DME Luggage Transfers

I'm not sure about the average, because I don't wait in my room for the luggage to show up. But Disney aims to have your luggage in your room within 3 hours of your checking in at the resort. And during peak seasons, that window is increased to 4 hours.

Disney says within 3 hours of checkin. We've personally experienced anywhere from 1 to 7 hours, and the 7 hours was not during a peak time.

DME literature tells us to expect our bags to be in our rooms 3-4 hrs after resort checkin. I usually don't hang around waiting for my bags to show up...especially if my room isn't ready yet! And if it's later in the day, any time after 6pm, I tend to get my bags myself at baggage claim (don't use the yellow tags in this case). That way I can get settled in and relax without waiting for that knock on the door at 10pm, after a long day of traveling!!!

We're arriving after 6 in May. After hearing some horror stories about how long it takes to get luggage, think we'll just get our own bags. The driver of DME has no problem with us lugging our checked suitcases along?

Nope.:) But they should be tipped a dollar or two per bag for any bags they stow for you.

Also, depending on the airline you are flying, you may have to haul your bags across the terminal to the B side of the airport. B side is where the Magical Express buses are located.

Absolutely!!! I usually arrive on Side A, so that would mean arriving on level 3, going down to level 2 to baggage claim. Then back up to level 3, with my bags, and across the terminal and over to Side B and down to level 1 and ground transport. Now, understand, it truly isn't as bad as that sounds. But, it does take more effort than when arriving on Side B!!!

I always book early morning, non-stop flights because there is less chance of delays in the morning and non-stop usually means that our bags are on the same plane as us. When we arrive at our resort (usually about 12:00-1:00)we check-in and if our room is ready we stop in, freshen up, stow our carry-ons and head to the parks. If it is not ready, a quick stop by bell services to drop off our carry-ons and then head out. We usually stay at the parks until later and our bags have always been in our room when we get back. I never know how long it took. When we arrive back at the resort I go to bell services to get our carry-ons and anything that we have had delivered to the resort and the family goes straight to the room.

I would say about 3 hours. One time I came back to my room and someone else's luggage was in there. I thought for a minute that I was upgraded to the Poly from AS Sports and they were kicking me out the room.:flower1::flower1:

I'm not sure why having luggage delivered to your room a few hours after you check in is any sort of "horror story." Unless you have a late evening arrival, you'll probably be out having fun while your bags are delivered. When you return to your room, your bags will be there, and you won't know when they were delivered. (Put anything you'll want to have immediately at WDW into your carry-on).

You can certainly throw away the yellow tags and claim your own bags. Just be aware that the time you spend at baggage claim waiting for your bags and then taking them to DME will probably mean that you'll be on a later DME departure to your resort. I would plan on arriving at WDW 30 minutes later than if you use DME luggage transfers.

We had a 7 PM arrival and chose to let DME handle our bags. It ended up not being such a great idea, as one of our bags was delayed. Not sure if it was a Delta issue or DME issue, but when we called about our missing suitcase, they found that it was still at the airport. It wasn't going to get to us till after we were planning to sleep, so we opted to call to have it delivered the following morning. After a whole day of traveling (we started with a red eye the night before), there was no way we were waiting up for it. It was a minor inconvenience, but if were were to do it again, we'd probably make sure we had hand-carried what we needed (e.g. everyone's pajamas) during their given delivery window.

But that's what airline passengers are strongly advised to do anyway, any time they fly, no matter what the destination. Carry on luggage should have whatever the traveler will need for the first 24 hours at a destination.

Yes, that's true. One thing to clarify, though, is that you won't necessarily know that you have a missing suitcase until your others arrive at your room, hours after arriving in MCO. If we handled the bags ourselves, we would have been able to identify the problem right at the airport, not hours after arriving at our hotel.
