DME Luggage tags

Hi all,

To my fellow Canadians (maybe more specifically those that have flown out of Pearson in Toronto), can we use the yellow DME tags or do we have to pick up our luggage?

I've heard both arguments but no real consensus, so I'm wondering if anyone (especially anyone that's recently travelled there) can say with certainty whether we can use them or not?

Thanks :)

If flying through Pearson you will clear US customs at Pearson. Your checked bag with the DME tag will head straight to your resort and you will not need to claim it at MCO. This is true when flying out of any Canadian airport with US pre-clearance areas.

In case you need a third opinion. Yes you can use you yellow luggage tags and your luggage will make it to you hotel room. The only time you don't want to do this is if your flight arrives after dinnertime. It can take quite a while to get the luggage and they do have a cut-off of 9pm (or something close to that) for delivery that night.

If you are flying in the morning or afternoon and don't need anything in your bags when you get to the resort then by all means save yourself the hassle of lugging the bags yourself.

Thanks for the confirmations! Our flight will be arriving in MCO around 11:30am in October. Since we'll have one carry on we usually put a change of clothes each in the carry on as well as a few urgent things like toothbrushes, hair brushes, bathing suits... We are just going to relax the day we arrive anyway so if our bags didn't arrive until 3 or 4pm that wouldn't be a big deal.

Just know that you can not do the reverse. You must take your bags on MDE and check them in at the airport. If flying out of Buffalo though, you can check them at the resort.

Just to add that Canadians can use RAC provided they are on one of the participating airlines. We've done this coming back to YEG on United a few times now. Next time we're flying with WestJet so no luck there.

Is Air Canada on this list?

Here you go. All the participating airlines:
  • Alaska Airlines
  • American Airlines
  • Delta Air Lines
  • JetBlue Airways
  • Southwest Airlines
  • United Airlines
Straight off the Disney website.

Hmm ok what's RAC ? It doesn't apply to me I guess because we're using Air Canada.... but now I have to know what I'm missing out on!! :)

RAC = Resort Airline Check-In, basically the reverse of using DME when travelling to WDW.

I've never used it because I'd always flown Air Canada or Westjet.

We usually end up going with United just because of price. However last November we were offered a very reasonable upgrade to first class and add in the convenience of checking bags at the resort and going back to the airport with just our carry ones was just so nice. We got that for about what our WJ nonstop is costing us for our next trip. United put themselves out of the running by insisting that our flight there was worth nearly 700 bucks per person..that was just the out bound leg, return was way over 1000 each!

I used my united points and ended up on direct flights with air canada .... :)

just a thought on DME bag tags. Since Air Canada baggage claim changed to the B side at MCO it is now one floor above DME check in and not on the opposite side of the airport as it used to be. We have experienced waiting for luggage and it has not arrived at our room as late as midnight and later. These were late afternoon flights and not evening flights. We have waited as long as 6 hours from arrival. I guess the rule is within 4 hours of check in. Anyway since the carousel and DME are not that far apart we do not use the tags and bring the luggage with us on the bus. If your room is not ready bell services will hold your bag. MCO seems to be slow spitting out luggage but we are on vacation and we are talking minutes. Obviously it is a personal choice and it is a nice perk but it is not that big a hassle anymore to wait for them and bring them with you. The nice thing is that if you want something you have it with you.

What I said above pertains to Air Canada. I am not sure where the West Jet baggage claim is. It may be in the same area. I just have not noticed. Living in N.B. it is hard to use anything other than A.C. and when going to MCO it is usually an aeroplan ticket.

That's good to know since we will be flying on Air Canada. I've never set foot in MCO so I have no idea how its laid out. But I was leaning towards getting our bags anyway.... If our luggage is lost, I'd rather know when we land vs hours later :)

We usually go carry on only nowadays, but I do believe the CM checking you onto DME does ask how many bags you have with the yellow tags so I don't think misdirected bags will go undetected for too long. Just my guess.

With me, my wife and daughter, a "carry on only" vacation is not likely ;-) *I* could probably get by with just a carry on for 10 days though. ;-)

I hear ya! I should clarify, when DW and I go carry on only, we go for 7 nights and will always do some laundry mid-week to freshen our wardrobe up. By then we usually need some resort time, anyway. Mind you, I never need shirts washed, between the ones I bring and the t shirts I buy there, I never run out...:rolleyes1

The PPs are absolutely on the money. Flying out of Toronto, you are good to go with your Disney luggage tags given your early pre-noon arrival time. But coming back, your Disney resort cannot do resort check-in and handle your checked bags for you if you are flying Air Canada or Westjet as they are not on the approved list. Definitely check to see if they are added later this year but its unlikely. What I do is 1) the night before my return flight, I go to front desk and ask them to do my online check-in for me & print out my boarding pass (within 24 hrs of the flight). I bring a photocopy of my passport with me so they can enter the info for me. 2) Magical Express will hang an documents envelope from your doorknob on your room the day before your check-out and this will have your bus pick-up time printed on it. Because its an international flight, your pick-up time in front of your resort will be at least 4 hrs before your flight. You need to be at the Magical Express pick-up spot in front of your resort at least 15 mins before your printed pick-up time. This is important. The bus will not wait for you. You need to bring all of your own checked bags with you. The driver will store them in the basement of the bus. He will drive you to the airport and drop you off at Ground Transportation. There is an elevator immediately inside the sliding doors that you get on & take up to the next level. If front desk has already done check-in for you & you have your boarding pass, then go straight to security. First check the boards to find your Gate number as your boarding pass usually does not have this information. Enjoy your vacation! ps it isn't as hard or nasty as it sounds. I usually have to do this at 1 or 2am because inevitably I book myself on a 7am flight back to T.O. MCO uses a monorail to transport passengers to & from the main terminal. Just follow the crowd. Because American Homeland Security is set up in T.O., you don't have to deal with passport control or anything else once you land in Orlando. No worries! If you have any questions, just post below.
