Disney's Avatar land cancelled?

LOL ! or a ride over Mt. Everst (no life at all on mountain except human) or a time machine trip to a pre-historic era or a roller coster based on a Coney Island classic or...

I agree it's the least ideal spot but like it or not it's the highest grossing series of Disney and well money talks. I think we all can agree on that. Besides the MK is 75% female themed. My boys much rather have a photo op with Tony Stark than Cinderella or Snow white or Belle or Aurora or Jasmine or....

I would have to strongly disagree with that. The only area with a strong feminine tone would be Fantasyland.

Agreed but rights are limited and if WDW really wants the rights I have a feeling they can make an offer that Universal can't refuse... I mean this is WDW we are talking about. They have just about unlimited funds.

No, they don't.

Now you're just making stuff up to suit your personal opinion. :sad2:

Someone mentioned it already, but getting the rights to build a land based on Lord of the Rings would be a huge win for whoever had the money to do it right. There is a classic book series with generational appeal (and international fan bases) with a hugely successful movie series as well. Creative and unique lands, characters, adventures....That could rival WWoHP!

Of course I am. What made you think any different? Some are in the Avatar-fanboy camp and some are in the Avatar is garbage camp. I am in a third camp :)

The reality will present itself when said new area is unveiled. Until then it's 110% speculation on everyones part.

I'm in that 3rd camp too believe it or not. I don't think Avatar was garbage. I thought it was a cinematically gorgeous and story-weak. I don't think it belongs at Disney at all and that Disney could do way better. As for the Avengers, I believe I mentioned it in this thread just before you chimed in. I don't know that we'll get a whole land, only because Disney will be accused of ripping Marvel Island from IoA, but I would like to see something happen with it.

I also like the idea of LoTR. A Middle Earth in Animal Kingdom? Yes please!

I think of it as "Pocahontas in the 24th-and-a-half Century."

:thumbsup2 And instead of gold they want unobtainium

OK, now I get it! :rotfl:

Avatar was a visually stunning boring movie. It was a novelty. I would be shocked if the sequel did nearly as well as the first one, if not be an outright flop. If Disney puts Avatarland in AK it will be the theme park version of Ishtar. Just my humble opinion.

:lmao:

Like many other PP, I do think Disney just needs to focus on expanding what they already have, Star Wars, Muppets. Star Wars might be difficult because I think I read somewhere that Disney and George Lucas have been unable to reach an agreement on a Star Wars expansion. But what about the Muppets at DHS? I know that doesn't help DAK, but DHS desperately needs some attention.

I would love it if LOTR came to Disney! I enjoyed the movies, but DH is a huge fan. If Middle Earth came to Disney, I would never have to sweet talk DH into another WDW trip again!

I've said it before and I'll say it again:

There was never any intention for an "Avatar" land...

It will be an "Avenger" land. The Marvel Avenger series (IM,IM2,CA,TH,AV) is one of the most succesful series Disney has ever produced. Early chatter is that the Avengers movie could make a run for the top grossing movie worldwide. There are 7 more scheduled (IM3,CA2,TH2,IH2,AV2,AV3,BW)with another 4 possibles after that (CA3,IH3,TH3,HE).

It would be a counter to the female gender based majority of the princess genre found elsewhere int he parks.

You watch Avenger is coming...

As the mother of two boys who are super-hero (particularly Marvel) fanatics, I would love to see this happen!

Although I'm still hoping for a Pixar Park. It's such an underutilized area in comparison to the princesses and it would have parents coming in droves! HS maximizes some of the Pixar appeal, but there is so much more they could do with it and still continue to grow.

I think I could make a cogent argument for the theming of Everest or even Dinosaur, but as for DinoLand USA itself? You got me there. ;)

Seriously though, I cannot think of two more incongruous theme park areas as Animal Kingdom and Marvel Superhero Island at Universal IoA.

Because nothing says animals and conservation quite like caped superheroes in tights.

It doesn't have to - which came first, Mickey Mouse's popularity globaly, or Disneyland?
Mickey Mouse's worldwide popularity preceded Disneyland by over two decades. I'm not saying Disney needs built-in recognizability at this point (see below), but in its early days Disneyland was anticipated because of the Disney name behind it.

I don't think Disney needs to try to capture lightning in a bottle with some hot, new property. They have 80 years of well-known franchises in their wheelhouse; some are being utilized better than others. Their efforts might be better served updating the anachronistic Future World with any number of already available properties. All that said, while I have no intrinsic desire to see Avatarland become a reality, I have no doubts that it could be great, not because it's Avatar, but because Disney makes world-class attractions. Many of Disney's most famous attractions didn't have a built-in userbase and they were still hugely successful, some even spawning their own film franchises. To some degree, the theme of the rides themselves are incidental and secondary to the concepts.

Speaking of unobtainium... that name is a prime example of why Disney shouldn't use Avatar. They have so many creative minds that could think of a name far better than 'unobtainium.' Seriously..wonder how long it took the writers to think of that one...:rolleyes1
Unobtainium may be a lackluster name, but it wasn't devised by the Avatar writers, it was a pre-existing term that is used in science and engineering to describe incredibly rare material.

Seriously? What do you call Tomorrowland, Adventureland, Frontierland and Liberty Square? Even the new Storybook Circus.

I give up.
