Hi all DL veterans,
What kind of weather can we expect at insane o'clock AM when we line up for the race? Just wondering if I need to hit KMart for a couple of sets of disposable sweats.

Thanks in advance!

Donna

Donna: I can't speak for the first year of the race but last year and the year before it was not cool at the start. In fact two years ago I was breaking a sweat just standing there doing nothing. I would say not to worry about it. Maybe bring a trash bag in case of emergency.

not sure what it will be like in 3 weeks, but so far August has been really really pleasant here in SoCal. We're talkin low 60s in the AMs, which has been a godsend for my morning runs. As mentioned by the PP, its usually a lot hotter than that...

I'm actually a little worried that it will heat up again just in time for the race, because I won't be acclimated to the hot weather anymore. Pray to the weather gods for continued cool mornings! :worship:

I've got my fingers crossed for cooler weather too! In 2006 and 2008 it was really warm, and in 2007 it was dangerously hot (fortunately I missed that year). If I'm worried it might be a little chilly I cut an old t-shirt up the front and just wear that til the race starts.

2006 cool/pleasant
2007 HOTTER THAN HELL!
2008 warm

If you need disposable clothing, go to Goodwill or Salvation Army thrift shops. I've picked up sweat pants (nice I must add) for $3.00-$3.50 a pair, and toss them in the donation bins just before the start of the race.

The extended forecasts are predicting low 80s as a high for next week. But, the temps have begun to rise here in So Cal. Yesterday was supposed to be mid-80s and it hit low-90s in the valley. My long run this past Saturday started at 5:15 am and the temp was already 72 F. Luckily, it did not go up that much until well after I was done.

If this trend continues, I would plan for warm temps during the race. Just in case though, I am taking mkymsehi's advice and getting some throw away clothes from the Salvation Army.

Friends are reporting today's temps was 103, but also smoke from the fires in Rancho Palos Verde (out on the coast near San Pedro/Long Beach).

Current temp at 6:46 pm is 91 degrees.

Supposed to cool off next week according to forcasts.

I don't think the fires/smoke out there are affecting DL though.

I was just down there today and the temperature was 104 F when I left at 3:30. There was no sign of the smoke coming from the fires. However, I was able to see the huge plume as I drove home. Looks pretty nasty.

mkymsehi - I was just coming here to post this forecast. Looks like it is going to be a nice weekend for a race.

Here's the email sent out by Disney this morning: (everything is still ON!)

Recent news of fires in the Southern California mountains has caused an interest among runners who will be joining us this weekend for the Disneyland Half Marathon. At this time, we are moving forward with the Disneyland Half Marathon as planned. We continue to monitor the air quality situation with the Southern California Air Quality Management District (AQMD); the safety of our runners is our first priority. You can visit their Web site at http://www.aqmd.gov to keep updated on the current situation and forecasts for race day. The location of the fires is quite a distance from our resort, and the weather forecast indicates a week of cooler weather and favorable wind patterns, so we anticipate a safe and comfortable weekend of fun.

Of course, we will keep you posted should anything change, but for now get your shoes ready for the Happiest Race on Earth! See you real soon!

The link they noted didn't carry over...here it is: http://www.aqmd.gov/
(It's the same page we all have been following.)

Great, my home and office is going to be in Unhealthy tomorrow. Can't wait to get out of Dodge and into Anaheim on Friday.

My friend is at DL, and reports there is smoke in the air. No mention of how bad, but he said it's noticeable.

I so hope the weather predictions are these cooler temps. If it's anything like weather here there is no such thing as an accurate prediction. Ugh.

We are currently at DL and having a great time but hoping the weather changes. The smoke is not too bad, should not really be an issue, but the heat is another story-- I swear it hit 100 today, nice for a swim, but not a race...

Report from my friend Jay, who arrived on Monday.

Aloha! We have been in Disneyland since yesterday (Monday). Great time so far. Read the race warning on air quality. Air has been hazy so far, but I have not had any problems with the quality. Then again, I'm a midwesterner with clear skys! Not accustomed to the smog/haze. I did a 4 mile run around the DL property (outside the "big block") and didn't have issues other than dodging a few pedestrians on the way. It was hot though, probably 85F.
