Disney's Magical Express -- Luggage Tag Info

My sister's family is not arriving to MCO until 11pm. I understand that when you let DME claim your luggage for you it can sometimes take several hours... in this case since it will already be really late when they arrive should they just claim the luggage themselves in order to avoid a 2 or 3am call that their luggage has arrived?
If they do want to claim the luggage themselves should they just leave off the yellow DME tags?

Thanks!

Yep..if they are going to claim their own bags, then they shouldn't put those yellow tags on them. That's not a bad idea late at night.

So if I decide to NOT use the ME tags, and retrieve my own luggage, I will be expected to tip the ME bus driver for getting in on and off the bus for me? Not that I mind, but I want to make sure I understand it correctly. Also would I do the same for the return trip?

What happens if I do use my tags and the airline loses one (or more) of my bags, will ME look for my bags?

I'm still trying to decide whether to use my tags or not.

Will he be lugging your bags? Then he would get a tip.

I don't think enough people realize this. When I handed my DME driver one, I thought he was going to faint from shock :sad2: This is one I don't understand, since it's so simple to set aside a few extra bucks since it's a free ride that you would normally need to budget for something else in its place.

Thanks for the information. That is why I LOVE these boards.

So, if I DO use my tags, then Disney covers the tip? Is that correct? Although, I would still tip him for driving me. :)

The way I (and many many others) see it, a tip is for someone who provided a personalized service specifically for me. A food server brings my food to me personally. If a bus driver handles MY luggage, then that person gets a tip from me. A bus driver who drives me along with 20 other people doesn't get a tip from me unless he/she did something specifically for me (rather than for the entire group).

If you have carry-ons, you may choose to bring them onto the bus with you if they will fit on the overhead sheld or under your seat. If they won't fit, or if you just don't want to mess with them, then the driver will load them under the bus (and you'll get them back as soon as you get to your resort). In this case, since the driver provided a personalized service for you (touched your bags), I'd tip for that.

The only tip that Disney covers is the in-bound bellman gratuity for checked luggage that DME handles. If you claim your own bags, then you are responsible for all tips associated with those bags,

Disney has been offering this really cool service for 2.5 years now, and literally millions of people have used it. Just try it and enjoy it.:goodvibes

We have 6 weeks left before vacation. When should I receive the tags?

Thank you

I'm leaving on Dec 6 and got my DME packet/tags just over a week ago.

We leave on Dec 18th, so not long after you. Mine should come anyday? Thanks for your quick reply! Have a fun vacation!

hi, i am in australia and we have booked ME for our trip Dec 30! However our travel agent (the magic for less travel) told me that i wont receive the tags or anything from disney as i am in Australia. This doesnt seem right to me as i have nothing to say i have paid or of my reservation or anything. Can someone please clarify this for me and if this seems normal

Thanks in advance

If one uses a travel agent, then one's DME documents are ALWAYS mailed to the TA, and then it is between you and the TA to agree on how you will get the documents.

No matter where you live, you should still receive the information. Please contact your TA, and then your TA's supervisor if necessary.

No worries!

Disney's Magical Express is free... you should not have paid for it.

Just curious, we are planning on gate checking our stroller, should we be tagging it with a yellow tag as well, if we don't plan on needing it/using it right away, or can we just have it stowed under bus without the yellow tag? Thanks

If you gate check it, you will get it back at the gate at Orlando. It won't be sent with the rest of the luggage into the bowels of the airport, so you will have to take it with you to the bus, where the driver will happily stow it for you under the bus (and you will happily tip for this service ;) ).

The only luggage that is tagged with those yellow tags is the luggage that you hand over to be checked. If you are going to gate check the stroller, do not tag it. You will get a different tag at the gate (I believe). Then, it will be waiting for you when you deplane at MCO, and it will go underneath the bus you are riding on to your resort.

Ok so I am going to tag all my luggage before goint to our local airport, to fly to Orlando. I will be using the yellow tags, and my bags with tags, will magically appear at our resort. nice. I understand that part finally :) ha ha

Now when I gate check my stroller our our airport, I will get it once arriving to ORlando. Where exactly do I have to claim the stroller at , I know I hear it will be given to us at the gate, but is that right where we are entering, as we walk into the Orlando airport? Sorry I just want to make sure this trip goes smoothe :) and I am worrying about every detail. Thanks for all the help.

First time flyer, here. I'm also curious about what it means to check your luggage at the gate, and why you would do so. Thanks!

Depends on the airline. Allegiant unfolded ours for us and it was waiting by the door of the plane as we exited. Spirit threw ours down, unfolded by another gate. We had to have an employee help find it. On the return flight, they told us it was at the gate, and it was still on the plane. So, you never know! I would still gate check it though- and hopefully you aren't flying Spirit or I just freaked you out even more. ;)

You don't check your luggage at the gate. The only time that 'might' happen is if your carryon bag was too large to take on with you..then it would have to be checked luggage.
When you get to your airport, for your departing flight, you will go directly to your particular airline's counter. There your luggage will be tagges with the airline's destination tag (DME yellow tags will be put on at your home), then you are given claim receipts for the bags. Your bags will go away, not to be seen again, until you get to your resort (if you have put the yellow DME tags on them). You, then, head to security at the airport. Your carryon bag goes through the scanner, your quart sized ziploc baggie (with 3 oz toiletries) goes on it's own. Your shoes most likely go as well, along with any coats or such. You will be asked to show your ID and boarding pass before going through security and then again as you exit the human scanner. Collect your belongings and off to the gate you go. There, you will await instruction when it's time to board. At this point, if someone had a stroller, wheelchair, etc., it would be 'gate-checked'. It is taken away before you board the plane, tagged and put in the belly of the plane. When the plane lands, the gate-checked items are taken out first, brought up to the jetway, where they are handed off to the appropriate passenger, who then leaves the jetway.
HOpe that helps a bit.
