Dizzyness after a cruise

Thanks to all of you for reassuring me. I just love this Board! Now I can sway around and not worry about it.

I was thinking of going to my doctor and seeing if I could get a prescription for cruise therapy. Since I feel so much better while I am on the Magic I thought I might be able to convince him that another cruise right away was important for my health. I am sure my health plan would be glad to pay for it!!

If the feeling lasts more than two weeks I would be visiting the doctor - you might have a condition that needs to be treated. For me the feeling lasts from 4 to 10 days. Who knows how long it will last after the repo trip. Fortunatly for me we will be spending a few days at WDW and I can ride Tower of Terror several time - for some reason it gives me an hour or two of relief from the "Land Legs" feeling.

We were on a 10 day cruise and the dizzyness lasted for about a week. Even before the cruise was over we would go on the islands and it would start. My husband and I always joked about not noticing the ship motion but thosed silly islands rock like crazy. My wobbling made my boss nervous at work because I would sway while I stood still. I didn't think anyone would notice but they kept telling me to sit down

Hi Mary!

I felt fine on Sat. after we got off of the ship but Sun-Tues I felt "land sick" Just kind of woozy if I was walking or standing. I was fine when I was sitting.
I never get sea sick and I felt great on the boat but every once in awhile for the first few days, I felt as though I was leaning or a little wobbly. It's gone now. The damage to my knee is still around but getting better! I think I would rather have the wooziness then the knee! Atleast that kind of felt like a roller-coaster!

My vote would be go on another cruise. I have cruised 16 times, and I never rock after a cruise. I did after the first couple of cruises but I guess I have cruised enough that it stopped. If it doesn't stop go see your doctor. Kathy

The problem you are describing is a real medical condition. It is known as Mal de Mer(sp?)--or sickness of the sea. I went to the dr and he told me that it can last several days or several months depending on the person. Sometimes the anti-dizzy meds will work--sometimes not. Unfortunately for me not. But I agree that cruise therapy is worth a try.

Has anyone ever experienced a feeling of persistent dizzyness after going on a cruise?

On my first cruise I used the scopolamine patch for motion sickness. Afterwards, I was sick with severe motion sickness for three days before going to the doctor. Turns out that is a side effect/withdrawl symptom of the patch! After not being sick on the ship, I spent a week on land in agony! Lesson learned - I don't use the patch any more.

Since I started this thread I thought I would share my experience as I guess it is somewhat of a cautionary tale.

Althought my swaying/rocking sensation seemed to subside after about a week, I continued to feel light headed and dizzy. I also started to feel increasingly unwell and experience other symptoms including fatigue, shortness of breath and night sweats. I kept pushing myself because Mom's can't get sick. We have too much to do. Yesterday I finally hit a wall. I left work early and came home and collapsed in bed. I felt chilled so I took my temperature and was shocked to discover I had a very high fever. Denial time was over and I had to admit that something was wrong. I called DH and he came right home and insisted I get medical attention. Since it was after hours at this point, I went to our urgent care and after a brief exam and chest x-ray, my doctor informed me that I have a bad case of pneumonia. They gave me a strong (and quite painful) antibiotic injection and then the doctor gave me a much-deserved "Scared Straight" lecture. He told me that without getting medical care I was probably a day or two away from the ICU, he reminded me about what happened to Jim Henson and he very sternly ordered me to stay on bed rest for a week, take all of my oral antibiotics and drink plenty of fluids. With that, he allowed me to go home, but only after I promised to be a good patient.

I just wanted to share this because I know I am not the only one does this type of thing. I pushed myself beyond my limits and jeopardized my health. I have definitely learned my lesson!
