I was wondering if anyone has traded a nice pin from their home area with a cast member for a Disney pin, or is it only Disney pin for Disney pin? We are new to pin trading, but going to Disney in Dec and though my son might like to do the trading.

What a nice idea; I've heard of other guests giving little gifts from their home area to cast members. I bet they would appreciate a pin from your state! Let us all know!

They are only supposed to trade Disney pins off of their lanyards. Don't count on being able to trade your hometown pins with CMs for Disney pins.

If you're looking for trading stock, you might want to check out any Disney stores near you & especially Disney Store outlets. I was just at the Potomac Mills Mall DS Outlet - they had some nice pins on sale. Also, keep your eye on Disneyshopping.com. Sometimes you can get nice pins for, say, $3 instead of paying $6.95 (and UP) at WDW. Unless the official rules have changed, as long as the pins have "copyright Disney" or "[copyright symbol] Disney" & are cloisonne/metal style, they are ok for trading with CMs.

I think the 2nd poster misunderstood & thought the hometown pins were going to be presents, rather than possible traders.

agnes!

Yes, it is only Disney pins. Otherwise the lanyards would be full of non-Disney pins. DH came home with a Coca-Cola pin and a Rainforest Cafe pin from CM lanyards in December, but that was because he thought the Coke one was cool and the CM told him the Rainforest Cafe one was from Dumbo.

Disney pins only, please! :)

Unless things have changed, guests can trade Planet Hollywood, Rainforest Cafe and even Bongo's pins to and from CM lanyards. That is due to them being in partnerships with Disney. I occasionally even see a McD pin.
Other than that, it is a Disney pin for a Disney pin.
You have to consider the pins you are trading on to lanyards are for other guests, not Disney or CMs. And as someone mentioned the lanyards would be full of all sorts of pins, and not just Disney.
Generally the trading pin needs to read Disney on the back or front. I have even seen sporting events from WWoS. (Such as Pop Warner or AAU events.)

CM's can only trade metal/ cloisonne pins that have the copywrite disney on them and pins issued by operating participants such as rainforest cafe that which has the location walt disney world on it. There has been a number of times whilst i've have been out and about trading as a CM when i have had to politely refuse a trade because someone was trying to trade a non disney pin.

I've never tried to trade it myself, but I overheard a manager at DTD refuse a Rainforest Cafe pin. It's possible that maybe CMs that don't usually collect don't know about the procedures, but I can't say I've seen a pin on the lanyards. The pins at RFC are much cheaper too, so it's possible explanation too.

I do agree with the second bit! I wish more people thought this way, instead of how they're saving money by using fakes. :headache:

These are official rules:

•The main criteria to judge whether a pin is tradable or not is that it must be a metal pin that represents a Disney Event, Location, Character or Icon. Some pins from our Operating Participants are also tradable, but must represent the Operating Participant in a way that has aspecific Disneyland®Resort or Walt Disney World®Resort affiliation.
•Pins should in good, undamaged condition.

If you are a stickler for getting only a Disney pin then you better check the back beforeyou complete the transaction. I have gotten every type of pin you can think off of CM lanyards.

Most times it is my kids trading to get a pin with their favorite character. In that case, they like the pin so we keepthe pin.

The CM's should probably be a bit more aware of the pins they are recieving.

I always check to make sure my CM pins are official Disney pins when I'm at work. If they are not, I just take them off and switch them out.

Cms can only take Planet Hollywood/Rainforest pins if they say Orlando on them... if you are trying to trade a NYC PH pin, they aren't supposed to accept it.
