We may want to use DME for the return to MCO only, so I guess I sign up in advance, don't tag the bags on the way down but use them for the return trip, correct? DME will pick us up 3 hrs before our flight out and we don't have to deal with the luggage until we arrive at PHL and they'll be on the carousel as usual, right?

Thanks,

Do not use your DME tags for the return trip. The DME tags are only for your arrival flight. Putting them on will result in your bags going straight back to your WDW resort.

You can check your bags with RAC, but that's a totally separate thing.

Even if you only want to use DME for your return trip, I would still go ahead and sign up for it now. Just tell them that you don't have the arrival flight information or that you aren't going to use the arrival portion of the service. Even if they send you the luggage tags and the vouchers, you don't have to use them. Then a day or so before you're scheduled to depart WDW, make sure you get the confirmation stating what time the DME bus will pick you put at your resort. It is usually about three hours before your scheduled departure.

As Alesia said, RAC is separate from DME, so you'll have to check in your luggage with RAC. Once you've done that, then, it is correct to say that you won't see it until you reach your final destination airport. The luggage tags that Disney sends you will only be used if you plan to use DME and luggage service when you are arriving at MCO; they aren't used for when you're going home.

DME one way is fine. As PP stated, you don't use the yellow tags for the trip home.
You need to go to the RAC desk (usually in the resort "lobby" area)to check your bags in to be transported to MCO. Their hours, unless they have changed, are 5 AM to 1 PM. I also believe you need to check them in at least 3 hours before your flight time. They can print boarding passes for you there.
Have Fun

We are DVC, so I'm not sure if the request form is the same as it is for other resort guests. But, on the request form we use, it asks for each way separately. There's a checkbox asking if you want DME from the airport to the resort and a checkbox asking if you want DME from the resort to the airport. We have done one way many times. If you don't request DME from the airport to resort, they will not send luggage tags, but will send vouchers for the ride back to the airport.

Thanks for all the helpful replies. We actually don't have the flight numbers, SouthWest doesn't release our out bound flights until Feb 26 and the return flight even later, and I didn't know about how to check in our luggage for the return, RAC is one of the few three letter acronyms around here I'm not familiar with. We're at Boardwalk on rented points so I'll be using the info I received here.

It stands for remote airline check in. It works just like curbside check in at the airport.

DME does not handle you bags at all on the way back to the airport. Unless you wish to take them with you, and check them in at the airport. Then they are stored under the bus you are riding on. If you wish to hand of your bags at your resort you need to use Remote Airline Check-In. In essence, they are a tiny part of the airport, smack dab at your resort. Handing them your bags is the same as handing them off to the airport. You won't see them again, and won't be able to access them again, until you pick them up at your home airport.
