DME-conflicting info

Hi there..hope someone can help here..read the stickied threads but could not find my answer.

I have not used DME..a co-worker is going and has asked me to help her clarify this.

She rec'd a email from Disney that had links to her vacation reserveration, planning etc..you know the one we get right. So she clicked on the link for DME and was concerned about this bit of info on the webpage:

Upon landing at Orlando International Airport, claim your baggage at baggage claim and proceed to the Disney's Magical Express Welcome Center in the Main Terminal Building, B side, Level 1. Disney's Magical Express service will deliver it directly to your Walt Disney World hotel room within 3 hours after you check in at the resort. Luggage delivery service provided by Disney's Magical Express is available for flights arriving between 5:00 am and 10:00 pm daily. For airport arrivals after 10:00 pm, Guests may collect their luggage at Baggage Claim and transport it with them on the motorcoach.

She was under the impression that because she had been sent yellow luggage tags that she could by-pass picking up her luggage--that she could skip baggage claim and go straight to catch the DME bus.

So she called and asked the CM told her that she can skip the baggage claim, she won't need to pick up and bring her luggage with her..that disney will handle all the transport of her luggage.

So which information should she go by?

If it makes any difference she is flying Delta from Canada, will clear customs in Canada and arrives before supper time.

I can't imagine why it says that. One of the biggest ME perks is that they bring your bags to your room and you never have to touch them after your home airport. Provided you use the tags. That's definitely some kind of error I would say. I don't recall anyone ever posting that before.

Afterthought: I didn't think it was different for Canadians. Maybe it is due to Customs?

Being an infrequent (like almost never) international traveler, I don't see how you could clear customs IN Canada when you're traveling from Canada. Don't you have to clear customs in the US, as is described in the PP's quote. So if you went to another US location first, then you would be good to go, but if not, you have to get your own bags?

So just a question - as I said, I have no personal knowledge. I only know about going to Canada in the car!

Many guests traveling from Canada to the US will clear customs when boarding their first flight, in Canada.

If you need to clear or reclear customs in Orlando, you will do so before taking the tram to the main terminal. In the customs station you have the choice of putting your bags on the other conveyor belt for automagical delivery to your resort room, or carrying the bags right out of the customs station and onto the airport tram and down to the Magical Express welcoming area.

Guests who step off the plane in Orlando after 10 PM need to collect their bags at the carousels in the main terminal. For international guests who put the bags on the other conveyor belt before leaving the customs station, the bags will end up at the carousels.

I have flown to the USA many times from Wpg..and I have always cleared customs here. Why it is set up that way..I have no idea..but it is and I like it because it usually is not all that busy.


Thanks for the info..I have passed it on and she feels more confident now that she got the right advice from you guys and the cm she spoke to. As for the weblink from the email they sent her--that is not good being so confusing like that!

She was likely sent the standard language for an international flight, even though procedures from Canada might be different. Disney is not good at pointing up possible deviations from their usual procedure.

I think it proves that you need to check official government sites for official info and not rely on trying to interpret the basic policy third hand.

Canada's cool like that. They do it with Amtrak, too, at least leaving from Vancouver.

I'm thirding the fact that she doesn't have to pick up her luggage, since she pre-clears custom in Winnipeg. Most Canadian airports have US pre-clearance (that's a US requirement, not a Canadian thing), and some other International airports also have that pre-clearance (Dublin for example).

Disney indeed has issues about categorizing Canada, on the way in, you really are just like any other US traveller. On the way out however, you are an international one. Your friend won't be able to do RAC (Resort Airline Check-in), since her flight destination is not in the US. ME will also pick her up 4 hours before the flight, not 3.
