We are planning on using DME for the first time. I understand how it works when we arrive at MCO, but I'm unclear about the departure. My understanding is that because our eventual destination is Canada, we can't use the resort check-in. Can anyone confirm that for me? I guess I'm confused, because couldn't I just go on-line and check-in with the airline like any regular traveler up to 24 hours in advance?

You are correct. Resort airline check in is only available if you are flying domestically with certain American carriers. Since your end destination is Canada you are considered to be flying internationally. Because of this your bus pick up time from your resort will be about 4 hours prior to your flight's departure. You will receive a DME notice on your door the day before you checkout with the details of when the bus will pick you up.

Yes, check in for your flight online. I've done this everytime we've been there. I assume you'll be checking luggage at the airport so when you get there you can get your boarding passes then.

what do you mean "eventual" ? are you flying within the u.s ? if so if your airline is an approved us airline your good to go, if your flying direct to canada then its a no go !

we flew from orlando to buffalo, using airtran, and DME was used both ways.

I think they mean if your eventual flight ends up in Canada.

We flew MCO -> PHL -> YOW (Ottawa) and even though our flight leaving MCO ended in PHL, our final flight terminated in Canada, which meant that we couldn't use resort check-in. If your final flight ends in the U.S. and then you drive across the border, resort check-in is A-Ok.

We were there in May and used DME and what has been written is 100% correct.

Even if you are connecting within the US, if you are flying to Canada, you cannot use resort check-in. Also, they are very firm about the 4 hour bus rule. When you arrive in MCO you get the first bus available for your resort, but when leaving, you are assigned a specific bus (4 hours before your flight departure time) and you are supposed to be on it.

I would assume they'll try to accommodate you if you were to miss it, but I definitely wouldn't take the chance as they were very firm that we had to be on the bus we were assigned. It just makes for an awful early rise if your return flight is in the morning.

When I flew United to Salt Lake, then connected to my Canada flight, my flight was considered domestic, (because my first flight was domestic, MCO to Salt Lake) and was picked up at the usual 3 hrs before time. We couldn't use resort airline check in, so we picked up our luggage from the DME bus at the airport and checked in with the airline like usual.
I think the 4 hr pick up is only if you are flying from MCO directly to Canada.
The day before check out, DME leaves you an envelope on your door with all the info.

Four hours.... yep, I'm pretty sure that is what happened with us last time but we were flying to Calgary via Toronto via Ottawa (that's what happens when you fly on points on AC) - it was brutal, everyone was sick - stomach flu/food poisoning, DS took the ice bucket on the bus to vomit into. A long, long wait in Orlando airport for the flight, no lounges even though we had business class tickets. This time we are flying home via the US so hopefully it will only be a three hour pick up.

With the exception of being picked up 4 hours before your flight, think of it like flying another airline within the United States that is not apart of the Resort Airline Check-In, because those guests will have to do same thing like you when they get to Orlando International Airport.
