I had lunch with Mom, who is coming with me and the boys while my hubby is traveling for work. She has problems with motion sickness (I don't remember that from when I was growing up!), and doesn't like spinning rides. The guide that I have has described rides doing 360s pretty much every time I've read the description for a dark ride at either park.

So, am I going to be riding pretty much on my own with the boys?

Also, ds1 is a bit of a fraidy cat; he analyzes things waaaaayyyy too much, and finds all the possible dangers in most things. I was planning to hold his hand and maybe cover his eyes through FJ, but the description I read seems to say that I won't be able to see or touch anyone else even if they are seated right next to me. Is that one true? Both boys love HP, and it's one of the reasons I chose to do USF/IOA for this trip. I hate thinking my older son won't be able to handle the ride. And for reference, 3 yrs ago he nearly pulled my hand off in Spaceship Earth b/c he realized we were going up into the ball and he started thinking of how high it is.

For reference, he's 13 and can hike 20 miles in a day, but he is an Aspy and it affects how he sees the world.

Which particular dark rides are you asking about? Spiderman, Cat in the Hat and Men in Black all spin in parts. Are there others I'm not thinking of?

As for FJ, you might be able to touch the next person's leg, but that's about it. I know you couldn't cover their eyes, and don't believe you could hold hands very well.

I have a son much like yours... except mine is turning 18 in a month. At 13, he was old enough to be talked through things, and told to close his eyes if needed. I'd use the "try it once and if you don't like it, you won't ride it again" line with him. I'm not sure about giving him a guide book to read. This has sometimes backfired on me, as my son can still tell me exactly how high the drops are on different rides. Then again, he likes to know what he's doing and it does relieve his anxiety a bit.

I've been debating this approach with him for the last few days, as he can be talked through things fairly well, like how to get past ascending 1700+ feet on a hike or going 20 miles in a single day (camping and hiking MB requirements). We've talked a bit about the fact that there will be dementors and Aragog jumping out at him, but it was with the expectation of me being *right there*, holding onto him, as we've done with a few other rides at other places. I think I will push the "try it once and never do it again" tack as a starter. And if he and Mom go through the line and end up sitting it out, I'll sic his younger brother on him with how awesome the ride was and how he really needs to try it once.

Mesaboy - I was thinking FJ, MIB, Spiderman, ET, and anything else I haven't gotten to in the book yet, LOL. We won't be doing anything resembling a big coaster, b/c neither of my guys is into that yet. One of them is good for medium roller coasters, and I'm hoping this trip gets the other one into those as well.

You can see in this picture exactly how much contact you can have with your neighbour.

Good shot Damo! Thanks. :)

I'll show this to J and we'll talk more about it. I have about 3 wks to talk him into this...

Yep. Rode it yesterday and could barely see my buddy who was next to me. But I loved FJ!

It did kind of spin, and the spiders and dementors were scary even for me. Those dementors got a little too close for comfort!! But I'd at least go through the Hogwarts castle tour. That was awesome!!
