Divas, Zebra Domes, and Pixie Dust! A Week in an African Paradise! New TR Link Pg.145

I do hope that Charles will be eating with you during the F&W or else you may have to extend your stay and tour with me!!!:rotfl:
Brown Derby looked really yummy....I went there a few years back but I can't remember what I had!! All I know is I am really hungry right now for some Cobb salad!!
I tried the recipe once for Jamba juice and it wasn't quite right! Although that might be because I concocted it in my kitchen rather than being served at Boma or Tusker House!:lmao:

Tracy

So glad you enjoyed your dinner at HBD. It's so great!!!

Sorry that Charles missed it.

Hmmmm I get the feeling the blunder has to do with KP.

You dinner sounded so good! I love Cobb salad too. YUM! I think I would like the Grapefruit Cake too.

I would have been rubbing it in all night that this was the best meal of the trip!

Can't wait to hear about your blunder.

Just caught up again--I'm so glad that you had a great meal--even tho' Charles was a no show!!
Loved Conner's green men and their pictures:goodvibes

I know you asked about where we were staying but I can't remember what page it was on -- we are staying at Pop again. :)

I'm glad that you had such a great meal even though Charles didn't show up. Each of the four of us is going to pick a place to eat in February and I'm really considering the Brown Derby now -- I love cobb salad and I'm dying to try theirs. And the grapefruit cake or the creme brulee. Gosh I can't wait till its time to make the ADRs. :rotfl:

Love the update:lovestruc

I can not believe Charles skipped out on dinner!! I had the same rotten luck with my in-laws if it makes you feel any better! We had dinner ADRs at Brown Derby...I was sooo excited (not to mention we had the Dining Plan and needed to use up the table services). We walked up to the restaurant and they said they just wanted to keep walking and find some food along the way b/c they were not hungry. About an hour of walking later---they were starving (of course!). Tried to WALK into Mamas and Sci Fi...(sigh) Ended up with a pizza at the Resort. What is it with the Brown Derby??

And I HATE snakes...I think you pretty much just talked me out of staying at the AKL...well, take that back. The Zebra Domes you talk about may make up for it;)

You must be a very patient person. If my husband had decided to skip dinner and leave me with two kids, it would not have been a nice thing to see. I am glad you enjoyed your dinner. I love Connor's green men. My Conor will definitely have to have those when he sees them.

OK.. I must be losing it.. but I know that I commented yesterday on your post- after I posted an update.. but then I went to look back today to see if you commented.. and it was no where to be found. Unless, I missed it. Idk.. I guess I'll just repeat myself.. hehe

I can't believe he wouldn't want to go to Brown Derby. Actually I can't believe he would want to miss any of the dining experiences.. unless he was sick or something. I've only missed one time and it was for Sci-fi- last time.. and I was sooo upset but I was motion sick and the sun was making me more sick.

I'm glad you enjoyed your dinner.. it sounds so yummy and the dessert.. yummy. I would like the roasted marshmallow taste too.. hehe I loved roasting marshmallows on a campfire. But I would have to say I prob. would of went with your cake. I like grapefruit and cake.. hehe it would of been a dream come true. :goodvibes

Also, Connor's dessert would also be magical to me.. I love cookie sandwiches and with gummies added! Thats amazing. I'll prob. just have to go there for dessert.

Thanks for sharing your dining experience. I'm glad I leanred more about it because I've never been and because it takes 2 dining meals to eat there- I never went there- worried it wouldn't be worth it. But now I know it would be. Maybe next time for Fantasmic package- doesn't that place go with that?

I love all your pics from DHS. I don't really care for this park- probably because Dh doesn't and he complains the whole time. hehe well not the whole time but alot. But you did a great job capturing the character of this park.

Ohhh.. and I love the green men! I want some of those!

Things are so much slower on the boards when all the teachers go back to work. :upsidedow

Two more days of meetings and then kids arrive Friday. I'm already looking forward to the weekend! :rotfl:

Are our DHs related? Skipping the meal is totally something my DH would do as well. He's not a huge fan of crowded, public places so the kids and I do quite a bit by ourselves. As long as you guys have fun, whatever, right? :) I'm glad it was a yummy meal!

I'm glad you enjoyed Brown Derby! We ate there our last trip. My DH didn't eat with us, either...but for a different reason. Our youngest said he didn't feel well as we were being seated. We said we would get settled, then get him to the restroom to wash his face. WELL...he vomited right on the table before we got to go! Very embarrassing, but poor baby! DH took him back to the room and the other two kids and I were moved to another table and stayed to eat. Looking back, I can't believe I didn't leave because of feeling embarrassed, but we didn't want to lose the dining credits! LOL

OOH I love Brown Derby!!!!! HAHA I love the aliens on the table, and on the car in the parks LMAO!!! Love it!!!!!

Awesome pictures, love the TOT one.

OMG I saw a snake at SSR before!! It was crossing a path way, and went into the water. EEK.

Thank you! Connor was cracking me up with his aliens!

My snake was doing about the same thing -- jumped out of the bushes on one side and high-tailed it into the bushes across the path. Yick!

I can't believe it anyone would want to miss out on the brown derby. You're right though. It's his loss.

It was his loss and Charles is still regretting it. As he should. ;)

I bet Charles regrets missing the Brown Derby now, huh? Especially since you aren't hitting up DHS in October. Hopefully he has learned his lesson!

Let's hope he has learned his lesson -- I know he regrets the steak he missed.

I LOVE those little green men, so cute! I think it's great he had them out at the dinner table-hey whatever keeps a child happy and passes the time, you are in Disney World, you are allowed to be a kid everywhere!! :goodvibes

My thoughts exactly!

I'm glad by the end of the night you were feeling a bit better and not allowing Charles' absence to get to you any longer. It's hard to do when you have dreamed of the trip, and imagined how it would go.

The snake would have so flipped me out too! :scared1:

I just figured I wouldn't let Charles' actions get to me!

The snake took me completely by surprise!

I mainly laugh and tell him, "You can't do that!" I've seen him write it Conner once and hopefully it's just a passing fad. I will definitely pull out the law/birth certificate tactive if I must. :thumbsup2

He will probably outgrow it before you have to take drastic measures! LOL!

I love so much about this chapter. With the exception of Charles' missing, of course. What a bummer.

But, hey, you enjoyed yourselves! I have a little tidbit to share with you here, I'm trying to get caught up on the DIS after days of not signing on. So, I'm reading your chapter and DS walks up.

And says, "Who's that?"

TK - "That's Connor."

DS - "What does Connor have there?"

TK - "Those are little green men, like from Toy Story."

DS - "What's in the bag?"

TK - "The bucket that the little green men came in."

DS - "Can I borrow that bucket from Connor?"

:lmao: So cute. This is because we go to the library all the time, so we're working on the concept of borrowing and returning things. I explained that we could not borrow that from Connor, but since he got that at Disney World, maybe we could get him a bucket of little green men, too. :thumbsup2

I love the Brown Derby, so reading about your meal there is like a little slice of heaven for me. And I'm with you, I don't care whether or not it's a good use of meal credits, I love the Cobb Salad, and I love the Grapefruit Cake. :thumbsup2

I love that story about DS -- too cute! I know that Connor would be totally willing to share his LGM and bucket if we lived closer! You will have to let me know if DS gets a bucket of them for himself in September.

I feel like I had the perfect meal at the Brown Derby!

A last minute change in dinner plans - sounds like something my DH would do - except my DH would have recruited my kids to stay along with him! Glad you enjoyed dinner anyway, it looks delish!

Dinner tasted as divine as it looked!

Love the little green men, but are you finding them all over the house now? I'd probably be stepping on them everywhere if my kids bought them. I'll have to steer them away from that part of the gift shop.

Connor is pretty good about keeping his toys confined to his room and the playroom, but those two rooms can be disasters!

And - :scared1: - on the snake. So startling, hope it didn't take too long to catch your breath.

It only took an elevator ride and a walk to our room for me to catch my breath.

Good luck on the new school year. I wish we started earlier up here. My kids are getting bored already and we have a month left. Then in June, they are dying to get out, and we have to go almost the whole month. Oh well, I suppose the grass is always greener.:upsidedow

Thank you! Since we got out in May, the kids were pretty bored by the time school started here, too!

Jackie, I was so excited to read about another day! I hope your school year is off to a great start. Mine begins in two weeks. I look forward to reading more!

Thank you! Good luck with the start of your school year, and enjoy your last days of summer before it starts!

Oh Charles! Why no Brown Derby? :confused3 Sounds like you guys had a great meal, though! That cake looks awesome!!

Sometimes Charles just baffles me! It was very awesome cake!

Funny! He wants to borrow the bucket but not the LGM!!!

:lmao: Kids always seem to like the containers better than the actual toys!

LOVE the update, but CAN'T BELIEVE CHARLES SKIPPED OUT ON THE BROWN DERBY!!!!!!!!! What was UP with him?!?!?!?!?!?!

SO glad you enjoyed your meal though....it looked and sounded so good!

I TOTALLY would have jumped out of my skin if I had seen a snake....I HATE SNAKES!!!!! I really hope that little guy doesn't find his way over to the POFQ in September....I won't be able to sleep if I see one!!!!

There is NO WAY you could possibly have made a "blunder!" You are too hard on yourself!!! ;)

There is no telling what was up with Charles that night -- he is an enigma!

I jumped so high when I saw that snake, I am surprised I didn't leave my skin lying on the pavement! LOL!

I have never seen any snakes at POFQ, so I am sure you will be fine!

Oh, just you wait on the blunder...

I'm so glad that you still got to enjoy your Brown Derby meal even though Charles didn't want to go. I've just Brown Derby back into my plan specfically so I could try the Cobb Salad. Can't wait!

The Cobb Salad is so good -- I really wish Brown Derby would deliver to Georgia for my lunches! ;)

So glad you enjoyed your meal at the Brown Derby! Sounds like a fun time! Without Charles even!

Sorry about the snake! That would freak me out too!

Can't wait for more!

The kids and I had a lot of fun pretending to be movie stars!

I can't begin to explain how wigged out I was by that snake!

Do you think brown derby is better suited as a 1TS credit restaurant? That dessert looked yummy!

In all honesty? Yeah, probably, but the food was still delicious!

Hi Jackie! WOW, I can't believe you are back in school already! I hope it is all going well! Your TR is SO popular that I must have missed where you are going to Food and Wine! That is AWESOME, how fun!! Sorry Charles missed out on the Brown Derby! I am so glad you had a better experience there then we did! I think our server put a HUGE damper on our experience, I think he left my salad sitting a bit too and that is why I didn't enjoy it very much! I LOVE the picture of Connor and his little green men...so cute! Looking forward to more!:goodvibes

Hi, Diane! Can you believe that we have officially been back in school with students a week now? Charles and I are headed back to Food and Wine the first weekend in October -- we are so excited -- we have never done it before and I have wanted to do it for quite awhile! It should be lots of fun! I am sorry you didn't enjoy Brown Derby -- especially since it is two table credits. :(

Ohhhhhh! I missed your update. I can't believe Charles missed the BD dinner, but I wonder if his diabetes is playing a game with his digestive track so that he gets hungry / not hungry at weird times when he is away from home. IDK....I'm just trying to give him the benefit of the doubt because that meal sounded wonderful. I have to try that cake because I'm pretty sure LL or Jen recommended it as well.

Anyhoo....I can't see your pics now, but I will when I get home. I'm glad Chelsea and Charles did get their thrill on!

I do think Charles's diabetes affected his mood and energy levels on this trip -- hopefully, he will be more fun in October -- he better be anyway! ;)

Yes, you must try the grapefruit cake at some point! Very cool, light, and delicious!

I can't believe Charles missed Brown Derby! I am dying to try that cobb salad!

I couldn't believe it either -- I was just so stunned when he said he was staying back!

I do hope that Charles will be eating with you during the F&W or else you may have to extend your stay and tour with me!!!:rotfl:

If he doesn't, it will be lots of fun to go solo around the booths (thank goodness for WDW transportation ;)), and I would not mind extending my trip one bit -- the students might wonder what happened to me though.

Tracy

I do think the settings add to the flavor of WDW food -- eating grapefruit cake in my kitchen just wouldn't have quite the same feeling as eating it amid all that decadent Hollywood glamor!

So glad you enjoyed your dinner at HBD. It's so great!!!

Sorry that Charles missed it.

Hmmmm I get the feeling the blunder has to do with KP.

Nope, the blunder didn't have to do with KP -- it was even worse than that. :rolleyes1

You dinner sounded so good! I love Cobb salad too. YUM! I think I would like the Grapefruit Cake too.

I would have been rubbing it in all night that this was the best meal of the trip!

Can't wait to hear about your blunder.

Oh, trust me -- I took it one step farther and am still rubbing it in! LOL!

Just caught up again--I'm so glad that you had a great meal--even tho' Charles was a no show!!
Loved Conner's green men and their pictures:goodvibes

Thank you! Connor's LGM were his favorite purchase of the trip judging by how often he plays with them.

I thought I replied but there are too many posts to look through!

He missed dinner! I am glad you went with the kids and had a lovely meal. I love all your pictures of DHS!

Charles, he needs an IV of Pixie Dust this trip I think!

Allyson

:rotfl: " So Mrs._________, what did you do on summer vacation?

"I spent my summer on the DIS boards.....er.....I mean getting ready for the new school year! " :rolleyes1

I want to know if all the teachers go into withdraw when they go back to school? Everytime they see a computer their hands start to shake and they break out in a sweat. Must.....get.....home.....to......DIS.

More replies on the previous page!

I know you asked about where we were staying but I can't remember what page it was on -- we are staying at Pop again. :)

Pop is always such a fun place to stay!

I'm glad that you had such a great meal even though Charles didn't show up. Did you see where they are switching ADRs back to 180 days on October 27?

Love the update:lovestruc

And I HATE snakes...I think you pretty much just talked me out of staying at the AKL...well, take that back. The Zebra Domes you talk about may make up for it;)

Unfortunately, I think snakes can be found at almost all the resorts -- at least they are just little garden variety snakes (that's what I tell myself at any rate...).

Great pics....especially that grapefruit cake. Yum! Must try it!

Yes, yes -- now that you have seen the photo you know just how delicious it looks! :goodvibes

You must be a very patient person. If my husband had decided to skip dinner and leave me with two kids, it would not have been a nice thing to see. I am glad you enjoyed your dinner. I love Connor's green men. My Conor will definitely have to have those when he sees them.

Luckily, Chelsea and Connor are very fun to hang out with and well-behaved, so really that part didn't bother me too much. :goodvibes

OK.. I must be losing it.. but I know that I commented yesterday on your post- after I posted an update.. but then I went to look back today to see if you commented.. and it was no where to be found. Unless, I missed it. Idk.. I guess I'll just repeat myself.. hehe

Nope, I don't think you responded to this update! :goodvibes

I was surprised -- the meals are Charles's favorite part of our trips to Disney. :sad2:

I'm glad you enjoyed your dinner.. it sounds so yummy and the dessert.. yummy. I would like the roasted marshmallow taste too.. hehe I loved roasting marshmallows on a campfire. But I would have to say I prob. would of went with your cake. I like grapefruit and cake.. hehe it would of been a dream come true. :goodvibes

:lmao: We are big fans of gummies here as well -- a bag of bears or worms always seem to sneak their way into the grocery cart. ;)

Thanks for sharing your dining experience. I'm glad I leanred more about it because I've never been and because it takes 2 dining meals to eat there- I never went there- worried it wouldn't be worth it. But now I know it would be. Maybe next time for Fantasmic package- doesn't that place go with that?

Yes, there is a Fantasmic package at Brown Derby -- that would work out well!

I love all your pics from DHS. I don't really care for this park- probably because Dh doesn't and he complains the whole time. hehe well not the whole time but alot. But you did a great job capturing the character of this park.

Thank you! :goodvibes

Ohhh.. and I love the green men! I want some of those!

Connor was so pleased to finally get them that evening after waiting all day.

Things are so much slower on the boards when all the teachers go back to work. :upsidedow

Two more days of meetings and then kids arrive Friday. I'm already looking forward to the weekend! :rotfl:

Yep, it really bothers me that I can't devote my normal attention to the DIS. :sad2:

Tomorrow's the big day for you! Did you meet a lot of your students at open house?

Are our DHs related? Skipping the meal is totally something my DH would do as well. He's not a huge fan of crowded, public places so the kids and I do quite a bit by ourselves. As long as you guys have fun, whatever, right? :) I'm glad it was a yummy meal!

That was my attitude -- I figured if I had really forced Charles to come he probably would have been so grumpy about it that it would have ruined the meal.

LOL

Oh, no!!! What a horrible experience for you and DS (and DH)! You'll need to go back there again someday when everyone is feeling better!

:lmao::rotfl::rotfl2: I know I do -- there are a lot of times when I look longingly at the computer while the kids are working and think, "I could just see what everyone is up to on the DIS very quickly..." As the school year goes on, I do find myself doing that occasionally ;).

I thought I replied but there are too many posts to look through!

He missed dinner! I am glad you went with the kids and had a lovely meal. I love all your pictures of DHS!

Charles, he needs an IV of Pixie Dust this trip I think!

Allyson

Yes, somebody needs to slip some pixie dust into his margarita, that's for sure!!! ;)

Holy Moly, how in the world did I get so far behind!

My goodness....3 days camping and I'm somehow totally off track!

First of all, Chelsea's box is adorable! I love it! And adult jewelry making?

sigh.

“What do you mean you aren’t coming to dinner?”

I believe those are the exact words I said when Charles informed me that he wasn’t coming to the Hollywood Brown Derby with us, and for no good reason other than he just didn‘t feel like eating there that night.

I was livid.

As the kids and I were leaving, Charles asked if I would call him when we were finished, and he would meet us at the park. I retorted, “No, but Chelsea might.”

As we walked down to the buses, I decided I was no longer going to let Charles’ non-participation in our vacation get to me. I was at my favorite place in the world with my children, and we were going to have a great time no matter what -- with or without Charles.

I ordered a Hollywood as my drink, and it was just perfect.

138.jpg

For dinner, I ordered the Cobb Salad as my entrée (I know, I know -- not a wise use of my dining plan credits but that’s what I wanted), Chelsea had the steak which was excellent (I had to have a couple of bites), and Connor ordered the grilled cheese and chicken noodle soup (he wasn’t happy that there were bits of celery in his chicken noodle soup. My Cobb Salad was divine -- I think I could happily eat it for lunch every single day (or dinner).

Since we were eating at the Brown Derby, I HAD to order the famous grapefruit cake. Holy Wonderful Cake! I deemed it delicious enough to preserve it forever in our photographic memories! I also thought it was a neat touch that they had done the 20th anniversary logo on the plate (it was edible, by the way).

141.jpg

Connor had the Hidden Treasures -- cookie, ice cream, and gummy worms. While we were waiting on our desserts, Connor had a grand time arranging his Little Green Men on the table (yes, we are a class act at fancy restaurants ;)).

143.jpg

Our dinner was absolutely delightful, and we would revisit the Brown Derby in a heartbeat!

Sure enough when Charles met us, he had low blood sugar because he hadn’t eaten dinner. He ate a pretzel and drank a coke before he and Chelsea headed off to ride their thrill rides.

Connor wanted to pose by the car, and so did the Little Green Men. I did, however, manage to convince them that only a few needed to make an appearance.

151.jpg

Oh my. Just. Oh my.

I truthfully would not have unthawed for days in that situation. Sure, I'd have forged on and enjoyed the evening with my kids but the unthawing?

Wow. The kids seemed to roll with it and have fun so I guess that's good.

It's the Brown Derby! You HAVE to have the Cobb Salad! I think it's a rule. Although it is the reason I think I'd do it OOP if we ever eat there. But if we do, I will shamelessly copy evertying you ordered, including the drink (and I'd have had two if I were in your shoes lol!)

I can see the menu not doing a whole lot for my DH but to ditch us...hmmmn. The man owes you a do over!

I'm glad you were able to shake it and move forward. I had an ex who deliberately ruined a DLR trip (and bragged about it afterwards), at the time, I wasn't able to move on and just enjoy the trip with my kids like you did and I think it's great that you really didn't let it get to you. The fact that you didn't comes through in your writing and your pictures. Charles participation or not you guys are clearly having a wonderful trip!

I  the little green men appearing everywhere.
