My DDs are five and ten. I have NO form of ID for them except their birth certificates which could belong to ANY child for all they know. Plus I don't want to take those with us....any thoughts? Are copies of birth certificates acceptable? Do they need to be notorized?

Unless they are lap babies under 2 and yours are not they DO NOT need ID for the plane.

Under 18 does not need ID. My son was traveling unaccompanied minor last year and this, so I went through and got him a State-issued ID -- he never needed it, even traveling alone.

To prove they are under 2. too many people try to "sneak" over 2's on for the free seat.

Mine was only ASKED for, never asked to be seen, for a flight to Nashville thru SW. They said bring it, never asked for it.

And for children flying on a youth fare. and it is for babies under two and over 14 days.

Just back today. We brought our kids birth certifactes and never needed them.

I think its a precautionary thing. We bring copies with us, but have never been asked for them. When I called about them because we just adopted two children and have yet to get their new birth certificates, the airline reservationist told me its because some people have four year olds trying to be passed off as two year olds. He told me they probably wont even ask and not to be overly concerned about it.

Actually incorrect... its not 18 but its 16 and up that you are required to carry an id.

Matt

Matt, I think you are incorrect this time.

Southwest Airlines' Customers will need valid state or federal government-issued picture identification1 to travel (passport, driver's license, state-issued identification card, or military identification are acceptable).

1Customers under 18 years of age are not required to show government-issued photo ID

From Delta:

One form of photo ID issued by a federal, state, or local government agency, or
Two forms of non-photo identification, one of which must be issued by a federal, state, or local government agency.
Note: Passengers without identification may be denied transportatio
