Just a few observations from our first time trip to DL. Let me preface this by saying that I know this was not a typical visit as we were there during some of the torrential rains and cold weather. But, we did have some thoughts and I wanted to share things we noticed. We had one day in DL and one day in CA. In no particular order, here we go.

~~I thought I was prepared, had been warned by many, but I have to say that the darn castle is small--it is beautiful--but it is small and appears as if it was just squashed to the ground. The few times the sun did shine, the gold on the spires made it really, really shine and sparkle. But I have to say, Cinderella really got the better end of the deal in the castle department.

~~The DL Cast Members are far friendlier, in my opinion, than those at WDW. I wore my birthday button, and I got a Happy Birthday from almost every CM we encountered. And any time we asked a question, we got a smile and helpful information, over and above what we asked.

~~Tickets appeared to be available only at the Parks. We were not asked at check-in either at the Grand Californian or at the DL Hotel if we needed tickets. Maybe you can get them at Guest Services at the hotel, but that was never mentioned.

~~Villas at the Grand Californian, simply beautiful, like a more stately Wilderness Lodge. We do not care for the WL rooms at all, but we loved Grand Californian. They are larger, beautiful mission-style furniture, loved the fabrics, loved the accessories--nice metal ice bucket and hammered tray on the wet bar area. Robes in the closet.

The lobby area for the Villas is non-existant. You walk from the hotel, outside, thru some doors to the elevators. If there is a lobby area for the villas, we just never found it.

~~They don't know how to make biscuits out there. We ate breakfast at White Water snacks and then the next day we had breakfast at Storyteller's and the biscuits were absolutely tasteless and hard like hockey pucks--just awful. Of course, I understand they are just learning about sweet tea there, so maybe in a few more years they will know what a real biscuit is. Wonder if all of Cali is like that, or jut DL?

~~Because it was raining really hard, a lot of stuff was shut down, including the monorail. No food kiosk's were open, no Dole pineapple whip, no churros, no popcorn, no Mickey bars, nothing. :sad2: So, when it came time for some lunch, it was very difficult to find anything at all. There are like two sit-down places to eat and that is all, the Plaza, not like the one at WDW, and the Blue Bayou. Food options are not nearly as plentiful at DL as they are at WDW. We ended up eating at the Plaza, and it did not open until Noon. I am sure the rain had a lot to do with it, but the lack of food options really surprised me.

~~DL and California Adventure are easier to do than WDW. Once you get there, you are there, no major decisions on transportation on how to get somewhere else. You do not waste a lot of your day getting from one Park to another.

~~The monorail is not a major form of transportation. You can board at Downtown Disney, and it drops you off near the Nemo submarines, but when you board, that is your entry into DL, and you have to already have your ticket to board. I did not see anywhere you could buy a ticket in that area. The new monorail cars are very, very cool, and look as futuristic as they should. The monorail makes a couple of steep banked curves, which I did not expect and enjoyed. We saw people riding in the front car and the back car of the monorail. The ride from DTD to DL is far more interesting that from DL back to DTD.

~~So much stuff was closed for rehab, which we expected, but the construction barriers at both DL and CA made for some tight pathways and made it hard for us to find our way around at times.

~~Que lines are much narrower for the original attractions. Small enough to make you literally single file. Not a problem, just a surprise. The most noticeable to me was Peter Pan, which is better at DL, imho.

~~Hand sanitizers set up in many locations at the entrances to the parks and some in the parks. I did not see any of these our last trip to WDW in September, but maybe they are in the process of being installed.

~~You can see Tower of Terror from DL, and you can see the train station from CA. Can't say that I liked being able to do that, but maybe it was just a surprise to me.

~~Rain is definitely an issue out there. It has no where to go, no huge drains, etc., and the Cast Members were out with huge brooms, pushing the water off the streets into the small drains they do have. Rain to them is like snow in our area--it shuts them down.

~~WOD is the only option for Disney merchandise in DTD. At WDW, it is nice to have the Christmas store, the kitchen store, Goofys Candy Company and the Art of Disney, among others to find specific merchandise. It was surprising to see stores such as Sephora in DTD.

~~I was surprised that there was no Ghiradelli at DTD--not that the stores should be the same as at WDW, but since Ghiradelli originates in CA, I was just sort of expecting one.

That's all for now. I need to look back over my pictures to jog my memory of things we noticed.

Because of the rain, etc., we did not see any parades or any fireworks. That just leaves more for me to do when I go back in May.

My biggest suggestion is to stay at the Grand Californian, if convenience matters to you. It is by far the closest to all of the action, DTD and the Parks. DL Hotel is a little further, and Paradise Pier even a little farther distance. Off-site is fine, I am sure, but for my first trip, I wouldn't want to do that, but that is just me.

I enjoyed your observations. To address a few things you seemingly had questions about:

- Nope, you can't buy tickets where you board the monorail outside DL. If you already have admission, you can enter the Park that way, but if you need to purchase admission, they do not sell that there.

- Yes, you can buy tickets at the hotels. When we stayed at the GCH last year, we were able to buy tickets at the front desk. We asked, it was not a suggestive sell.

- There are more dining options at DLR than the 2 you mentioned, but with the rain, things are different. :( Now, there is nowhere near as many options as WDW, but again, it's smaller, more compact, and doesn't need as many options.

- Ah, the castles. When we went to WDW (knowing full-well that Cinderella's was MUCH bigger, we could not get over just how much bigger it was! We kept saying, "It's just too big. It doesn't need to be that big. It's gorgeous, but SB's is more magical, etc....." I think, in the end, it's what you are used to. They are both beautiful in their own way, but if you are used to one, the other certainly seems "off" for whatever reasons.

Regarding the dining--we had heard so much about Carnation Cafe' and we really wanted to try it. I was not aware that all seating for Carnation was outside, so when it rains, it shuts down. While trying to find Carnation Cafe', we stopped in to the Coffee Shop and asked a CM where it was. He said it was just outside the door, but it was closed due to rain, and then he told us that our options that day were the Plaza and Blue Bayou. So, if there was more than those two open that day, we wish we would have known what it was. I am sure there are many counter service options when the weather is not a factor, and I am sorry we didn't get the chance to check some of them out.

The castle--I agree with your evaluation there--just a matter of what you are used to, but I was still shocked at the size, even after being told by many, many people how small it would seem to me. I guess the larger castle at WDW makes it easier to find the center of the park from the different lands. I do think that Sleeping Beauty's castle is prettier.

Great observations! As a fellow WDW-veteran who just got back from DL (in the rain; Jan 16-18) I really enjoyed reading your post.

I totally agree about the food options being fewer than WDW...and I was surprised at the lack of indoor dining. (If it hadn't been raining, it wouldn't have been as noticable.) It also seemed that the food service was not as efficient as at WDW...where counter service always seems to move like a well-oiled machine. At DL and DCA the lines for food were long and moved slow, and the preparation took forever. Not a huge deal - just surprising.

Nobody makes biscuits like southerners!

Also - I love that Downtown Disney is right there within walking distance to the parks. We enjoyed the chili bread bowl at La Bria and had a pretty good breakfast at the Jazz Kitchen. However, Downtown Disney at WDW has more to offer as far as Disney specialty stores. Sure, the both have World of Disney, but DTD at WDW has the Disney Kitchen Store and the Disney Pet Store and Goofy's Kitchen, the Christmas Store and Art of Disney, etc. Again, not a big deal....just a difference.

There are many counter service places that would be open in the rain, you must have ask for restaurants? Every land has 1 or 2 counter service places. Before your next trip get a Disney Guide Book from the library.

I just checked Disneyland.com here are the eating places

Also on Harbor there is a McDonalds, and Mimi's[for your biscuits].

I stay in the Desert Inn and Suites On Harbor and I'm closer than any of the Disney hotels, plus I spend a 1/3 on the Hotel with continental breakfast. I buy DL passes at AAA on sale. Golden Horseshoe Stage and the show there is our favorite!!

Loved your observations. And as far as I know biscuits ARE hockey pucks ~ are you telling me they are really supposed to be edible??:rotfl:

As far as the narrow ques, remember Disneyland was built before ADA requirements and compliance, they newer attractions have wider ques, the older attractions usually have a special boarding place at the exit of the attraction for those who need special accomodations. I guess it's a bit jarring coming from the WDW parks who had those ADA requirements in place before construction started.

BTW, I love the Disneyland smaller castle, it shines so brightly because (as I've been told numerous times by the Tour Guides) it is real gold on those spires. I do wish it was large enough to accomodate a restaurant or room suite like WDW's, but I still enjoy the charm of Sleeping Beauty's castle.

I'm so glad you had a nice time even through the rain. That weather was a total anomoly! It never rains in Southern California .. well at least not usually that much for that long!

Thanks for the reminder. I had noticed that too and plan to add it to my original post. I too loved having DTD so close and the fact that you don't have to make a "trip on a bus" or drive around for ever looking for a parking spot, like at WDW. At DL, you can walk from Hotel to DTD to the Parks. :goodvibes

Yes, you are right, I think I mentioned above that we were looking for sit-down, meaning table service places to eat. We needed to be dry for a little bit and to not be standing in the water. I had Park Guides and could see all of the counter places, but sitting outside was not an option with the downpour we were having that day. Golden Horseshoe, among many, many other things was closed that day.

Oh yes, biscuits, when prepared properly can be an absolutely wonderful experiene. A hot fluffy biscuit with some butter and maybe some honey is absolutely delicious and tummy warming. :cloud9: Don't you guys have Bojangles out there?

I, too, had read that there is 24K gold on the castle spires, and the sun came out for a few minutes, and it did glisten.

We did have a nice time, and the fact that there were so few people there meant that most everything was a walk-on, except for Indy, which we didn't find until late afternoon.

I hope everyone understands that I am not trying to be critical of DL, just pointing out things that caught me off guard and things that were different than what I am used to at WDW, which I visit 3-4 times a year. With my son now living in OC, I imagine I will have more trips to DL each year than I will to WDW, something I never thought would would be the case.

You will walk in and say "it's the same, but different." When you walk under the train station and round the bend, you will notice that there is no "forced perspective" looking down either direction of Main Street. There is enough similar that when you get to the end of Main Street, you will want to know where Casey's is, and then when you pass thru the castle and look to the left, you can't find Mickey's Philharmagic. It is so strange to have so much make you feel that you are in the MK, and then things are just not like you left them. :confused3 It is also hard to get used to not knowing just where everything is. :confused3 On the flip side, if you go to WDW as often as we do, it is nice to have a change.

Thank you for your insight, sometimes its nice to see what others think of DL. And one of my favorite parts of DL is how nice everyone seems to be, in fact we have a "favorite" cast member that we go see everytime were there with the exception of our Sept trip, she was working at the D23 convention :-( boohoo!

Great observations RweTHEREyet!

Totally agree with food choices at DL. The food is not nearly as good as WDW.

I'm sad that you didn't get to see Remember Dreams Come True fireworks. It's absolutely the best show bar none. When you go back in May you hopefully will get to see it, the World of Color, and Fantasmic! which is also much better than WDW.

Fantasyland is so much better at DL. It seems there are more rides in Fantasyland DL than all of magic kingdom in WDW. (Alice, Matterhorn, Peter, Snow WHite, Pinocchio, Toad's Wild, Dumbo, IASM, Casey JR, Storybook Land, and Teacups).

What did you think of Pirates?
What about Aladdin show at DCA?
What about Space Mtn or Indy Jones?

Mike

Really enjoyed reading about your trip, especially since we are taking our first trip to DL after many to WDW.

I am rolling with laughter about your reference to the biscuits and sweet tea. Being from the South I am appreciative of both of them. I'm not sure WDW has got either of them right. They definitely don't have sweet tea.

We are also looking for good eats when we visit DL. This is an important part of traveling for me. I think we will try out the Blue Bayou since it gets such good reviews.

I have contrary opinions about food at WDW and DL. I Much prefer the food at DLR, because of their variety of good CS restaurants, and a focus on alfresco dining. Very little of the CS food at WDW is fresh and tasty, while I find that to be the norm at DLR.

this is a general comment, I understand the poor OP didn't have a chance to sample and see!

I am glad you will have an opportunity to return in May!

In my lowly, humble opinion:

Pirates at DL wins, hands down :goodvibes
Even though Aladdin was listed on the Times Guide, the sign on the marquee said no shows for that day
I am a wienie and don't ride Space
Totally loved Indiana Jones--it was just too short
Peter Pan is better at DL also, not sure why, but it seemed to be.
Animation in CA is better than WDW also
Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln is not nearly as good as American Adventure in EPCOT

Sorry about the rain. I heard that Anaheim residents don't even own umbrellas. Maybe some locals can confirm that.

Love to read WDW pro's opinions! But...

Facades in DL are much more detailed and realistic than WDW because of the hurricanes. For example, Fantasyland has gorgeous facades that make you feel like you are in a German village. Small World is unbelievable at night, whereas the WDW facade is not as interesting.

But that is all due to climate and weather. As you said, DL is not prepared for the rain as evident in all the puddles and wet clothes I read about.

Despite it all, I'm glad you enjoyed yourself. DVC rocks!
