We had an ADR during a low crowd time in 2015 (post- New Year's after the crowds dropped significantly) and while we were waiting for our table, we saw group after group after group be turned away. Heck, we had an ADR and had to wait 45 minutes for our table.
Just make the ADR. You'll likely get one. If you can't get one I wouldn't bother trying to walk up unless you were in that neck of the woods anyways. Use TP reservation finder or look for ADRs during your trip, too. I would be surprised if you couldn't get an ADR.
