Disney's FORT WILDERNESS CABINS & CAMPGROUNDS Thread

Just booking the cabins for this November as my mom and dad just decided to join our group :D My question is how good is the transportation? should I seriously consider renting a car????? we only do one park a day and such but is it better to have our own way to get around?

The boat to magic Kingdom was wonderful. We were also within walking distance to the boat launch which made it very convenient. We found the busses to take quite a while, especially when having to use the internal bus. We waited over a half hour for an orange bus at one point.

Good Morning Everyone!!

It's feels like an eternity since I've been on the Dis!! :upsidedow The end of the school year is always crazy....we're out in 10 days:cool1: Then we're off to WDW!!!!!!

We are in the 800 loop. Seems like a great location! The can pick up was awesome. They picked us up right at our campsite and dropped us at the gates of AK. Definitely ask about it if you have an early ADR! We tipped the driver but definitely better than taking a taxi! We had a great day yesterday at Animal Kingdom, dinner at AKL, then the evening at MK. We also did Mickey's Backyard BBQ on our arrival day. We were nervous with all the negative reviews but we loved it!!! Today is a down day at the fort.

Sounds like your trip was a success!!! Awesome!! So glad you liked MBYBBQ. When our kids were younger, they loved it, too. Lots of character interaction. And lots of ice cream

I looked at the BBQ but decided against it...have also thought about HDR...not sure if the kids (7 and 3) would enjoy it as much though?

We've done both....really liked both but they're very different. We took our kids to the HDDR when they were really young and they LOVED it!!! We've been back 3 times....and they still love it. Perhaps it's the fried chicken and ribs...we do like to eat!!! ;)

DH and I are considering changing our December trip from POR to FW Cabins. We have three girls, ages 12, 9 and 7 so the space offered in the cabins is certainly enticing. As is the fact that we could sit out on the deck with a glass of wine at the end of the day. We also like the idea that it's so close to the MK without paying deluxe prices.

We've stayed at POR and really enjoyed it....however....the extra room at FW is totally wonderful with a family of 5. It's great having two separate rooms...kids watchcing TV in one room, and parents in the other :thumbsup2

I'm a little confused about the golf cart situation. I read they are $59/day for the 4-seater, which might work as youngest DD is very petite and can maybe sit on my lap. Is there a weekly rental rate as well? Are there outside companies that will rent you a golf cart and deliver it?

We're on the fence about renting a car while there as well. Are there advantages to having one at FW? If we don't rent a car, what about groceries? Is Garden Grocer a good option for the cabins?

I think that's it for now. I'm sure I'll think up many more questions for you all.

The golf cart thing is so subjective, ya know. While my family absolutely positively has to have one  , other families don't. It's all what you prefer and need. It's totally doable without one. We've only rented from FW, but others use outside agencies...they tend to be less expensive. Several Disers on this thread have used other companies. I'll have to go back and look to see exactly which rental they used.

 Howdy, Heather!

:wave2: Was just up in your neck of the woods last weekend!!! ::yes::

Just made our switch from POR to Fort Wilderness Cabins for Sept 13 to 20, is there a loop for the cabins that is better for getting around to the trading post and pools?

:cheer2:

We like 2100 and 2200...it's about as central as you can get for a cabin. Unfortunately the cabins are not as close to the trading post and main pool as the some of the campsites. Look at the map on the first page and it will give you a visual, and maybe help you decide which loop is a fit for your family.

We will be staying in the Cabins 11/30-12/5 ,Can't wait to be back

:cool1::woohoo:

Has anyone by chance seen the May movie schedule yet? Excited for planning and sooo close!:cool1:

I updated the movie link on the first page:thumbsup2

Happy Planning!!!

Got free dining for our September stay! :cool1:

Now if only it was not so far away......

:cheer2: It will be here before you know it!!!!!

Just booked our cabin with FREE DINING for November 15-22, 2014!!! this will be our first stay at FW and we are so looking forward to it! We booked our golf cart yesterday, so now all we have to do is WAIT!!

thanks for creating this thread!!!

:thumbsup2 Booking a trip is always so exciting!!!! But waiting is for the birds ....the worst part of a Disney trip!!! :upsidedow....other than the last day

After much debate, number crunching, and resort changing... we are booked in the Fort Wilderness cabins from September 21-29 with FD!

I booked our golf cart today! SO EXCITED!

I am switching a lot of our ADRs around and was wondering if the HDDR is worth it? Our kids will be 8, 5, 2, 2?

Thank you!

Congrats on that booking!!! Our family totally enjoyed HDDR!! We took ours for the first time when our youngest was 3....loved it!!!! And we've been back several times. The last time we went, we sat in the balcony and actually enjoyed it more up there...the kids were able to see much better.

You will hear differing opinions on the transportation...not sure I'm going to be much help on this. Maybe you could rent a golf cart instead of a car...not sure which is more economical :confused3 Then you could head straight to the boat or main bus stop without having to use the internal buses...just a thought. I don't think the FW buses to and from the parks will be any slower or faster than the buses at other resorts.

We were successful in changing our December reservation to the cabins and have extended our dates. We'll be staying Dec 13-26 with free dining! I guess I need to change my ticker since we are cancelling our cruise. Bummed about the cruise, but so excited to have two weeks at WDW!

The one bathroom in the cabins doesn't really concern me since the younger DDs and I like to shower at night and DH and oldest DD like to do it in the morning. However, I think I would like to be near a comfort station for those rare times we might all be trying to use the bathroom at the same time. It looks like the only comfort station is in or near the 2100 loop, is that right? Can I request a loop when doing online check in?

Also, DH would love to decorate the cabin a little for the holidays. What are the rules/restrictions about attaching lights or a wreath to the door and deck railing? We'll probably order a small tree from Amazon to decorate the inside as well.

:cool1: Great time to visit with all the decorations! And 2 weeks at Disney should make up for the cruise:thumbsup2

I requested our loop online or you can just call and request.

The Fort is totally decorated at Christmas! People go all out! I've attached the rules and regulations.

Awesome... I thought there was some restrictions on outside carts on property?

One more question, i know you can park carts at the boat dock, but can you also park at the front bus stop?

I think there have been some changes as to who can rent from offsite, but I'm not sure who that involves. We were there in late January and it may have changed since then.

Yes, there is parking at the marina area as well as the entrance to the campground so you can board the buses that go to resorts, DTD, etc. There are various parking areas around the campground and also at the camp stores.

Happy Saturday Everyone!

Here's a little more info about the cart rentals ...

Carts can be rented for $63.54/day ($59 plus tax) at the Outpost (407-824-2742). There are golf cart hook ups at each cabin and campsite as well as other places within the resort.

6 seater golf carts are available($79 plus tax) but cannot be reserved. Upon arrival, you can inquire about the 6 seater. If they are available, it will be yours. If not, you can put your name on a waiting list for the duration of your stay.

Here are a couple of links that might give you some info. There is much debate about offsite rentals. Many say it can still be done, while Disney says it's prohibited. We've personally never rented from an outside agency...it makes me nervous :upsidedow We'll be there in 17 days :dance3: so I'm going to do some serious searching for answers!

So I Googled Cardboard Box Oven and to my amazement, there is such a thing  Didn't know it was possible! Sounds fun! My boys would love giving something like that a try.

:worship: A Scoutmaster AND a cardboard box oven chef!! :thumbsup2 I'm impressed. It takes lots of patience and time to work with young people.

That is too cool. I am going to have to experiment with that this summer.
