Do I understand my point system correctly???

My inlaws are planning to take us to WDW spring of 05. My MIL insists on the Polynesian and will be putting us up there. However, if something should "come up" and the inlaws cancel, I don't want my kids to be dissappointed. So, I'm thinking of reserving a DVC room on points as a "back up".

My use year is Feb, so if I book a room in March on 05 points, I won't lose anything as long as I cancel 30 days in advance? And I would still have until July 05 to bank all points?

I know it is not great to "hold" a ressie that we probably will not use and we have never done so before, but I am not cancelling our trip if the inlaws back out and I am not paying for the Poly when we have our DVC points that we could use instead.

Thank you for your expertise

Your understanding is correct. As long as you cancel 31 days in advance, the points will be returned to your Use Year and may be used for another reservation or banked- subject to normal banking deadlines.

There's nothing wrong with having a backup plan- DVC's flexibility allows us that freedom.

Enjoy!

Thanks, Doc, for your speedy reply :)

I will feel so much better with a back-up plan. Once you tell my three children when a Disney trip is planned, there is just NO backing out. (Okay, so I feel the same way, too)

The plus side to this trip is that if we do go with the inlaws, we can bank our 05 points and plan a 3 week trip in 06!!! ( I would LOVE a second trip in 05, but airfare for 5 just doesn't come cheap)

Thanks again!!:bounce: :sunny: :bounce:

Your plan seems fine and appropriate. Reading between the lines, is there a potential conflict there. Or put another way, are you likely to pay for this trip for the rest of your life even if it does go through? Will they cancel just to spite you?

Actually, neither. My MIL just has a tendency to say things (with the best of intentions) and not always follow through. I used to take it personally and get angry (I am borderline obsessive/compulsive :) ), but after 13 years of marriage I now "understand" her, so to speak.

I guess you would have to know her to really get it. But if something comes up at work, etc, she will postpone things. No big deal to most people if you put off a trip for a couple of months, but a huge deal to my children (maybe they inherited my o/c personality???)

On the plus side, she is kind, generous (hey, free trip to the Poly!! )and adores her grandchildren. The reservations have been made (umm, by me, when I sat down with her and locked in the dates and plan), so this trip looks like it will happen.

But since I do know her so well, I would feel better with back-up accommodations.

Good luck, I hope it works out and I'm very glad you won't have to PAY for this trip. Enjoy, the Poly is a fabulous resort.
