DNA Results Surprise!

Having your DNA stored by law enforcement as the result of committing a crime is nothing like volunteering to give it away to some for profit company.

I have seen that in some cases law enforcement has submitted DNA to the for profit companies to see if any matches found help them in their investigation. That seems like the worst of both worlds.

If my DNA helps catch a criminal or identify a John/Jane Doe how is that a bad thing?

Probably not a bad thing....

But it is rarely that cut and dried.

What about the instances where DNA is uploaded, turns out the suspect is innocent but the uploaded DNA results in unexpected matches like described in this thread that then result in heartache and destroyed families?

I did a DNA test, partly looking for unknown relatives. I come from a very small family-lots of only children or estrangement (partly my parents chose to distance themselves) and now, wha few relatives I knew I had have died off. Well, the test came back with a bunch of second, third, fourth cousins, but when I wrote to them (through Ancestry), of the 35 I wrote to, only one wrote back to let me know how we were related. To me it's been very disappointing. For instance, my mother had 3 siblings, yet estranged (her choice) from all. So I must have some cousins somewhere!

A friend of mine and her sister took the Ancestry DNA test, and they discovered there was, yet, a third sister.

The newly discovered sister had been born first but given up for adoption. The parents later married, and the other two sisters were born at some point.

They connected through Ancestry, and they did meet and are SO happy they found each other and have become very close. 👍🏻
