. This is not about stopping it.

Agreed. Anyone can sue anyone for anything if they want to. But if there's "reasonable" measures being taken (and of course the law will dictate what is considered reasonable) then that liability decreases. The likelihood of WDW Parks and Resorts being punished for not doing enough is diminished. That being said, this policy won't really change things for us personally. I'll still lock up my laptop and dslr if it's not in use. I'll still change in the bathroom. I'll still lock the deadbolt and use the latch at night. I'll still be polite to the employees as they are doing their job, not getting off on "inconveniencing" guests. Thankfully, naps just make me more tired so I avoid them so that's not a concern for me or my son. I hope people who might be effected are able to find a way to make this work for them, no matter what that ends up being.

I would love for Disney to address the security issues at Disney Springs. This has been a concern since day one. It's a disaster waiting to happen. IMHO So many people herded through..no metal detectors. Does the financial gain outweigh the risks? Seems there's no other rhyme or reason...$$$$ vs. $$$$. I'm really at a loss on this one.

Met by their "SECURITY STEWARD"!
I love that one. Now that is an Orwellian term if ever I've heard one.
This is very much leaning toward an East German style Stasi situation if in deed you are assigned an agent of security to stick his nose daily into your business inside your private room. Disgusting and frightening. I'm glad I'm an old man. I don't want to be around for whats coming down the pike.

Oh good grief, my term not theirs. Some of you are acting like you truly do have something to hide. Someone talked to a cast member assigned to this job and he told them they would see him in the hallway as that was his job. And they compared them to a steward on a ship.

Regardless of the security issue I think this is a good idea. If guest know the room will be checked daily maybe they will be less destructive of the rooms, less likely to put too many in the room over occupancy and maybe less likely to sneak a pet in.

The person who used the term steward said it was nice to be able to chat with the cast member on a daily basis.

Maybe, some of us enjoy our privacy and do not like the intrusion. Sometimes, I like to sleep late or have "quality" time with DH . I have had items taken my hotel room and housekeeping enter at inappropriate times. Once..waking to a housekeeper using the toilet. Sorry, more than I'm willing to tolerate or find acceptable.

I seriously doubt you will have to give up either. There will be time for them to check the rooms and for your sleeping late or whatever. It's not like this is going to take very long to do quick walk through. If you have housekeeping then it will be done then.

How in the world do you wake to housekeeping using the toilet? :confused3 If you are going to say you never latch your door, then that is on you, not them. As Lynn said if this is deal breaker for some of you then stay somewhere else.

Thank you for posting this - I am surprised by the number of people thinking this was just Disney. Maybe because we just took vacations to NYC and Las Vegas, we just assumed this was the way most hotels were now operating. In our hotel in Vegas (Aria) they removed the do not disturb and we were told upon check in that security would check each room each day. We could call and request when they could come in which we did as we wanted to take naps.

In NYC we stayed at Doubletree at Times Square - our room overlooked Times Square which was amazing. Here they had do not disturb signs still, but a letter inside the room saying while they will honor the signs, if they are kept up for more than 24 hours a room check will need to be done as each room needs to be checked daily.

It is just the way it is - we called to ask for a check in and were able to take naps undisturbed :)
But WDW’s still seems to be the most intrusive. That’s my point. They should look more carefully for suspicious behavior as should have Mandalay Bay. But instead WDW is choosing the cheaper & more convenient way to them at the inconvenience of their guests & that is to check daily whether there is suspicion activity.

DH left early for a meeting (in Vegas), while I was still asleep. They ignored the do not disturb sign. And, yep..her big stinkie woke me up. It was a bit unnerving. Although, she had the audacity to yell at me for disturbing her!

ETA..Sorry, I don't think it's EVER okay for housekeeping to use the facilities in my hotel room.

I appreciate disparate points of view, but when someone posts several times in one day, it appears to monopolize the conversation. It creates a respond-to-defend environment instead of listening. If someone truly thinks they need to post every few hours or minutes in one day, that their points of view are that important (and giving space to others is less important), then it may better to create your own thread, post your essay and close it. Please stop re-iterating, and give at least a day for others to consider your sizeable number of previous posts. Continuing to reactively respond rather than listening (literally giving time and thoughtful pause), isn't a discussion- it's controlling the conversation. I look forward to hearing from guests on their personal experiences at resorts with this new policy.
There is an equal opportunity for everyone to respond. Even if ppl post frequently it, doesn’t prevent anyone else from posting. If other ppl don’t post, maybe it’s b/c they don’t care enough to post or agree with others who have already posted.

thing is, the new hang tag doesn't say anything that wasn't always the case.
It does, though. The old one was a direct request (and one that, in my experience, was always honored) to not be disturbed. The new one takes away the ability to politely make the request to not be disturbed. It is giving permission for Disney to knock on the doors whenever they want. If your DME bags arrive at 1 AM, and your room is occupied, there's no request to not disturb (knock and wake) you. The luggage delivery person might see the 'room occupied' sign and take it as an indication that because you are in your room, you necessarily want your luggage. We ask them to hold it any time it will arrive after 8 PM. We have put the DND sign out in the past in case the message was not conveyed to the person delivering the luggage. Going forward, I will tape a note to the door saying that we are sleeping, please do not knock with our luggage delivery.

I just met my security stewards

It was a request to not be disturbed. Doesn't mean they would always honor it, just like any other request you make of Disney.

I have two practical scenarios for our upcoming trip that are making me a hesitant. We usually stay club level...next time it will be at the Poly.

Scenario #1: Typically, we all wake up, get dressed, and then head to the club lounge for breakfast. While we are at breakfast in the lounge, we put up the DND sign. I bring my good DSLR camera into the parks, but I leave it in the room during breakfast because it's a pain to lug around or keep my eye on while I am getting food, balancing plates, etc. After breakfast, we go back to the room, brush teeth, and use the bathroom one last time. While the kids are in the bathroom, DH and I tidy up the room a bit, and put things in the safe. The DND sign while we were at breakfast gave us a way to signal housekeeping that "we aren't quite done in here yet." I want to be able to come back from breakfast and do our last minute things. I don't want housekeeping to be in the middle of cleaning when we get back from breakfast. Now, there is no way to signal housekeeping that we're not quite done yet. We can't put out the Room Occupied sign when we're at breakfast because...well...it's not.

Scenario #2: We've got two teenagers and sometimes they sleep later than me and DH. In this case, DH and I will go to the lounge to get breakfast while one (or both) of them stays behind to shower, get dressed, etc. If only one teenager stays behind, we can't really use the door latch because we need to be able to get back into the room even if the kid who stayed behind is in the shower. We could put up the Room Occupied sign, but my teenage DD would not feel relaxed knowing that she may not hear the knock and someone could come into the room to check on it. It wouldn't make me feel relaxed either.

I'm not a fan of this new policy as I feel it takes away some of the convenience of CL.

I agree, and all these same issues would also apply if someone were going to breakfast at a resort restaurant or food court.

The only solution is Guests will have to "set a time" that they will be back at the door that will allow enough time for the Guest inside the room to finish their shower and be available to come to the door and swing the Safety Latch.

It will be a "hassle"but that is the only solution to scenarios like this.

I think you're right...and to me that's a big loss of convenience. My teenage son can whip through a bowl of cereal like the Tasmanian Devil. At that point he's ready to go back to the room and hang out. He doesn't want to wait for mom and dad to linger over their coffee. Going back to the room at a set time really takes away the feeling that the club lounge is an extension of your room. People pay a lot for that convenience.
