Resort Thread Disney's PORT ORLEANS RIVERSIDE Resort

Hey all! Just switched our trip from November to September. Booked a RR with a riverview. Have stayed here in the past but always in AB. Travelling solo with a 7 month old and 13 year old. Other then wanting to request ground floor b/c of the stroller, any other suggestions to request my main goal is to be centrally located to the lobby and buses. Thanks!

Help me decide between 3 buildings...39, 16, or 17?? We want to be close to a pool, quiet or main, doesn't matter and a relatively short distance to the food court.

We originally paid for preferred, but when free dining came out we had to go with garden view...so now I'm trying to figure out the most convenient building.

:thanks:

Just ask for what you want, close to a pool and the food court, rather than trying to figure out which building to request.

Yep, much better idea. You could end up in one of those buildings, but on the far side, further away from where you want to be! Just let them know what you're looking for and they can place you in the best spot.

Probably just ask for a room close to the footbridge leading to the main building. The River View rooms in the northern wing of Parterre Place are especially nice.

just returned from our stay at POR 5/22-5/30. Booked RR river view, sent fax 4 days before arrival. The faxing works people, we had to wait for our room until 3:06 but got all our requests. General thoughts, overall the resort was as great as always, CM's for the most part were all friendly. The buses were efficient, never had a long wait. All buses used south depot first with the exception of Magic Kingdom that went to West first with south being last. Never hesitated to use a POFQ bus coming back from parks if the POR bus looked too crowded. Travel from typhoon lagoon sucks with the transfer at Epcot. Travel to Hoop dee doo took exactly 1hr from our room to wilderness campground and it really is a good time. Used taxi's twice, to Poly and GF, both were $20 including tip.
2 things that were not so good but really didn't affect us were the bridge connecting Old Man Island to the main hub was taken out of service around 5/28 and was still out of service when we left. Made for a long walk for some folks. I didn't ask when it was supposed to be fixed.
Another was we saw lots of signage about a riverside "fair" with BBQ, characters, games etc that was supposed to take place 5/24 and nothing happened. The CM's acted like they had no clue so that was quite a head scratcher.
Still a great resort

We were also there 5/23 - 5/30. We didn't get our room requests even though we sent a fax 3 days prior, but it was ok (no guarantees and all). We requested an upper floor garden view in bldg 85 (mansions), but we ended up in bldg 80 near the quiet pool. I wanted to love Port Orleans Riverside, but the extra walking really wore us down after a long hot day in the parks. We were so tired from our arrival day at Animal Kingdom, that we ordered Disney pizza delivery. Let's just say, we won't ever do that again...it was not very good. :crazy2: The closure of the bridge to the main building was the final straw. It was out of service 5/27 - 5/29. The day we were checking out 5/30, the bridge was re-opened.:rolleyes2 We only ate at Riverside Mill once prior to the bridge closure because we didn't feel like walking down to the Royal Rooms section just to eat. We used the North bus depot mostly to get to the parks. We did get a chance to participate in the Riverside Fair. It was 5/24, the one day that we ate at the food court around 5 PM or so. There were games, music and a character meet with Minnie Mouse dressed in red, white, and blue. It was fun, and I'm glad they did it before the bridge closure. I thought the bus service was great for the size of the resort. Perhaps someday in the distant future I may consider Riverside again, but right now I'd rather stick with deluxe or value.

Most of the Memorial Weekend activities were daytime on the Sunday (barbeque lunch and early afternoon pool games and lobby activities, etc) so maybe you were at a park then? The front desk staff should have been able to confirm though, and there were timetable signs up too:

Why can't they have one of these on Labor day when I'm there?

Just how bad is the walk from the Royal Rooms. DH wants to stay in one but 3 nights in a LM room at AoA got him complaining. I must add that our time at AoA was extremely cold and DH had wanted to stay at POR and it would have been cheaper.

Should I go for the RR or try to talk him out of it. I think his negativity came from not wanting to stay there and it being cold.

It depends on the room to be honest as the mansion building are quite big (256 rooms in each). Some of the rooms in the northern wing of Parterre Place or the southern end of Oak Manor are about the closest to the main building and the South bus stop of any of the rooms around the resort (apart from Alligator Bayou #14). But equally, some are a good bit further away.

The yellow area in the map below is around 250 yards to the food court and South bus stop (and less than that to the central Lobby) while pink could be up to 500 yards.

I know it for sure hadn't started by 3:00 pm, and I think we left for Hoop dee doo at 4:30 so maybe they got a late start.

Our RR, river view room, was located on the third floor, right beneath the 'er' of Parterre Place on your map. We routinely used the closest bridge...took about 4-5 mins to get to the food court/ bus stop area.
It was a great location.
My only question was how do any guests, with mobility issues, access this building from the river side? We saw only steps.

There are elevators in the middle of each building, and the walkways go around the whole building providing access to all rooms.

However the only two ramped access points from the riverbank pathway lead into the 'wing' sections, so it's a bit of a meandering route around the building to get to the elevators if you need to get to an upper floor:

I've been lurking on this thread for months picking up tips and gaining insight about POR. But thank you Andrewwilley and folks for making my planning that much easier. My trip with my family is all set for end of July and needless to say we're excited to be staying here!

I have a question that might be better suited for the DISabilities forum, but I thought I would try my luck here first since so many of you folks are so knowledgeable about POR! :goodvibes

If I decide to switch my upcoming stay to POR (which I'm seriously considering), it will be my first time as an ECV-user at a resort with multiple bus stops. In the past, it's been my understanding that ECVs/wheelchairs must be loaded onto an empty bus, for the safety of all passengers. How does this work at a moderate resort like POR, where there odds are very good that when I report to the bus stop closest to my room, every bus that pulls up may have already visited other portions of the resort and have people on it?

I know they won't evacuate the bus just to load my ECV onto it (nor would I want them to!), so how can I be best prepared? Is there a set Depot order the buses consistently use every time, and if so, should I just always report to very first stop on the circuit, rather than the one closest to my room? If I switch to POR, it will be to a Royal Guest Room, so I had planned on just crossing the bridge from those two buildings and using the South Depot (which is my preferred bus stop regardless, due to it's proximity to the main resort areas).

Helpful responses appreciated! Thank you! :cutie:

How's the walk from POR to POFQ? I want to walk over one day to get beignets :)
it is beautiful! If you like going for a stroll, you'll love it. it's really not so far. At one point, I could see the mansions and FQ buildings. It probably took us 15-20 min, but we were all the way over in building 24 and had our 6 year old with us, so the pace was leisurely.

ETA: The beignets were totally worth the walk!

Hmmm...on every one of our trips that I can recall, we have seen the drive load an ECV on a bus with people already on it. We have stayed at POR and CBR, both have multiple stops, and even if it's the last stop as long as the ECV area is empty they will load the ECV. So I really wouldn't worry about it.
