DLR to Have More Rides than WDW Once Cars Land Opens

Rather than debate what makes a ride, why not make two lists -- pure rides where you have to be in motion... and shows/experiences where you are not (regardless of slight movements in the seats, 4D effects, etc)?

Might make for a better basis for comparison anyway since some people like rides and not shows... while others don't do many rides but love the shows...

Just a suggestion...

OK, good idea. Let me work on that. I think it is still a blurry line though. Again, are Main Street vehicles and horse-pulled train cars rides? To me Tiki Room (a show) is more of a ride than the double-decker bus on Main Street.

What do you all think?

IMO the Tiki Room is a show rather than a ride.

Main Street vehicles I suppose would be a ride if they had to be put into a category, but obviously not the same "quality" of ride as one that takes you through an attraction.

As an another option, you could make one list of "rides" for traditional rides and make the other list "everything else" or "other attractions." In that case, I'd put both the Tiki Room and the Main Street vehicles into the "everything else" category.

But that's just me...

Yup.

I think the main idea is for WDW vets who think that because DLR has only 2 parks, there's significantly less to do. Wrong!

But FWIW, I would count the Tiki Room, Monorail, Voyage of the Little Mermaid, Disney Animation (at both resorts), Captain EO, Sum of All Thrills, and the Hall of Presidents (for that matter) as "rides", but not Mickey/Minnie's houses or Innoventions. Just throwing out my 2 cents. Complicate the issue a little more.

Great list HydoGuy! And as for Innoventions I hope it is not listed at all as I hope it's closed down after Carsland opens to make space for something worth seeing/doing. What a huge waste of space that is.

I agree, but I remember it has saved us from the heat numerous times.

Ahhh...but you left out the "attractions" at Blizzard Beach, Typhoon Lagoon and DisneyQuest!!

And the rentable watercraft and hang-gliding and balloon ride!

And not only would I consider the monorail at WDW a ride, my niece considers the parking lot tram and busses from hotels to be rides as well!

I think the distinction between ride and show (and anything else) is difficult enough that for any kind of count I would use the list of "attractions" as Disney presents it on their maps and web pages (since as someone pointed out, some people go as much for the shows as for the rides).

I understand in the WDW vs. DLR arguments, there is a certain amount of "Size Matters" that always goes on. But IMO, it's apples and oranges. Maybe comparing MK to DL make sense (only because MK was based on DL) and I can see comparing individual attractions between the two coasts. But the resorts themsleves are different creatures with different histories. Just enjoy each of them for what they are...everyone will have their favorite for their personal reasons.

NYTimez had a good idea to come up with a more formal ride count to reduce ambiguity. I considered a formal ride to be something where there was a ride mechanism which involved motion of some kind.

Below is a count of formal rides. It indicates DLR has 49 formal rides while WDW has 45. With the three new rides at DCA DLR will have 52. When WDW gets done with the New Fantasyland in 2013 (?) they will have 47.

This type of count I think is fair but would still like your thoughts. It shows DLR's two parks have more formal rides than WDW's four parks.

There are still some I think are a little ambiguous - at WDW. Stitch's Great Escape. Is that a ride? You do not move. You just sit. So maybe it isn't. I included it. Sum of All Thrills moves you. A lot! But it is part of Innoventions. I included SOAT but not Innoventions. How about Backlot Tour at DHS? I counted it as a ride mostly because of Catastrophe Canyon. Otherwise I think it is more of a tour than a ride.

In a later post I will try to sum up some of the non-ride attractions, and I expect WDW will come out way ahead of DLR on those.

You know, DQ should be mentioned somewhere. BB and TL do not have rides that I can think of in the sense we are discussing here. But DQ does.

I think that the Backlot Tour could be compared to The Storybookland Canal. So it should be counted as a ride. (Although it desperately needs to be updating or replacement.)
