Resort Thread Disney's PORT ORLEANS RIVERSIDE Resort

Hi! Just booked Riverside for the first time and have a question! We are staying in a Royal room and looking at the map, those buildings look to be pretty far from the main building. Do you recommend having a car? Or is it easily walkable? I currently have a rental car booked and am trying to decide whether to keep it or not...

Thanks for your help!

It's easily walkable if you are able bodied. The rooms on the far side of Parterre Place near FQ take a few extra minutes but all locations are around 5-8 minutes to the main buildings. We stayed in the center of Parterre and enjoyed the walk through the courtyard, past the fountain, along the river and over the bridge. Stay present in the beauty of the surroundings rather than rush from place to place.

Ok, super silly question, but are there elevators for the rooms? When I think of garden style/motel style accommodations with external entries I always think of stairs and no elevators. We'll have the kids and a double stroller so just wondering if we'll need to lug the stroller up/down the stairs or if we will be able to use the elevator. Thanks!

The Alligator Bayou section does not have elevators. There are elevators in the mansions section. You can always request first floor, too, then it won't matter (unless you don't get your request, of course!) ;)

Thank you! We are staying in a royal room, so I guess that means we'll be in one of the mansions. I'm glad that there will be an elevator for our stroller!

Bear in mind that the elevators are only in the middle of the central block of the buildings, so you might want to request a room near the center if you will need the elevator every time you want to get to your room, just to avoid too much walking along corridors to and from the elevator.

Why is "King" or "Preferred" choices on the Check In room requests when the cost of the package/room is based on those choices? Does that mean if you get that request you would pay for the upgrade at check-in?

Nobody has any idea why they put those options as requests.

Question for you POR experts...
We have a trip planned for sept 8th- 17th staying at POR which we are very excited about! However, my hubby and I did get the surprising yet fabulous news that we are expecting. I'll be about 10-11 weeks so zika is definitely something on our minds ( that we are monitoring closely and feel we are ok to go at this point). My question is this: can anyone tell me how bad the bugs are (specifically mosquitos) at the resort? We're trying to stay in the mansion section because it seems less woodsy but I'm curious about the other surrounding areas. Thanks in advance!

I am needing help on our stay in December. I can't decide if I should book a preferred room and stay in the AB section, or book a garden view room and request the mansions blgs. I want to be close to the buses and to the food court, but am worried about the South bus depot. It sounds like it is the most crowded. It will be me, DH, and 2 sons (10 and 7) so they will definitely want to swim some. Any recommendations? I'm so confused!!

We were in a preferred room, building 14, and it was very convenient to the food court, the main pool and the south depot. The south depot is the most crowded but we always got on a bus, although we often had to stand. My sister had a room in the mansion section which was very close to the main pool. She usually ended up using the south depot because they usually got on the bus right after breakfast or wanted to stop in the food court before going to their room.

Our grandsons are 10 and 12 and being close to the food court was really nice. They also used the pool every day.

Building 14 is a really good location! I just stayed there in February and it was so nice.

We were there 2 weeks ago and saw no mosquitos. We stayed in Acadia. Actually, we didn't notice an bugs.

Quick question relative to the order of the bus stops @por ..... is this South (Main) Depot always the first or last stop when going to the parks? If it is the last stop is the bus usually full, standing room only?

Congrats!!!
Disney sprays for mosquitos constantly. My town, a Chicago suburb, just sprayed last night. So LOUD. Check with your OBGYN but WDW really takes care of bugs...my husband gets bit up here all the time, even with bug spray, but has never been bit at WDW. Enjoy your trip.

I would love more info or opinions on the pirate adventures. My girls are 6 and 8 and my son will be freshly 4. I know it's 2 hours long, they get life jackets, "booty," snack. Do they get bathroom breaks? Any info is appreciated!

I've seen the kids do the pirate cruise at POR and it looked like they were having a great time. I don't know the specific details of the POR cruise but I do know that they wear life jackets, which are black and look like pirate vests. They also wear bandanas. My grandson, age 8, and granddaughter, age 6, did the pirate cruise out of the Yacht Club marina last October. They sailed into Epcot and looked for pirate treasure. They also had a bathroom break and they got snacks afterward. The snacks included apple juice, apple slices and Goldfish crackers. They had a great time and loved the treasure chest they got from the cruise. I would think that all of the pirate cruises would follow the same format.

Just back from our first stay at POR and enjoyed it quite a bit! Thought I'd share my experience on a few things, including results with room requests and an attempted early check in. I spent quite a lot of time on PortOrleans.org and the Touring Plans website looking at pictures, maps, room views, etc.. Not to mention reading posts here. I settled on my ideal area and requests and tried to keep it fairly simple while giving some sample room numbers in Acadian House on my TP room request. On the online check-in, I gave a 12:30 pm arrival and asked to prioritize a ready room over other requests. I got a text at maybe 11-11:30 that our room wasn't ready yet and they'd keep us posted. Nothing more after that. I think we arrived around 1:15-1:30, checked in, and nothing was ready at that point. They were having some computer issues and there seemed to be quite a few people waiting around, though I'm not sure how many were just checking in. We waited maybe 45 minutes while trying to decide if we should store our luggage and head to Animal Kingdom. I double checked on room status and the very helpful CM managed to get us into a room in Magnolia Terrace. It wasn't much of what we requested besides Mansions and somewhat close to transportation, but ended up working out just fine anyway, and it was definitely better that we got the room considering how exhausted we were by the time we got back that night. The room was very quiet and comfortable.

We had a rental car, but took the bus to Magic Kingdom and one evening to Hollywood Studios. We used the East bus stop, and through some miracle, 4 out of 5 times our bus was arriving at the same time we did. The 5th time we waited probably 15 minutes, and then got stuck in horrible traffic on the way to MK, but that seemed to be an anomaly. Most of the times, buses were pretty packed, but usually at least 1-2 of us got seats. I saw several cases where people gave up seats to those who needed them (small kids, seniors). And then some buses were quite empty. Coming back was good for the most part, but we did wait for a 3rd bus coming back from DHS after the Star Wars show (and a leisurely exit to avoid crowds). It still wasn't a terribly long time though, considering. The sign at the bus stop only seemed to ever show times for 2-3 of the places, and not ever where I was going, so those weren't helpful at all. Not that I really needed them as I was running to the bus.

Overall, we spent more time at the parks than the resort, and sadly never even made it to the pools, but definitely liked POR and would consider it as option again in the future. Thanks to all of you who've shared helpful info here!
