Disney's FORT WILDERNESS CABINS & CAMPGROUNDS Thread

Hope everyone is having a fabulous Saturday and staying warm. Rainy and nasty here today in South Georgia....so guess that means a little DisTime;) and maybe some more trip planning :teeth:

We prefer our car. Taking the boat over was okay but at the end of the day we wished we'd had our car. I do like taking the bus around the resort. I even took it one stop from laundry to our loop earlier today because it was cold and rainy.

We've never had good luck with resort buses but it's a nice option if we want to split up like we did the other day. My son and I rode the bus back the other day.

We took today off and the kids hung out in the cabin with DP doing homework while I did laundry. We went to DTD and ate lunch and shopped. It's not quite 7 and we're back at the cabin. We may or may not go to the pool later. It's way too cold for me, but the kids....

Sounds like your trip is going well:thumbsup2 Thanks for the info on the boat/buses. I'm like you with the pools....must be a little on the warm side for me to swim  I certainly don't like being cold!

Found my own answer! The powers of reading are amazing!

What was your question? Glad you found the answer:thumbsup2

Is there a refill station if you buy the mugs?
Thanks

Yep! Although it's not like the other resorts since there isn't a QS restaurant, so-to-speak. There are refill stations at Pioneer Hall (Trail's End) and The Meadows pool.

We are supposed to be staying at AoA but OMG..what I wouldn't do to convince everyone to stay at the cabins...TOTALLY my fav!!

First time in the cabins Feb 21-28. 2 cabins with 5 adults, 4 kids. DH is a coffee snob so I really need to know what size filters the 10 cup coffee maker uses so I can bring coffee & filters.

Can't wait to be there! 12 days to go & we haven't told the kids yet!

Just hit 40 days!!! :cool1:

Hopefully we survive, this past week was brutal for my wife, she was sick and the boys only were in school for a total of a 1/2 day due to snow and ice storms. They had a 2 hour delay this morning but at least they were back in school. They are now calling for another 6-12" of snow mid week and possibly more this upcoming weekend. Glad we aren't planning on heading down for a few weeks because right now I don't think we could get the camper out of the driveway, it is currently buried behind the frozen snowbanks.

We wanted to give AoA a try back in December, but couldn't get 2 rooms :upsidedow I'm sure you will have a fabulous time! Of course I totally get why FW cabins are your fav ;)

As far as your coffee snob hubby goes :snooty: (I'm right there with him-gotta have my Starbucks daily:thumbsup2 We used the regular coffee filters - not the cone filters. And if I remember correctly, I ran out and Mousekeeping was gracious enough to give me more.

Yikes!!! :scared1: Horrid weather for y'all! And sorry to hear about your wife...being sick and cold weather are the pits. Hope she is doing much better. The winter weather this year has been unbelievable. At least y'all can look on the bright side..... 40 more days and you will be :drive: headed to the World!!!! Exciting!!

Here's a little pixiedust: to help melt those snowbanks that surround your camper!!

:wave2: Hope you're doing well and not under the weather, too.

Thanks! Telling the kids this Saturday on my niece's birthday. party: It's killing me but my sister doesn't want to hear the kids ask 'how many days left?' For more than a week. If I tell DS he will tell his cousins immediately!

How far out do you experienced FW'ers think its good to book? We are planning a June 2015 stay with a rented RV. I'm wondering if I should put deposits in sooner rather than later?:confused3

Looks like we're going to need a lot of pixiedust:. Between the temperatures and the number of storms, nothing real big but just enough to screw up traffic and close the schools, this has probably been the harshest winter we've had since we moved to the area 12 years ago. The latest national weather forecast has us at 6"-8" of snow and .1"-.25" of ice. I hope they are wrong about the ice, we got lucky last week and never lost power but we still have friends without power from last week's ice storm and quite a few friends were without power for 3-4 days last week.

Many people having differing opinions about the "right" time to book a reservation, but 1 year in advance is ample time. You don't have to worry about it being full (JMO, of course ;)) The 2015 prices won't be out until late Summer. No worries....you'll get that perfect spot at the Fort:thumbsup2

You have so got to be kidding me!!!! Unreal!!! I feel for y'all, and certainly can't imagine having to endure that. Guess I shouldn't complain about our 35 degree weather....I should probably be thankful. Maybe it won't be as bad as they are forecasting. Keep us posted!

Think Disney.....just think Disney!!!!!

We booked in February for an October stay.

Are y'all doing MNSSHP?? Such a great time of year to visit the World!!:thumbsup2

Those shirts are amazing! :thumbsup2

Aren't they fabulous!!! I want 5 of those!!!

Yea, I'm kinda hoping that when I make our reservation for October, which I have to wait until April for, that AoA suites will be booked ;) that way I will HAVE to tell everyone else ..SORRY all booked up so we are staying at the cabins :scratchin

We just got back from the cabins. We were there Feb 2-8. I hate to say this but I would not stay again. I knew of the bus to catch a bus deal so we rented a golf cart. That was helpful but there were still problems. No one told us that the boat to MK didn't start until 8:30. What are you supposed to do with a BBB Appt. at 8? My wife and granddaughter were on the bus to catch the boat and the driver told her it wasn't operating until 8:30. Luckily she got special permission to drive them over to MK. Another day we couldn't leave the boat dock to MK because of fog. So we were told they would bring in buses. Went to bus stop and no one knew what we were talking about. So headed back to boat dock and they said the buses should have been running to MK. :confused3. Finally an hour later the fog lifted and we were on our way to MK but missed rope drop. There is no convenient place to fill your mugs and no where to fill them before 730 or after 10 at night. The Cabins were OK but nothing special. My grandsons loved them so I guess thats what matters. The roof leaked and we had a puddle on the floor. We also ran out of hot water after 1 shower. I have read many great reviews about the cabins so I was surprised by this. We stayed at Riverside last year and it was much better imho. We cancelled the AOA suite because it didn't offer free dining. If everything was the same I would have much preferred AOA. Thanks.

I looked on the main page and saw our name down. YAY!! I didn't give you my dates and I noticed the name right after ours will be at the Cabins the same week we are there. So here are my dates: We will be there September 7th (my 42nd birthday) thru September 13th. I am trying to work it out where we can get there on the 6th, but I don't think it's going to be possible.

Thanks!!

Thank you so much for being honest. It is a reality check! I for one, can be guilty of dreaming up the perfect vacation... I did it this past summer. We went to London, Paris, and Brussels and I just had in my head exactly how it was going to go. And then I got sick on our 4th day and stayed that way. We still had fun, but I was SO depressed for months after because it wasn't all what I had hoped. Did I learn? NOPE! I still dream big! But your story is a lesson that sometimes things just aren't what we hope for, for whatever reason(s). In your case it sounds like it was was fog combined with a bit of mismanagement and lack of communication on the part of Disney, along with hopes for a nicer cabin.

Fort Wilderness is a place that I chose because my DH can easily overdo park and crowd time. When he's done, he's done. Until then, he's fine, but when he's had enough, he really wants to be in his own space, so I thought the cabin would be nice. (We love to rent them in the Smokey Mountains!) Like you, we've stayed at POR, and loved that, but only for four days. For a whole week, I thought it would be nice to have the extra space in the cabin. But everything at Disney is a tradeoff it seems and I constantly second guess! For the extra space of the cabin, we have a bus to a bus, as you so aptly called it! And, even with all the obsessive planning I do, I'm not sure I would have known about the boat not leaving until 8. I'm so glad the bus driver took you right there - that's Disney, swooping in to save the day when given the chance. (One time, after waking DD9 up on her birthday, and announcing that we were going to Disney, our plane was then stuck on a runway for five hours, and we had tickets that night to Mickey's Very Merry Xmas Party. We got to the MK gate at 11pm. One hour left of the party, and we'd missed the fireworks and the parade. The castmember at customer service let us in AND gave us tickets to the next party. And he also told me to stop crying because I was at Disney now and it was all going to be ok. I'll never forget that, not so much for the free ticket, but for what he said. He was my friend when he knew I needed one!)

I'm so sorry FW wasn't all it was cracked up to be for you. Thank you for bringing us back down to earth. I've heard the cabins are not as plush as a hotel room - they are simple, rustic, but comfortable, but that is not widely stated. Definitely NOT the chalets of the Smokies! lol

Also, I am on the fence with the golf cart, but according to you, I should definitely get it, so I thank you for helping with that decision.

Now, you can cross Fort Wilderness off your list (been THERE, done THAT, moving ON!) Hopefully, as time passes, and as you look at your photos, the good stuff will start to outweigh the bad (this is happening as I look at my pics from Europe.) And, it's so hard to beat POR - we love the rooms in the Alligator Bayou. I see nothing wrong in staying in the same place each time, where you know you'll feel at home! I'm hoping FW will be good for us, and still looking forward to it, but so glad you shared your story. I hope you'll go back to Disney soon for a "Bounce Back Trip"!

We love POR-alligator bayou as well. If it were just the two of us or we had older children, that's definitely where we'd stay. The cabins are definitely better experienced if you have your own car. Other than MK, we always relied on our own vehicle to get everywhere which I think makes a world of difference.

There are only two places to do the refillable mugs as others have pointed out. But you have a full size fridge and coffee maker so just bring or buy your own bulk beverages and have them at your disposal. Again, having your own car helps with this.

While we did not have a golf cart last time and relied on internal buses to get around the fort without too much problem, I can see how a cart would be nice. To me, a car to get around WDW is a must. This is not the place to fly into Orlando, take MDE from airport and then rely o disney transportation all the time

All the above is just my personal opinion of course. I am certain many Have different experiences.

:rotfl: Dreams do come true at Disney!!! ;) Either way, you'll have a great time.

So sorry you had a less than pleasurable experience at the Fort. When you're unhappy with a resort, that can definitely put a damper on a vacation.

I'm surprised the boats weren't running until 8:30 :confused3 They usually start running much earlier. Was it something going on besides the fog???

Usually they have a bus that runs to the parks for early ADRs and BBB. The information below is from Allears.net....

Buses for the Magic Kingdom and Magic Kingdom Resort Area will start running at 6:30am DAILY.

Buses for Animal Kingdom/Animal Kingdom Lodge will start running at 7:00-7:15am DAILY.

Buses for the Disney's Hollywood Studios (covering the Epcot Resort Area) will start running at 7:00-7:15am DAILY.

Buses for Epcot (Princess Breakfast at Norway) will start running at 7:00-7:15am DAILY.

This information is valid EVERY DAY, and for ALL DISNEY RESORTS serviced by Bus transportation.

These buses should not be used for general park access. Always let the driver know where you are going upon boarding the bus. Most times, the driver will be able to take you directly (ie: Contemporary, for Chef Mickey's) but sometimes this is not possible. You should always allow time for a connection when going Resort to Resort. Actual arrival times will vary by location.

The leaky roof is definitely an issue....especially since there was a puddle on the floor! Did you ask to be moved to another location? Hopefully your next trip will be a better experience. Maybe AoA will be available ::yes::

Thanks for sharing your honest reviews:thumbsup2

Definitely NOT the chalets of the Smokies!

:rotfl: Chalet????!!! Not sure why I thought that was so funny.

Also, I am on the fence with the golf cart, but according to you, I should definitely get it, so I thank you for helping with that decision.

So....what did you finally decide???? :teeth:

Love POR, too!! Great resort! It is so nice having that extra room in a cabin...especially with small children. And you're right....having your own vehicle does give you a little extra freedom.
