effect if you read a book or go see a movie ?

you know it does, I cant believe I just admitted that to myself, I didnt think I was that guy

It depends. If I am on the fence then yes it does. It is mainly for movies. Whatever the newest and "coolest" books are, I have no interest in them.

We have found that if a critic loves the movie that we many times do not like it at all. If the critic really dislikes the movie we many times love it. That might mean that we do not have good taste.

As far as books go I have favorite authors and am happier sticking with them.

but what if the coolest book happens to be really cool and you dont read it cause you dont want to be like everyone else ? life is a lot harder then people think

Usually only if the review is that it is exceptionally bad.

Since I don't like all movie genres, rave reviews for me depend upon content of the movie.

I don't really read modern books. So reviews don't matter.

There are very few movies I won't see. I like to judge for myself. I like when critics agree with a movie I think I will enjoy but it does not dissuade me from seeing a movie if a critic gives it a bad review. I will still go and judge for myself. I go to the movies for entertainment period. I do not care if it is critically acclaimed or not.

Its not that I want to be like everyone else, my taste is vastly different than most people. I just read "An Old Fashion Girl" by Louisa May Alcott, she did "Little Women", I LOVED it! Most people have never heard of it. I am currently working through plays by Harold Pinter from the 1970s. Most new books out do not interest me. I honestly cannot think of a new one that is on my list to read. I am a strange strange individual! :goodvibes

None of today's critics interest me, but my brother and I used to watch Siskel & Ebert religiously because we usually agreed with them.

I miss that show!

I almost made this mistake with Harry Potter. Someone bought it for me when it came out. Good thing they did too.

I find rottentomatoes.com fresh/rotten system to be a pretty good indicator of whether or not a movie is worth seeing.

Us too! Critics hated it, must be pretty good!! :rotfl2:

I haven't paid any attention to critics since Siskel and Ebert. I do listen to friends opinions on films though. Books, I decide for myself.

Nope. I couldn't care less what anyone else says about a movie or book.

If either look/sound interesting to me I'll watch/read them and make my own opinion about them.

:thumbsup2 totally loved that show!!

I also look at Rotten Tomatoes for reviews- they show audience and critics percentages

Me too. Ever since the critics panned POTC, i have taken their advice with a large grain of sea salt.

Not at all. I can think for myself.

we all can, but the thing is you hate to waste money on a book or movie that you might not like so you try and bring in some easy resource's before making a final choice

For the most part, yes. For movies & shows we will check with IMDB & Rotten Tomatoes.

With books I tend to take word of mouth over reviews & from people I tend to share a lot of things in common with. If it's someone who loves watching something like Jersey Shore & Real Housewives that is raving about a new book, I know to skip it.

No. I don't trust the opinion of anyone who thinks his or her opinion merits special consideration.
