I have such a craving for rice krispie treats (how odd is that?). I have an unopened bag of them that are still soft. The exp. date says Jan of '06.
Do you think they are OK?

I think they are fine. They just give an expiration date for staleness. Enjoy your treats.

I'd use them but I like to live dangerously.

is it a 'sell by' date? or an actual expiration. I always say "it says 'sell by' not 'it'll kill you after'."

Usually things like that are meant as a "best by" date. Since they are unopened and still soft, I'd probably taste one and see if they taste stale. If not, go ahead and use them.

Actually its just a date. Not a sell by or best used by.

then it is a best by date....I still say eat them. Look at all the people who eat year old stale Peeps.

Go ahead. I've had marshmallows go stale before. If they're soft, they're fine.

I think if they are still soft and white, it should be fine.

However, I did have a recent experience where I apparently had some REALLY old marshmallows (probably a year after the date), and when I tried to make something similar to rice krispie treats (energy bars), the marshmallows didn't melt properly.

To me: Rice Krispie treats are worth the ride to the store to get a nice fresh bag of marshmellows...

Wow, it's so weird reading this thread. I bought all the ingredients to make Treats yesterday when I was at the store. Low in fat, no cholesterol and not too bad in calories.

Thanks for the reminder. I think I'll throw all the stuff together around 4 and have one for a snack later on tonight. :teeth:

Don't do it unless you're prepared to be disappointed. It's worth a fresh bag, trust me. I craved them once too and went with the ol' "good enough" marshmallows in the cupboard - yuck, yuck, yuck! Never again will I do that, I vote for a new bag and sheer bliss at the first bite!
