I'm wondering, what cash do I need on the cruise? The only thing I can think of right now is tips for room service.

Is there an ATM on the ship?

But...how about shopping in Nassau? I understand US dollars work fine there. Should we bring cash, look for an ATM in town that gives out US $$, or use credit cards even at the markets?

There is no ATM on board. Guest services will cash a personal check, but I'm not sure what the $ limit might be. They will also cash traveller's cheques. There is no fee for this service.

There are ATMs at the ports of call. These may have significant fees because you are out of the US.

In my experience, all of the larger shops take credit cards, and yes, US dollars are accepted everywhere. You may have better bargaining power if you are paying cash, especially with the smaller street vendors.

I bring small amounts of cash, some trav. cheques (I can always use them back home if I don't use them on the trip), and primarily use credit cards.
