Hello! I have gone to disney world 5 times since I was little. and Now I am thinking I would like to visit Disney Land.

Any help you could give me would be great.

Let me give you some background info.

I am 21, I have no kids. I just love disney. This disneyland trip will be my mom & I. I usualy book right through disney. I enjoy going to Disneyworld in Oct because it has lower crowds and not so hot.

What would be a similar time to go to DL?

Does DL ever offer discounts like DW does? Like free dining?

I am thinking of staying at the disney land hotel. Can you tell me about?

BASICALLY just tell me anything you think might be helpful for a disney land newbie!!!

Thanks so much :)))

As someone who has gone to WDW many times, all for long stays, I can tell you that my first trip last year to DL was very eye-opening. The people are simply more rude at DL than at WDW. You can disagree, but I saw many, many examples of this in just three days there.

When we first arrived at DL I needed to turn in my vouchers for tickets. The ticket booth lady mentioned to me that she was from the same city (in WI) as my wife and even went to the same high school. I turned and said to my wife, who was about 15 ft away, that this lady went to her high school and was immediately mocked by a couple passing by her.

While in DL the CA closed and everyone from there rushed over to DL. I was standing next to a street lamp with my wife figuring out what to do next when a lady with a stroller ran a wheel into my foot over and over again until I looked down to see what was hitting me. I looked up at her and she just stared me in the eye and kept ramming her stroller into my foot until I moved.

While standing in a very long line for the Toy Story ride a lady with her 3 kids simply stepped right in front of my family in line. My wife told her this wasn't the end of the line and she replied, "if I walk to the end of the line the line will just keep getting longer while I'm walking there," like this was some kind of justification. After a few akward moments she finally angrily left the line to go to the end.

Worst of all, we were in the roped off handicapped section of the parade route (my mother-in-law was in a wheelchair) and an old man pushing his elderly wife yelled at a couple and their daughter in a stroller (who was bald and obviously had cancer) to get out of the handicapped area. They explained their daughter's condition but the cranky old man literally chased them out of that section.

I can tell you that I have not experienced one thing remotely as bad as these things in all my years of going to WDW. It's just a different, much less friendly, place.

Don't hold back Jim.....tell the nice girl who is looking forward to visiting Walt's Park what you really think. ;)

:rotfl:

JennyLynn, I'm a WDW veteran (5 times) who loves & much prefers DLR. Lots of great things to enjoy & experience at WDW AND DLR.

Check out the Sticky's & what BlackJack linked (& then read the rest of HydroGuy's tip threads). Then post back here with specific questions. Plan on 4-5 days to see & do Walt's Park (& DCA) right.

If price is an issue (& you can't stay on site), then no problem...... stay at one of the 8-10 hotels across the street on Harbor Blvd. (a 5 -7 min. walk & yes they are safe). Let me repeat......stay on-site or on Harbor Blvd.

& remember:

- No riding on buses.
- No standing in line for buses.
- No humidity.
- No free food.
- The castle is the RIGHT size (but you won't see it from the gate....so don't bother looking).
- But Lots & Lots of Magic to be found.

Have a great time planning a visit to Walt's Park. :thumbsup2

:)

Wow Jim had a crazy bad experience!

There are rude people wherever you go. I don't think it's exclusive to DL.

Hound's right, no need to stay 'onsite' at DL. The walking distance for a good share of them is pretty short. I'd check the stickies thread that Jack posted..I believe there's a map of the hotels in there. If you can't find one, message me..I'll find it again for you :)

If you do a bit of searching, people have posted pics of the Disneyland Hotel..some of the towers have been redone and are GORGEOUS! I choose not to stay on site because of price but I'd totally stay there if I did!!

You can get tickets either with your package through disney if you do on site..or just through disney. You can get them from GetAwayToday.com which is a great site (I believe they are a touch cheaper, but don't quote me).

I have not been to DisneyWorld, so take that into account but I LOVE Disneyland. It's charming and everything is close. park hopping is not as dramatic as it is at DisneyWorld (Or so I've been told)

Oh and..as for good 'time' to go..I believe there is a weather trend link in that sticky Jack posted too. We've gone in April and it was rainy. We've gone in April and it was hot. We've gone in December and it was BEAUTIFUL. There's not really humidity to speak of so even when it's HOT hot..it's not like FL.

There are rude people where ever you go, but Disneyland also had some incredibly nice people as well.

-One lady stole our table at the food court in DCA and another small family saw it and offered to share their table with us.

-Waiting in lines didn't seem so bad when you were able to chit-chat with your neighbors about your trip and ride experiences.

-Oscar the chef at Carnation Cafe is a real dear and came to chat with us while eating lunch.

-Sharing taffy/popcorn with other guest while taking the Grand Circle Tour.

-Pin trading with children half my age and many times my pin trading experience.

The only bad experiences I had were from families with strollers in a hurry to get somewhere.

I completely agree with that.

Like mentioned, there are rude people everywhere you go! And a lot of rude people I've seen at Disneyland also happened to be people that didn't speak English. Yes, there are impatient people who will run you over with their stroller because they are not paying attention. That happens. I have been many, many times and have never had anyone be personally rude to me.

Dining plan, not worth it. At all. You'd be better to pay out of pocket for food.

There are tons of hotels (Good Neighbor hotels) in walking distance to DLR. It's really nice!

Go to Disneyland.com and check out all the rides that have Fast Passes.

Yes, Jim had a crazy bad experience. I feel for him, I really do. But now he has felt the need to be the Grinch and post exactly the same comments on several threads.

Jim, I hope you get over it soon, friend. It's not good for your blood pressure to keep carrying that stuff around. pixiedust:

-Bob

I posted my experience in two threads yesterday. I didn't know that two qualified as "several," so I don't get the Grinch comment. And I really don't understand stooping to making personal comments about people on this, of all, discussion boards.

Look, all I can do is tell what my experience was. In 14 trips to WDW I've never seen anything remotely close to this type of rudeness. I'm not making it up or exaggerating, I'm just reporting what happened to us and others that we saw. I would think people in these discussions would appreciate others sharing their experiences without making comments at them.

I'm going back to DL next week and we'll see what happens. I'm being cautiously optimistic.

Read some of the stories some handicapped people wrote in the "People AMAZE me" thread (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2738860).

Dude, Jim..I'm sorry your time sucked. I posted in that thread and had a bad experience too..but I wouldn't tell someone who is excited about going that it's probably gonna be an awful time. Nor would I specifically point them to a thread where people all posted their complaints. It's a thread where people gathered just to do that. Why don't you point her to a thread with all the GREAT things that happened instead?:wizard::thumbsup2

With all due respect I completely disagree. First, she did not say she was going to DL, she said she was thinking about it and asked for anything that might be helpful.

Second, I NEVER said it was probably going to be an awful time for her. I simply relayed my experiences and pointed out a thread that was an alternative to what others had posted. There are many posts in the thread that was suggested to her earlier that have negative views of many elements of WDW so what is the problem with me pointing out another set of viewpoints?

We're adults, we have the ability to take in different peoples' opinions and weigh them accordingly. So why the insistance that my experiences be silenced or watered down?

And should she be scared away from DL because of what happened to me or the others I pointed her to? No. In fact, I stated that I, myself, will be going again next week. If that experience is great I will say so. If not, I will say that too.

People need to allow for dissenting opinions once in a while...

I am not the most positive person in the world mostly due to job related experiences, I have been going since 1955 and have never experienced what you have in that one trip. I have never been to WDW so I can not relate to what that park is like(my family at present will not go) hey think it is a large knock off of something Walt had really nothing to do with.
But we do get a number of WDW vets who will come on here and trash Disneyland and sometimes it is taken negatively by the DLR vets.
Negativity grows like cancer on these boards and scares people away, being a shareholder in Disney I wish everyone could have a wonderful experience but it will NEVER happen because many people go into the experience with unreal expectations, just look what is going on about the ride change rumors.
A few years back I cold conked a drunk with a big mouth in the middle of the park, had to talk to both security and Anaheim PD, really not a wonderful expereine, last year my daugther was hit by a stroller nazi and we she had to get stitches, I post it on a daily blog while I am there but I sure do not go about making a big deal out of it.
When I read your post it really sounded like another WDW troll to me, so I really do hope you enjoy your next visit. Sorry if this does not make sense I am writing from an iPhone.

Well, different folks have different experiences. I have been to WDW three times now and DLR lots more, plus DLR Paris once and Tokyo Disney Resort.

I have not seen any general difference between the guests or CMs between WDW and DLR - or at Disney Paris or Tokyo for that matter (well, maybe a little at Paris). In general the CMs are all awesome. If anyone generalizes that DLR is a more rude place than WDW I would say that it has somehow escaped my notice for the last 45 years.

I just spent the last three days at DLR and it was a great trip - as usual. Lots of friendly people and extremely friendly CMs. Not a single rude experience in three days - lots of cheery people having fun.

I would encourage the OP to keep reading and learning about DLR. DLR has lots of things about that exceed WDW IMO. Here is my list FWIW...

22. Areas Where DLR Exceeds WDW

Let me come out and say it right upfront - WDW has many things about it better than DLR. However, not everything about WDW is better than DLR and there are several areas where DLR exceeds WDW. That is what makes each resort special. Here is my list of areas where DLR exceeds WDW:

1. Weather - IMO the weather at DLR is better than WDW on average, and especially in the summer. Less rain and less humidity. See "Comparison of Weather For WDW and DLR" www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1711098

2. Ride concentration - One would think that WDW would have twice as many rides as DLR since it has twice as many parks. Nope. WDW has only 10% more rides. DLR has lots more rides packed into those little parks.

3. Entertainment - as of today DLR's top four shows are better than their counterparts at WDW. That would be World of Color, the Remember Dreams Come True fireworks/laser/special effects show (shown seasonally), Fantasmic and the Aladdin stage show

4. Accessibility - everything can be reached on foot and park hopping takes about 1 minute. The walking distance hotels makes for a different experience.

5. Longer park hours - along with #4 above makes it easier to spend more time in the parks.

6. Much less need for planning - for those accustomed to choosing parks and ADR's 6 months in advance you can forget about that. You can't make dining reservations until 2 months in advance and even then they are in much less demand than WDW. Even if you wait until a week before your trip many dining reservations are still available. And since it is so easy to parkhop there is no need to commit to parks on given days. Finally, if you stay at a walking distance hotel there is no need to plan for transportation.

7. Seasonal makeovers - Because DLR caters less to out-of-town vacationers they are more free to change their rides. So every year three rides get seasonal makeovers: From September-January Haunted Mansion is converted into "Haunted Mansion Holiday". From November-January It's A Small World is converted into "It's A Small World Holiday" and from September-October Space Mountain is converted into Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy. This keeps the parks more dynamic and interesting. This does require taking down the rides to install and remove the makeover elements.

8. Extended trip touring outside DLR - as discussed in the next section, there is a lot to do in California if you stay longer than DLR - natural, cultural, historical, entertainment, sports, etc. More of a variety and more interesting things than Florida. Fabulous National Parks such as Yosemite and Sequoia, within reach of the Grand Canyon in adjacent Arizona, accessible to Las Vegas, San Francisco, Lake Tahoe, Wine Country north of the Bay Area, Monterey, Big Sur coastline, and Death Valley. Then there is Hollywood and the entertainment industry, aviation history, a real Universal Studios that is not just a theme park, Spanish mission history, mountains and skiing, and whitewater rafting. The list goes on and on and on. Florida is not without opportunities outside WDW but the list is much shorter.

There are rude people wherever you go (people seem to HATE waiting line, even when it's for a Disney ride. It's not the DMV people!) but I've never experienced outright rudeness from fellow guests at Disneyland or WDW. My GF and I did feel like the CMs at WDW were sometimes treating us line second class citizens because we didn't have kids, but we've never had that happen at Disneyland. :)

I hope, for my own sake, that my first experience at DL was a huge anomaly and that when I go in a few days it will be a completely different experience. I will let you know when I get back on the 7th.

At least you have decided to return. We also wish you a great trip, looking forward to your report/impressions.

I hope so too. Glad to see you are giving it another shot. Be prepared for DCA to be a huge mess. They are doing LOTS of construction and all the walls really detract from DCA. Plus DCA has a lot of historical baggage of its own to overcome and the current construction mess does not help.

I can see where DCA is going and personally think they are going to right the ship once Cars Land is complete.

I was not sure from reading your post where you were coming from, but I encourage all WDW vets to embrace the DLR differences. For example, do not get so bogged down on the small castle that you miss the majestic Matterhorn. I know you have been before, but the idea is to be open to DLR's unique offerings and differences. It really does blow away WDW in certain areas - including July weather!

I also found on my first WDW trip that since I was new I had to rely much more on CMs there. At DLR I rarely have to do that because I know my way around. When I had to rely on WDW CMs I found out how many mistakes they make. I got tons of incorrect info at WDW and it was quite frustrating. I could have generalized that WDW CMs are less informed than DLR CMs or do not care to get their info right. What I concluded though was that it was not a fair comparison because I never rely on DLR CMs that way. After I learned my way around WDW and did not need to depend so much on the CMs there, they seemed comparable to DLR CMs. I suspect newbies at DLR encounter similar amounts of incorrect info from well meaning CMs who just get their facts mixed up.

When one talks about rudeness, it depends highly on when you are going. I have avoided times at WDW with the dreaded Brazilian teen groups and cheerleader groups. So I do not know those annoying groups first hand but have read how they detract from many people's trips. A first timer at WDW could incorrectly conclude that WDW is filled with annoaying teens (international or domestic) and decide DLR is better. But DLR has teen groups too. It just depends on when you go!

Have a magical trip! :wizard:

Thank you everybody for your helpful answers!! I looked into hydro's sticky and it was AMAZING! Thank you! :)

After looking into I think we will be staying at the Howard Johnson. Appreantly staying on site at DL is not comparable to staying on site at WDW. No free food but I'll survive. haha ;)

As far as 'rude people' go, Thank you for opinions. I however am a firm beleiver in life is what you make it. If I happen to run into a 'debbie downer' while I am on an awesome vacation, it never gets to me and it never will. That's just me. I am a hairdresser and meet em all and let me tell ya, after you peel the onion layers back, they might just be having a bad day. :)

Thanks for all the help disers. I can't wait till I can OFFICIALLY start my planning.
