I was SUPER excited to learn that in December, Disney will be releasing their first "regular" cartoon movie since 2004. This film will feature, Princess Tiana, who lives in New Orleans during the age of Jazz! It was originally supposed to be called the FROG PRINCESS, but because of one reason or another, it's been changed to THE PRINCESS & THE FROG. I am happy that children of ALL colors are now able to see themselves as a princess, because only having ONE color of princess to look up to (2 including Jasmine, I suppose) is a little one-sided. Personally, not that it matters, but in case it is asked, I am "white." Apricot, actually. LOL! I love that the film is taking place in LOUISIANA!! My home state! Woo! However,

Here is my problem: I am HOPING that they do not over-use the Cajun-French influences. We don't need ANOTHER movie portraying Louisiana as ignorant, stereo-typed, and all about alligators and crawfish. Ugh, and God-forbid: Mardi Gras! LOL- We have wonderful history, of course, and it is nice that it is being tied in, and if anyone can make it into magic, I know Disney can. From what I have read, Princess Tiana's friends WILL include an alligator, and someone she confides in will be Mama Odie. I was disappointed in the 30 second trailor, though. The lightning bug seems to be missing teeth and is a very over-done version of a southern stereo-type, and his "Cajun" accent is an embarrassment. After many horrible things have come out of Louisiana in the past few years, I was hoping this would shine some bright light onto a culture that was built from greatness, not dim, southern-trash. Has anyone heard if there was going to have voo-doo or witchcraft involved?

& Has anyone ever been disappointed in the way something was portrayed or represented in a Disney movie?

*Note, I am not complaining about race, or New Orleans. Just listing some hopes for the movie. Friendliness, please! A few quotes are listed on IMDB.com, if anyone wanted to read more! Trailor: http://disney.go.com/disneypictures/princessandthefrog/

The trailer for that movie put a smile on my face. I can't wait for it to come out. My children are half asian, so it's good to see Disney including princesses of all races. Thanks for the info.

I can't wait for that movie! It is wonderful they are making this. I did hear it will be the last digital animated movie like that... which I hope is not true because those are my favorite movies. Does anyone know if that's true?

I think the trailer looks cute. I admit, I am from the northeast, so what I know about LA comes from movies, TV and books Like Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood. Love that movie. I also loved True Blood on HBO.

I'm "cautiously optimistic" about this movie. I'd like to get excited about it, but then I remember the last hand drawn feature they put out, "Home on the Range," and for some strange reason I can't stand to get my hopes up. If I'd seen that movie more than once, I'd probably still be having nightmares about it. :crazy2:

You're forgetting Mulan (not exactly a princess, but still), and Pocahontas. Although don't get me started on how inaccurate the latter movie was, but nevertheless. Hopefully they will also make a major female character be of Hispanic heritage soon, as well.

Yes, there will be. After all, the prince has to be turned into a frog somehow, right? ;)

The villain of the movie is a palmreader and Voodoo practitioner. Mama Odie is a Voodoo priestess, and is sort of the fairy godmother of the movie. :)

I can't wait for this movie - But you likely already know by looking at my signature. :thumbsup2

I am soososo pumped for this movie and THIS princess. While I loved all of the princesses, growing up it was a bit sad not to have a princess that represented me. Though Pocahontas was great it still wasn't enough. I really hope that Princess Tiana will have her place itn the parks and throughout the resorts. I'm glad that once i have a daughter, she will have a princess of her own too.

Good move Disney! First AA princess to coincide with the First AA President who happens to have two beautiful daughters himself.

You know, I'm all about making things all nice and cute for kids- (this is a cartoon) but we are talking about kids here. I couldn't imagine a story taking place in New Orleans and not include alligators, gumbo, swamps and yes even voo doo. When I first heard where the story would take place I already had the villain in my head. Yes, some kind of voo doo witch type. It's fitting, it is New Orleans. I feel you on the toothless dragon fly (do dragon flies have teeth:confused3 ), but we are talking 1920's New Orleans. Now, again, keeping all thing 'real' in that time is not necessary, but I can see and even appreciate (on most things) where Disney is going here. If you’ve ever taken a tour around Port Orleans resort you can get a clear picture of Disney’s vision of New Orleans. Even their pools are surrounding about instrument playing alligators. I wasn't too pleased find out that Tiana's prince was not black - but I can appreciate the day we are in today (in regards to interracial relationships). I read on another site that Disney will release this film Thanksgiving instead of Christmas Day. Apparently, Alvin and the Chipmunks, and some other kid movie will premiere around Christmas too, so Disney will release this one a little early.

Well. . .as another denizen of Louisiana, I can say that it will likely look like every other stereotype of NOLA. Ah well. It is what it is.

I suspect I will feel about it the same way I do about Pocahantas when all is said and done. I'm very glad they made a movie with an American Indian Princess, but I'm not really thrilled with the movie they made.

Does it count that I'll keep my fingers crossed and honestly hope for the best?

At least ya' know where I'm coming from.. by the way, the tag fairy got a good one on you. LOL! & Ultimately, I really am excited about the film. I didn't know about the inter-racial relationship, but we'll see how it works out.. *Disney Magic*

Well, The Little Mermaid was inter-racial. (Mermaid and White European.) Pocohantas was inter-racial. (And in RL a v.v. tragic story.) Frog Princess just steps on our taboos a little more than those movies.

But as a friend of an older generation who does geneaology observed. "Everybody's multi-racial. There's just some as don't admit to it and some as do." ;)

I love the music to Pocahontas but I can't get past the fact that they made a big deal about this being their first animated feature about a real person and yet they totally altered the facts of her life.....yuck!

You forgot that Pocahontas is a princess too. And Mulan was a great role movie and so was Lilo and Stitch.

My thread might be taken out of context. I am saying I AM excited and thrilled about having an African American PRINCESS. I understand Mulan & Pocahontus were of different nationalities, but this is the first actual princess that an African American child can see! :goodvibes Also, I am in favor of the inter racial couple- I didn't know if I made that clear.. I didn't want to come off as if I was not in favor of it! This might be off topic, but has anyone heard anything about Rapunzel?

Do they actually call her a princess in the movie? Or is she a princess in the sense that Lilo is a princess?

B/c in RL the daughter of a chief is NOT a princess and was not in Pocahontas's time. She was just the daughter of the chief. The Obama girls and the Bush twins aren't princesses, are they? Same would've held true for Pocahontas.

Thank you for clarifying that! :goodvibes :flower3: I think I misunderstood you.

One Louisiana girl to another, my apologies for misunderstanding!:flower3:
