Do laptops fit into the room safes ? If not,

Ours fit with about an inch or so to spare on each side. Pop Century. We have a larger laptop (17"? corner to corner I believe. I measured it trying to answer this question before our trip.)...
It didn't leave much room for anything else, DH kept his wallet in there when we went to the water parks and we left some very small items with it. But, that's it, the laptop would take up almost all the space.

1) Most laptops do not fit.
2) Alternatives.
. . . cable lock
. . . put in suitcase
. . . put in safe deposit box at Front Desk (most secure)

I just put mine in my bag but the cable lock is a very good choice. Your not going to keep anything safe from a determined thief your main goal is not to present a tempting target. Don't be fooled into thinking a safe is going to work they are not that hard to open just takes a bit more time then it would with a key.

When we look at crime stats where I work probably 80%+ is thefts of opportunity. Just taking the steps to put something up or use a simple cable lock is generally sufficent to keep these from happening.

The comment about using a password is a good one most people have more personal information on their computers then they think about such as access to banking accounts and the likes. I personally recomend encrypting the hard drive with truecrypt or something similar that requires a password when you boot the computer up if the person dosen't have the password they can reformat the hard drive but can't get to your data.

Just some thoughts from a cop.

Obviously I'm the only lone wolf that leaves two lap tops on the table in plain view. We never had any problems and I never even think about it when we are in the parks. We just trust mousekeeping ( maybe a decent tip for them helps also :thumbsup2)

Our laptop fit in the wall safe at AKL with room to spare. We were able to fit in our wallet, travel documents, and even our jewlery when we went to the pool.

To compliment what Dan said, if you want a laptop lock, but don't want to pay too much, here is a link to a web site (DealExtreme) that sells these kind of items really cheap (plus the shipping is free).

They have a laptop lock for about 6 dollars. It takes about a week for the order to get processed, and another 7 or 8 days to receive the item (with the free shippping), but if you're not in a huge rush it does save quite a bit of money.
I have bought stuff from them before and didn't have any problems.

I also found one on Amazon (a more familiar name for most people) for 13.06 here. It is a better know brand (a Belkin).

I don't have a laptop lock, but reading this thread has made me decide to go ahead and order one. Even though I do trust the Disney staff, for such a small price, why not invest in the extra safety (plus I can use it for other traveling situations).

It can be an inconvenience, but have the front desk hold the laptop when you are not in your room. Hiding it in your luggage or somewhere else in the room is not the answer.

1) The Front Desk WILL NOT "hold" the laptop.
2) You place it in the safe deposit box at the Front Desk.

I always leave mine out when I travel. I guess I trust housekeeping too much, be seeing as I don't stay anywhere I don't feel safe I don't think I have anything to worry about. The biggest concern I would have is that to may get broken somehow, not stolen. If it is in my room and no one except me and housekeeping can get in, what is there to worry about? :confused3

We were at the Poly 5 years ago. I ran my own business so HAD to have the laptop with me. I bought a cable lock for it and locked it up out of sight. I got back to the room one day to find someone had tried really really hard to cut that cable lock. It was frayed but still held. Nothing else was taken from the room that we are aware of. I called the front desk who said security would be right there. Security never came. That security cord paid for itself.

Like I said earlier, the staff can get tricked by clever thief. All they have to do is peek in the window and see something of value sitting on the table near the door. (The mousekeepers often open the shades to get more light in. Then they just walk right in and take it. If the mousekeeper is in the bathroom, they might never even see it happen. If they do see them, the person just acts like it is their room and they forgot to grab something. Don't think that I am being over paranoid. This has happened at Disney before and will happen again.

This is another reason to not ever leave any of your room keys in the room in clear sight when you leave. A thief could just grab it while the mousekeeper is in the bathroom and then come back later to clean you out.

When we stayed at the GF we used the front desk safe deposits: we placed ourselves our valuables in the box provided (they have different sizes), for which we received the key, as well as a receipt. The box was then placed in their safe - this is free of charge, and very safe.

That makes sense. I would not think that would be a problem in hotels with inside rooms tho. And seeing as most peoples tickets are on there KTTW card I doubt many people leave there keys in the room at Disney (at least on purpose)

We are basically talking about the same thing. All hotels I have ever stayed in(I have never checked a laptop at a WDW resort), take the laptop at the front desk and give you a claim check.

Another benefit of staying deluxe I guess. Like someone else said, most theft is due to opportunity. The deluxe resorts are also harder to get away in and have more security cameras, so that is a theft deterrent. At a value or moderate, you can get out of a room and then out of sight within 30 seconds.

There are more AP ticket users than maybe you realize. They only need more than one key if they are doing EMH.

We just shut ours down and put it in a drawer.

It took me years and years of arguing with DH about it to get him to finally do this. Prior to the drawer thing, he'd just leave it out on the table. :scared:

We've left ours out with no problem for years however after hearing about thefts I bought a smaller laptop and it does fit in the safes. I like the cable lock idea that Dan had, so I may get one of those.

If you're worried, there are thousands of good hiding spots. Just not the underwear drawer. It's always the first place they look.
