DLR to Have More Rides than WDW Once Cars Land Opens

Note, due to debate I made a more formal list of true rides and posted it in post #29 in this thread here: http://www.disboards.com/showpost.php?p=43949511&postcount=29

At Disney parks it can be somewhat ambiguous what is really a ride and what is not. For example, is the double-decker bus on Main Street a ride? I would not count it as a ride. Is Tarzan's Treehouse at DL or Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse at MK a ride? I would say so.

With that caveat, by my count DLR will have 64 rides once Cars Land opens and WDW will have 63.

This is temporary. When the New Fantasyland opens at MK then they will get three more rides but lose one. Little Mermaid is rumored to open later in 2012. An updated version of Goofy's Barnstormer is rumored to open in later in 2012. And the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is rumored to open in 2013. But this will mean the closing of the Snow White ride.

Which would leave WDW just one more ride than DLR: 65 vs. 64.

I am not an expert but I have read before that Barnstormer will come back re-themed. I found this article which says it will:

Awesome! I hadn't paid too much attention to the expansion since our trip was last fall. I hadn't heard about the retheming.

You counted "Disney Animation" at DCA, but not at DHS?

Also, what makes "Voyage of the Little Mermaid" a ride, and not any of the other shows?

I'm surprised Captain EO counts as a ride, but not, say, the O Canada or Reflections of China films at Epcot. (Not that I have SEEN any of those films, but are they ruled out because they're educational? I definitely would have counted Circlevision as a ride when it was in DL.)

I'm shocked that DCA has very nearly as many rides as MK! Interesting count at any rate.

I think one of the underlying problems with doing a comparison like this is, what makes a ride a ride? This is one of the reasons Disney uses the term attraction instead, it's all encompassing.

The list can be debated, but it seems Animation at DHS is more a tour and not really like Animation at DCA. But you are right, is Animation at DCA a ride?

VLM is much like Its Tough To Be a Bug. Are those rides or shows? And then there are Muppets. Ride or Show? Is anything with a screen not a ride? Soarin? Or do the seats have to move to be a ride? Like Soarin?

But Captain Eo's seats move at DL. A little. So is it a ride?

When I created the list originally I used RideMax's list of rides as a guide.

Yah, but DLR also lists ElecTRONica and Blue Sky Cellar as attractions - which I am sure we can agree are not rides. Where do you draw the line? I agree it is hard to draw a line on rides vs. shows vs. tours vs. displays vs. rec areas such as Redwood Creek Challenge. I tried to draw some here but agree it can all be debated.

Yep, as I said in a PP should you count something with merely a screen as a ride? Hard to say. What about something with live performers like Disney Playhouse?

IMO Captain Eo is more like a ride as it is not purely a movie like Oh Canada.

Is Abe Lincoln at DL a ride? It has an animatronic figure. To me it seems more like a ride than not. But it is debatable.

Oh, I also obviously counted Mickey's House and Minnie's House in DL's TT. Are those rides or merely meet & greets? Since they have themed walk through areas which are interactive I thought they were closer to a ride than not. Along the lines of say Tarzan's Treehouse. But maybe they should not be counted either.

I could see the films in China, France and Canada as attractions. As well as the stunt shows and animation tour at the Studios.

What about the live shows like Beauty and the Beast, Festival of the Lion King, Finding Nemo and Flights of Wonder?

Yes, but if we are trying to talk about rides does anyone really think documentary films like O Canada and other Epcot shows are really rides?

Then you get things like the elaborate Indiana Jones Stunt show at DHS. Not really a ride. Definitely an attraction. I did not include it as a ride. Hard to say, isn't it?

To me Innoventions is not a ride but a display. So I did not count it as a ride at either DLR or WDW. But Innoventions at WDW has a motion simulator (Sum of All Thrills?) which seems way more like a ride than say Tarzan's Treehouse. Should WDW Innoventions be included as a ride because it has SOAT inside? Maybe.

On a related note, I included Monorail as a ride at DLR but not WDW. That was a judgement call, but for anyone who has ridden both I think you would agree Monorail functions more like a ride at DL and more like pure transportation at WDW.

Ooops I forgot to change Honey I Shrunk the Audience to Eo at Epcot but I did change it at DL. You are right, but Epcot Eo was already counted as HISTA. I will change the OP to reflect this.

Rather than debate what makes a ride, why not make two lists -- pure rides where you have to be in motion... and shows/experiences where you are not (regardless of slight movements in the seats, 4D effects, etc)?

Might make for a better basis for comparison anyway since some people like rides and not shows... while others don't do many rides but love the shows...

Great list HydoGuy! And as for Innoventions I hope it is not listed at all as I hope it's closed down after Carsland opens to make space for something worth seeing/doing. What a huge waste of space that is.
