Do laptops fit into the room safes ? If not,

Another benefit of staying deluxe I guess. Like someone else said, most theft is due to opportunity. The deluxe resorts are also harder to get away in and have more security cameras, so that is a theft deterrent. At a value or moderate, you can get out of a room and then out of sight within 30 seconds.

There are more AP ticket users than maybe you realize. They only need more than one key if they are doing EMH.

I did say most not all. I really don't think most people staying onsite at any one time are going to be AP holders. And I guess I am just always in the habit of carrying my room key even if I am with other people. (anywhere I travel, not just Disney) Just makes sense to me in-case we get separated or one of us needs to go back to the room and the others want to do something else. If you feel more comfortable locking up a laptop or anything I say do what makes you comfortable. I wouldn't leave cash laying around. Even if I did and housekeeping took it I might just think I lost it or forgot where I spent it. I think we all tend to do that on vacation :sad2:

Just don't do what one person did a few years ago (read about it on the DIS), put it under the bed. Someone on housekeeping staff stepped on it and broke it.

For those of you with cable locks, to what are you locking your laptop? I'm trying to think of an immovable object in the hotel room and am not coming up with anything -- well, the toilet, but that's just no good.

Some rooms have safes that will fit a small laptop. Some do not.

If it won't fit then the alternatives are up to you. The safest thing to do (and the only way to make the resort responsible for your laptop) is to see if there is a safe at the front desk for valuables. Otherwise you can go the cable lock route. I usually zip the laptop into a suitcase and lock it. Anyone intent on taking it would then have to break the lock, cut open the suitcase, or take the whole suitcase. It's not completely secure but I like it better than leaving the computer sitting out.

Make sure and back up your laptop to a hard drive at home (pictures, documents, etc) before you leave that way just incase something happens to it you havn't lost your personal data.

But we have taken ours for years to WDW and its never been stolen or messed with. Sometimes I put it in a drawer or one of our suitcases but I'd say more often than not I just leave it laying out and it's never been touched.
